Blocking in Elite Dangerous

I wouldn’t bring an SUV (Asp) against an F1 car(FDL) and expect to win— it makes sense that a ship built purely for combat will outperform one that isn’t, just as a purpose-built race car should easily defeat a car designed for commuting.

Now if I was getting groceries, the SUV(Asp)would be much more practical than the F1(FDL),of course.

While driving my SUV(Asp) to the store, I would certainly fasten my seatbelt(Shield generator), periodically check my mirrors(Sensors), and be prepared to react to other people on the road. If I get into an accident, the airbags(Shield boosters, armor) should improve my chance of survival.

To be competitive in PvP, you generally need the best possible gear, and the skills to apply it effectively.

To simply escape danger, you need only a basic understanding of the techniques involved. Low-level engineering certainly makes it easier, but isn’t always required.

The sacrifices necessary to make a non-combat ship more ‘open worthy’ are relatively minor when compared to a min/maxed PVP machine. As wicked as a PvP spec ship can be, they suck for literally everything else besides combat lol.

Kinda how an F1 car would suck for getting groceries...
You are basically right, but I think the disparity between a dedicated combat ship and everything else is so immense, that you don't even need to consider fighting back, if you are not in a dedicated combat ship. You might consider running, but that is it. Back when the gap between ships was not that big, it was more fun. But then SCBs and HRPs happened...and Engineers.

SPEAKING OF BLOCKING.....

On PS4 I had a switch that turned off my location on the Galaxy Map / Friends list. I do not see this on PC, so I've purged my friends list of all but the most truest of friends, since I usually prefer not having a GPS tracker tied to my ship. Am I just not seeing this switch because it's moved (or removed), or has there never been such an option on PC?

The problem in ED is that a properly outfitted and engineered SUV will eat stock F1 cars for lunch.

Why is everyone so concerned about fighting back in a non-combat vessel? Your goal should be to complete the task at hand— deliver your cargo, finish your mission, etc.

It’s like a cargo plane taking on a fighter jet, except the cargo planes in Elite can simply hyperspace away from danger in 30 seconds or less.

Even prior to engineers, anyone who loaded up with armor and shielding was going to have an advantage against someone who was built for other activities.

I’ll agree that there’s a much larger gap these days, (hitpoint inflation has gotten a little out of hand, to the point where it’s a concern even in parts of the PvP community.) but survival is still very possible without extensive modding of a ship, there’s just less margin for error.

Please fasten your seatbelts

I've convinced myself - 'm definitely using the block feature from now on, because this is the way the galaxy has been subverted by tedious individuals.

I've finally come round full-circle. Mobius is surprisingly empty, and this week has been very enlightening with a combat CG and trade CG running simultaneously. It dawns on me that there is a certain type of player that I doubt I'll ever be interested in engaging with in this game, regardless of setting. I know what to look for now and will be adjusting my block list accordingly, which should allow me to play in Open and even engage in meaningful PvP when the occasion arises (which unfortunately isn't that often) while avoiding certain "undesirables" who bring nothing to my game play. I won't go into any more detail than that, no need to stir up controversy.

ps - blocking actually works, now that I've modified my expectations.

It certainly is faster than a Mamba in a combat loadout lol. You can be totally armored and still be well over 600.

The max is about 642, and I think I managed to get mine to stay around 630 with shields, armor(Around 3700!), and weapons.

The little Dolphin is great in that regard, too. Still quick when armored down.

Got to say, was pretty tempted earlier (we witnessed the same "conversation" at the CG system I believe) to block a handful of people. Similarly the night before, although it was a different crowd (1 individual in particular thought he was being funny but he was just downright creepy).

The fact that they keep using system chat also means you can't even hide into Solo either. I even considered using the report button (didn't feel the need before... maybe I was lucky?) but then remembered the potential consequences, so didn't bother in the end.

What sort of conversation? If you feel it crosses the line, report them. There is a category for that after all.

Creepy/inappropriate/abusive chat is the one appropriate use of the block function as far as I'm concerned.

The whole blocking "feature" sounds a bit like a griefers idea. A feature that allows you to disrupt others instancing without the possibility of being noticed? It would be very simple to disrupt communal exploration or racing events by joining them and blocking half the participants. The icing on the cake is the fact that system chat even allows that griefer to watch as half the players can't connect to each other. This, done with two or more griefers with partly overlapping block lists, should force such an event into a lockdown of sparsely populated instances. And it can even be done in PG as there is no way to show if someone is blocking you or if the instancing is just bad.
Just to make that clear, I'm not interested in doing so, but it seems incredibly easy to abuse and is able to disrupt not only PvP, but nearly every group event.

Each to his/her own. I've always been more bothered by what people do than what they say.
I'm pretty sure these two were connected in this case.

Ironically one of the big topics in system chat last night was about how certain "griefers" use block to keep the "good guys" from instancing with them.

I'm almost at the point of "Block them all and let God sort them out." Especially anyone flying an FDL.. Such an unimaginative ship :p

Don't worry, I'm not there yet! Thankfully, after further testing, my OPI actually does work. By adding a few of the more aggressive, "for the lulz" players to the list, I'm spared from ganker alley at the CGs. The only downside is no more taunting these folks with my shieldless Hauler, but the novelty of that has worn off anyway.

If an event is happening in an actual private group (most are IIRC), then this will be less likely. The good news is that once detected, the very tool used to disrupt could be turned against the guy doing the disrupting - everybody just block him and instancing returns to normal.

How would you even detect that? It's absurdly easy to abide every rule while still disrupting the event, without anyone capable of knowing this.

Why not have a block for chat, and a separate block for the rest? You could set it for 'none', 'words only' or 'everything'.
I'm not opposed to this, but my personal default would be full block - I don't want to fly with creepers.

Now if I could block NPCs in chat, that would be wonderful!

The thing is- abusive chat is abuse, because it describes situations and uses offensive language.

Outside of that, what else can they do other than blow you up?

Another rule might be that if someone kills you, the game shuffles instances (outside Powerplay (which should be full fat)) so if someone pops you, you are separated without the need for blocking outright.
