Blocking in Elite Dangerous

I'm pretty sure these two were connected in this case.

Ironically one of the big topics in system chat last night was about how certain "griefers" use block to keep the "good guys" from instancing with them.

I'm almost at the point of "Block them all and let God sort them out." Especially anyone flying an FDL.. Such an unimaginative ship :p

Don't worry, I'm not there yet! Thankfully, after further testing, my OPI actually does work. By adding a few of the more aggressive, "for the lulz" players to the list, I'm spared from ganker alley at the CGs. The only downside is no more taunting these folks with my shieldless Hauler, but the novelty of that has worn off anyway.

I've been blocked by griefers just for flying speed builds.

People pull the griefers out of SC then whiz off faster than missiles can travel and repeat. I don't do that, but I do dance around beyond weapon range and occasionally tickle them with phasing sequence if they interdict me. Its like a snowspeeder against ATAT's loads of fun.

The thing is- abusive chat is abuse, because it describes situations and uses offensive language.

Outside of that, what else can they do other than blow you up?
Words are easy to ignore, but the freak clowns that just blew me with no words and no reason cost me 1/5 of my current credit balance. So yes, I blocked them, and I'll block any and all freak clowns from now on who are loitering at humanitarian trade and rescue systems, engineer bases, etc. The game is way better without them IMO.

Full circle...

But any freak clowns I encounter in an Anarchy system, they'll get a free pass, regardless what they do to me.

Why not have a block for chat, and a separate block for the rest? You could set it for 'none', 'words only' or 'everything'.

Sounds overcomplicated, you could have it default to all with the option to do one or the other in a submenu I suppose. Don't really see the point myself if someone was block bait for either I'd not be bothered by missing the other.

But it does block the part that causes most offense, at least IMO. If that was with instance shuffling after destruction you'd be separated. Plus, option screens would make more choice easy to put in.

Personally I wouldn't want someone being a Richard in chat in game, and I wouldn't want someone being a Richard in game in chat.

I'm all for player choice though.

I'm very much liking this approach. Not entirely without it's flaws, but I like it.

Reason being that I've mentioned MANY times in the past about silly players turning the galaxy upside down - what I mean by this is that a "High Security" system - if it is being trafficked by human players - is often the least secure in the galaxy, while "Anarchy" are amongst the safest places to fly. This is topsy turvy. It isn't right. It isn't sensible. And it's a deliberate subversion of the intended game environment, by silly individuals with no skill and no imagination. ( * I'll get a comment about this, I'm sure - but be ready to discuss fully if there is.)

So what I see you doing Old Duck, and the reason I like it as an 80% solution (to the problem of a subverted immersion breaking subversion by silly players) toward restoring the galaxy to its intended state.

Let us consider for one moment every single able bodied pilot, who owned a ship, in a system that is under threat of famine and starvation. They hear about humanitarian aid being delivered, but then also hear about "blockades" - so it's a case of allowing your family to starve, or getting in your ship and dominating the SC environment with sheer numbers. The defence force of the system would be out in SC and hammering on any WANTED they encountered, and also hammering on any single interdiction of a lawful vessel that they witnessed.
That would be how any blockade would really be addressed.

And in performing blocks on silly players, you get to restore some sense and rid your own game environment of silliness.

What sort of conversation? If you feel it crosses the line, report them. There is a category for that after all.
Last night was mostly smack talk with a fair bit of swearing (I don't mind it in small doses and if tongue in cheek) and homophobic slurs, taunting and personal attacks. It wasn't aimed at me personally but I just found it incredibly childish considering most of the players concerned are likely middle aged guys and not teens suffering through puberty.

The creepy one was just really unpleasant it felt like I was in a BDSM chat room of sorts. Next time I see him I'll probably just block him outright.

I realise I have my profanity filter off but that stuff wouldnt have been picked up by it anyways the way it was worded.

I'm not getting sleepless nights over it but it's very distracting as it's in your FOV, it ruins immersion and drowns out sensible comments from normal players.

Why I didn't report him? Because nothing will happen.

ED could definitely do with a mute function, not just for sound but for text also. I dare not think what I would have to listen to if I had player voice comms on by default.

You you aren't doing any of these I will block you. It's extremely offensive if you don't call me a honky or other bad name/term 24/7

One of the funniest things about distant ganks (2 I think) was the gankers uploading their score sheet of ganks made by pilots, which was then used as a mass blocklist.

Something of an own goal in a game with a now searchable block function.
It was funny. One of them tried to report the use of an "exploit".

That's fairly low key.

I've been accused of breaking the law by people I've blocked. Apparently its both a breach of copyright law and harassment to decide not to play video games with someone. One actually accused me of incitement to commit harassment by talking about block in the forum.

Crazy talk. Funny though.

Technically it could be harassment or maybe griefing to pick on or block somebody because of their demographic. So if they wish to define themselves as a demographic made up of idiotic immersion-breaking people they could have a point....but its their actions that lead to blocking not the colour of their hair so its still an individual block. So I personally think griefing/harassment label would not apply as it would be found that they are using the defined legal defence of 'Throwing their toys out of the pram' which may still work in their personal lives with the individuals around them but not in wider life or law.

Lol yep. You could also turn that on its head and say trying to deliberately spoil the video game for someone else is harassment. It would be equally pathetic and unrealistic though, and get you laughed at anywhere outside of a video gaming forum.

Block and forget about them would be the most likely official advice for anyone claiming to be a victim of a video gaming crime that was anything less than serious sounding repeated threats and or genuine out of game online harassment.

Which is probably why things like the block function exist.

I'm finding new gameplay in blocking, in that I now scout ahead in a fast, cheap ship and observe the system I wish to trade in for potential gank squads, blocking any obvious terrorists before bringing in my T9. Anybody who looks like a clown, I'm blocking! I've also been taking note of Squadron IDs. Is there a place I can look these up online to see the "mission statement" of these Squadrons? I know some are dedicated to ganking, but I can't easily verify this in-game.

I don't block legitimate pirates or BGS PvPers (or Anarchy role-players), only the "lulz" and "tears of carebears" crowd - the type of people who think Distant Ganks was a noble cause.

This surgical blocking not only makes the game more immersive, but it also cleans up the chat! And unlike Mobius or Solo, there is still risk because there is always a chance a killer clown will slip through my net and get me anyway, as happened yesterday in my fully-loaded T9 - OUCH!

And I'd ask you, if this was in Open in Powerplay, would you block other rival pledges?

If yes, what you describe here in a Powerplay context is exploiting the block function.
