Bored in Space: 5K LY to unlock Palin

A Galaxy full of procedurally generated sameness. Whoopie. A huge Galaxy to explore looks good on paper and makes for great talking points for the fan boys, but it sucks for actual game play imo.

Well yes, for the most part but the important difference (for me at least) is that it's our own galaxy, not a complete fantasy ;)

I think I've done about 50 jumps and I'm nearly halfway to the 5K light years I need to unlock Palin. I somehow managed the 50 jumps by watching YouTube videos while playing. I'm not sure I can motivate myself to finish this trip.

How do you deep space explorers manage the tedious repetition of jump after jump?

Has anyone ever suggested to FDev that we should arrive a bit farther away from the star so that it doesn't obstruct our next jump? Jump, go around star, jump. Jump, go around star jump. Fuel scoop for 10 minutes.

Asp X 50 ly jump range with Guardian FSD booster.

If FDev took out this time sink known as grind-jumping, there'd be nothing else to offer you or keep you in your seat to reach said destination.
So many things in this game are just grinds.

When I say grind, I don't mean just doing something repetitious. I actually mean doing something INANE and repetitious.
Core mining is repetitious but not inane, because despite having to do it over and over again, you actually have to vary the way you blast those fragments out of the rocks to get at what you want.
Laser mining IS stupidly repetitious, because all you do is point your dumbass at the rock and fire away until something pops out.

Ditto jumping to a far off star. It's all...
J J J J J J J J J.... occasionally you fly slow in SC to refuel... then it's back to J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J

Let's face it, that's the universe they created. Instead of allowing us to cruise through interstellar space, they've decided that making you hit that J-key into submission or oblivion will keep you coming back for more. Because you need to reach that final destination.

I've done a 6k trip in a 20Ly T6.
Best you can do is watch a movie or 3 on a 2nd screen and turn off the sound to Elite. Enjoy the movie(s).

Too bad the stupid game doesn't have some kinda autopilot.

If they're gonna give us this grind, at least give us an option to bypass it by letting automation take over.

It's the 34th century. Jesus Christ. And there's no autopilot in sight.

I think everyone's definition of exploration seems to differ.
If I want to travel across the USA by car, from NY to LA. It will take alot longer then taking a flight. Now, are you deemed more so a explorer because you took the longer route and saw more? Or is the person who flew in a plane a explorer as well, it's just they wanted to get there faster?
Some people believe getting to location B from location A is exploration, regardless of how. While others believe the experience of a journey to a specific place is exploration.
Palin only requires the plane.

There is nothing in his quest that includes exploration. Watching YT while completing it is evidence of that. All the wishcasting narrative in the world does not alter that fact.

A true explorer would have 4 more J's.

It would only force you to do it if whatever is locked behind the grind wall, as you put it, is an essential in the game rather than just desirable.

I broke my Palin unlock trip up by exploring along the way and looking at the stars and nebulae, interest was added to the return trip by having to navigate around the blocked systems out there, but the big thing was to not force myself to a timescale to complete the trip.
Nothing is essential in the game.

For long trips with no stops inbetween you go maximum range and biggest fuel scoop available. You won't need to stop ever for fueling up...
I'd make stops though and try to enjoy the trip instead of just jumping, because why not?

As someone who regularly travels between Colonia and the bubble (4 times this year alone, and a trip to Beagle last december),
I somewhat agree. The plain "go 5000 LY to any direction away from me and come back without any data from this" is stupid.
It gets you out of your comfort zone, for sure, but the first time I did this I nearly quit the game. You get used to it, and Neutron boosting is a technique well
worth to be gitting gud in. Nowadays I can neutron boost without really paying notice, and I never died or entered the exclusion zone ever.
Still, it is a bit nonsensical. Some good suggestions in this thread how it could be made better.

OP: I'd strongly suggest you ride it out. I hope you got your scanners along so you can tag some first discoveries on the way, the first ELW I discovered for myself
made me smile and giggle a lot. After those 2x5000 LY you'll never have to explore again, but for this trip, just do it (y)

A Galaxy full of procedurally generated sameness. Whoopie. A huge Galaxy to explore looks good on paper and makes for great talking points for the fan boys, but it sucks for actual game play imo.
Wait for a far future when dozens of different planets (including atmosphere ones) will take place with their differents/biomes/gameplay ;)

If you want to get 5K Ly over with quickly, why not use the Neutron Star planner and jump via neutron stars. Supercharge your FSD with neutron stars and you can increase your jump distance up to 4 times. 5K Ly is not far at all really.

Even from empty it doesn't take me more than a minute to fill my Phantom up, either your fuel scoop it to small or you fuel tank is to large, enough for 3 full range jumps is plenty and fuel scoop every star you can.

Exploration 101:
Fuel Scoop one size bigger then FSD, and never less then B-rated (for cheapos like me) or outright A-rate.

Unless you are exaggerating for th eeffect I spotted few issues:

I somehow managed the 50 jumps by watching YouTube videos while playing. I'm not sure I can motivate myself to finish this trip.
Since I switched to dual screen setup I found long range exploring doing itself on it's own. Focus split between ED and YT does wonders. Ofc - I agree it's weird approach.

Proper mental preparations, simple. If you treat it as "oh man, i HAVE to do 5k LYs (5k!) for the unlock" it will be a PITA. If you treat it as an adventure, an occasion to see the piece of the galaxy, feel the emptiness - you may actually enjoy it.

Fuel scoop for 10 minutes.
Mistakes were made when outfitting for the job. 10 minutes means small and inefficient fuel scoop. It's not a bubble when you just need FS for emergency. While exploring FS is mandatory equipment. Biggest A-rated is a must. My last journey (Clipper) I was scooping all fuel I neede while just passing the star and aligning with next jump.

Also - lack of experience with chain scooping. At first I was jumping as far as I could, going empty tank, then scoop for several minutes. Then I learned to pas-scoop: jump (fuel spent) - pass the star while scooping (fuel refilled) - jump... This way there is no need to make fuel stops.

Ugh, mine pre-Guardian 33 LYs ASP and Sag journey. BTW, I made 5k LYs requirement unlock back then, not even knowing about it. One moment I'm in the middle of nowhere, next I get messsage.

Generally speaking - looks like you have prepared poorly for the task and treat it as a tedious task that needs to be done - hence your problems.

If the task wasn't made so lazily and there was actually some content there I would be all for it. It's just a hurdle to jump that someone just blurted out most likely in a meeting, "have them jump 5000 light-years".

Of course you can use the same argument against everything, combat rank of expert to unlock Olmanova, 50 combat bonds for Uri Asamaak, mine 500 tons of ore for Selene Jean? It's all a joke right, just give us access and forgot all this locking rubbish.

Ok now I don't really think that, but it's the end result of continually arguing for easier access, there's always someone who will find it to much and demand it be made easier. The OP has 50ly jump range, he's going 5kly, that around 100 jumps, and he doesn't even have to fly back, he can just suicide out there and reappear instantly in the bubble. If I was doing it I would have made it 5kly there and back to demonstrate your skill as an explorer.

Hehe, 17ly Python here, I flew that thing all the way to Colonia, it's still there, I purchased a 17ly Cobra 3 to fly back

I'm confused about how people seem to be going about this... Don't you just get a few jumps away and then in every system scan everything? Why do people seem to just jump again and again?

Sure keeps me busy and it's a great part of the game. Where's the zen in just jumping?
