Incidentally the right angled ellipse optical illusion infuriates me when I encounter it in solidworks models I'm making for stuff I'm prototyping.
Speaking as someone who has never played with "Orbital Lines" turned on due to how it destroys any sense of realism, I have no idea what the OP is ranting on about. :S
Are they saying that they are incapable of making a proper approach to a planet or station unless they have this "Training Wheel" feature turned on? And now for some reason, the Training Wheels have partially come off the ship?
My advice would be to turn that garbage off and use common sense instead.

But are those orbit lines just an approximation for display in the HUD ? - In which case that could be accurately simulating the software for the HUD of the ship.

Unplayable for the planetoid. Imagine you're a happy little planetoid toddling along your orbit, as you say. And suddenly you have to take a sharp right angled turn. If I were the plantoid, I'd flee immediately to Star Citizen, where planetoids are treated better. Allegedly!
