broken update already :(

that's a lot of assumptions you call facts, but it's kinda fascinating. tell me more about my broken windows!

add:
specially the part about a few dozen other games, several development environments and a lot of funky hardware devices, all of which tend to update flawlessly and very seldom,
if at all, require a reinstall. can't wait for your prose!
Well error you got WAS a Windows error, nothing Fdev could do and correct. Proper address for complaints is at Microsoft.

Btw. I really hate MS permissions model. I had same like problems with various software, I'm only user of this machine and have adminstrator rights. Now if my Linux installition complains, welll, sudo su and then I have rights of god in system. With Windows system always has more rights than me and processes I run.

it was not my case (see initial pages), but funny how an elite reinstall fixed a windows error, windows being completely oblivious of elite's existence.

sorry, but do you even read/think before you post? i know, that was snarky. but, really, dudes ...

there was a bug (in frontier's software)
i offered an explanation and a workaround
my predictions turned out to be true (reinstall fixes it)
i didn't mention any frontier employee nor any relative in any inapropriate way
nothing more. just facts, those things seems so fond of 😉
oh, and i also made a snarky joke about frontier (sorry, couldn't resist)

seems that last bit just unleashed anger and wrath. well, be my guest, but you guys could aswell get over it already.

it's not a permission problem. it's an uninstantiable object. permissions could be the indirect cause, it could have many other causes.

So you are even more likely to have malformed libraries. Maybe you have libs held back as dependencies for the funky drivers all coded by the lowest bidder. This is the reason you should keep your development machine separate from your gaming machine. Maybe you can learn to troubleshoot which lib is causing your problem, because likely your problem is that one of the function calls that Elite expects to work a certain way (y'know like literally everyone else has on their standard Windows installs) is behaving differently because of whatever malformed libraries you have loaded up on your box.

i appreciate your interest, although it doesn't really help much, tbh. op is sorted and i have no problem :) not with any other software or driver at this point. my elite launcher just bugged out, but still works and i won't even bother to reinstall it.

fun fact: my division 2 install failed comically self-updating. i was already miffed at that overblown uplay thing, just had enough and uninstalled it for good, along with a few games i actually liked. good riddance. my elite dangerous launcher however i will keep around for a while, warts and all 😉

Another new game failing to update is further evidence supporting my suspicion.

sorry but that's highly speculative.

in the case of elite it is obviously the developers 'fault'. they are responsible for the libraries they use and install on my behalf. .net is convenient, but it can have versioning complications, deal with them in your install or don't use it in your projects, you can't simply shove that on the user who doesn't even have to know what you install.

in the case of uplay, no idea. it could have perfectly been their launcher's problem. my fault? who knows. anyway i didn't bother to find out because i decided to not use that software anymore anyway.

and i just want to make clear that this is just for the sake of discussion, otherwise it isn't an issue at all.

Kids these days, eh? Probably don't know what product FORC-FDEV-D-1000 signified, either.

I will not give the whole thing away, but here's a hint: Alpha .

Edit Just read the other post with the answer. Oh well . . .
( Of course, even though I haven't quite grown up yet, if ever; I am far from being a kid)

Like I said, lots don't know. Sure they sometimes noticed, they still do. But the"correct" way had always been to your "report" on your OP and ask them. That way they get a notification. But don't worry about it - people enjoy hanging out in dead threads :)

Access denied is Windows problem. And it means that writing or reading from certain location is forbidden by OS. Probably there was some kind of problem with Elite patch and your particular Windows installation. Windows'es tend to develop some quirks over time. And that makes testing against them nearly impossible.

I did not had any problems with installing current patch.

of course, magic! 😂

me neither. the launcher is just buggy.

a recent build of Windows 10 started locking files to read only in a LOT of areas, to (their logic, not defending it) prevent ransomware trojans. ticked me off, to be honest, as we move more and more to "So secure ONLY a hacker can use the system". A dream of mine is that some day linux will get a contender that competes with DirectX so developers can develop for that and I can ditch windows altogether. I'm not ABM (anything but microsoft), hell I worked for them for 5 years, but I do get tired of being told what I can and can't do on a several thousand dollar machine I own.

Yeah well, most of us have jobs so there are unavoidable delays, and also it is actually impossible to read EVERy post made on the forums. As has been mentioned the best way to get our attention is to report your OP with a request to close the thread.

Which I will do for you now, now that I have finished cooking and eating my after work evening meal :D
