Community Event / Creation Buckyball Racing Club presents: The Kessel Run (31.10 - 15.11)

Diddy KongBuckyball racing! Alot is back! 01:24:14 is going to take some beating.

Taking into account the delays caused by interdictions, bad landings caused by my co-pilot blocking view of the landing pad and waiting for the ship to not be on fire, as well as the extra jump range from using a better ship, I reckon I can cut my time by fourteen minutes in the unlimited class. That would make it close.

To the shipyard!

CMDR Alec Turner was able to shave 5 minutes and change off his previous time. Unfortunately not enough the keep his former 1st place among Cobra pilots. He might have to install those buckets of water permanently in his cockpit.

Oh well, I'll just have to listen to some music while I'm catching these guys up.

In Alot's case I will have time to listen to this (with seconds to spare) ...

And in Tuna Mage's case I'll (just) be able to listen to this ...

Speaking of which... I have been home from my little exploration jaunt for a few days now, but it didn't feel right posting until I had something to show for it. Well... I'm back! :D

I knew it! I knew it! I knew it would be the same like in BBR6 and BBR7. Well, let's melt that tin can even more.

Welp, there appears to be a sentient biscuit-based lifeform right up my tailpipe! :p
Cookiebots! Get that Ship ready! And remove all grains of paint that are still on it!
:D

Thanks for the update Stern, well I think your slipping Alot, you're 2 minutes off my predicted time for you of 82 mins. ;)
and good job furrycat in proving theres still plenty of time to be taken off the regulation cobra run. ill be back.

Dear Cmdr

"Dear Cmd Alot. It has come to our attention, that during your recent travel into the black, you forgot 1 canister of Geawen Dance Dust at Beagle Point. Please return immediately to claim it. Unfortunately, you'll not have time to participate in the Kessel Run, which we deepl.."
"psst!"
"Yes?"
"Look at the leaderboard"
"One moment...Noooooooo"

Congratulations on a great time, Cmdr :)

The cheek of the man! :p
... although now you mention it, there were a few first-run mistakes in there (including accidentally entering the slow-as-toffee Dao Jungu system map whilst turning around); I suppose I might be able to shave a minute or two if I really try... ;)

I think Stern's inadvertently done a good job at trying to get rid of my usual favourite tricks though - with one or two notable exceptions, planetary braking is awful for this race; I think I probably lost more time by trying to do it than I gained!

Now that's the spirit. Anyway, my time is definitely beatable; I mean, Kliggson says so! :D

Oh dear, I'll have to go ba-waaaaait a minute...
I'm sure Arrakaij will be happy to collect it on my behalf. ;)

After simultaneously watching my videos of yesterday's and today's attempts (the last one was 2 interdictions slower than the previous) I totally look forward to the after-race-discussions.
I've never really analyzed my runs and today "discovered" how many variables there are in this race. I'm now even less sure about my loadout...
82mins sounds pretty accurate for a perfect run. But perfect implies good landings, so count me out on that :D

Incidentally, does anyone else think fuel scoops ought to have weight. I like the idea that there could be a trade off where, for racing, you might be better off with a smaller scoop to give you greater range at the cost of maybe not being able to scoop quite fast enough to keep up with your consumption. As it stands there's no trade off (apart from money), which seems a shame.

I'll also be curious to learn what fuel capacity people are going with on their Open Cobras. I've currently gone 12t but I reckon I can squeeze through my currnent route on 10 if I'm careful. Oh, and also also ... do people deliberately dock with just a half-full tank so that their ship is lighter for the next route plan (could save a jump here and there surely, although you run the risk of not being able to make a mid-route jump if you over fill at the wrong stage)

Crikey, cookiehole appears to have inadvertantly opened a floodgate of race musings here. I'll stop now before I start to ramble.

Alec, you are quite right, there are a number of different loadout, landing and jump strategies! I have to attribute my current cobra first place (Which I fear is very temporary ), to some careful calculations on jump vectors vs loadout, fuel scooping times, refuelling sequences, etc.

In the spirit of fair play, I'll share my calcs below, but only look at them if you feel you need to, you probably have a better strategy in place anyhow :p

The Grid Engine has just finished a run without exploding, although it did get the heat up to 316% and the hull down to 19% at one point

Errr, wow. That is taking aggressive fuel scooping to a whole new level. I seem to recall being slightly amazed (and worried!) by somebody getting to to 241% in BBR6, and that was on the old heat scale. 300% on the new scale is, well, let's just say I'm amazed the pilots' federation will still give you insurance...

Just don't let the cookiebots get anywhere near the leaderboard. You remember what happened last time they did - dots everywhere!

Sorry, having some difficulty finding a 3-hour timeframe within which to execute this run.
Yeah, I'm still unsure about signing up for the Sidewinder class for this very reason :p

Well, er, about that... [sub]sorry[/sub]

If it's any consolation, it wasn't entirely due to just me being speedy... I did a bit of humming and aah-ing, and noticed a way to shave a bit of time.
Here's a hint... :D

Some more fresh meat for the grinder, please make a bit of room in the ladder for me too!

I heard about the race, and I'm here for the prize and glory...naah who am I kidding? I'm just a rookie pretending to have a reason for crashing in the docking pads as hard as can be possibly done :)

My entry:
CMDR Aken B.
AkenBosch
Regulation Cobra
Ship name: Sorry Excuse

I already did a run...well, thanks to a couple borked landings, the map failing to set a path once, and several jumps that left me in witch space far longer than needed, it came up to be a sorry excuse for a run, just to be coherent ...I'll send proof as soon as I can ;)

Welcome, CMDR! We all started somewhere, and I'm quite sure you'll find your feet! Lots of good competition in the Cobra class, looking forward to seeing your efforts :)

Better scoops need more power. If you are fitting an A6 scoop to your Asp you are probably moving up a powerplant class, and that does mean extra mass. Additionally you may choose to fit an extra fuel tank to give you the range to reach the next waypoint rather than sit around scooping. For longer races like this one you admittedly will be wanting a scoop anyway. For the shorter races, however, it's a valid consideration.

I can see the point and I would indeed always advocate having a fuel scoop. I don't necessarily think that it's completely unbalanced, though.

do people deliberately dock with just a half-full tank so that their ship is lighter for the next route plan
I did that in the Outpost Dash with my Courier. I had it written down that I needed to scoop to a particular bar fullness before jumping so that I'd arrive with exactly enough fuel to plot the next system in one jump.

The margin for error was pretty small and it got painful to manage under race conditions. That's one of the reasons I don't like the Hauler; the other being that it looks, sounds and handles like the in spaaaace version of the type of joyless cheap car that people who think that cars are for getting from A to B would buy. If you have exactly no fuel, as demonstrated in Alot's screenshot above, you can jump Far. If you have any fuel at all, you cannot.

Picking Up The Pace - Adding To The Pot

I have previously pledged 20t of Sothis Crystalline Gold to the winner of the Open Unlimited categoy. This will no longer do.
To pick up the pace of new potential entries before the weekend, and to celebrate my first mining expedition to HIP 43296 for the Kaushposs CG, I'll increase my previous pledge of 20t of Sothis Crystalline Gold to the winner in the Open Unlimited category.

The new pledge is for 30t of Sothis Crystalline Gold plus an additional 10t of Painite (which is really just laying there in my cargo hold, and I have no idea what to do with it :) )

Sign up, get rich and famous by winning the Kessel Run (Open Unlimited).
