Does anyone know of a good way of making a map of your route? I kept Slopey's flight log running for my entire trip, so I have every jump logged to the second, I' love to see a flight-path through the galaxy. It wouldn't be exactly straight though:)

I've got a good mind to put together a crude web tool for at least figuring out the coordinates. I had to do this manually for my last run, noting down systems 900Ly apart on a directd line from Sol to Sag A*. Would be nice to have an easy way to plot coordinates that take into account elevation changes.

I can work out a day-by-day route, as I know where I stopped each day. This will give me about 15 way points. I just can't work out how to draw a map without an awful lot of faffing around with screenshots and an image editor.

Good, questions, and great ideas. Unfortunately it is a non-trivial thing to do with the current information that can get extracted on system location, as exact co-ords of each system are not given apart from the rough co-ords that can bee seen on the galmap based on the grid co-ords. (The only one that is shown for sure is Sol at 0,0,0.)

I've done a bit of work in the past on this problem, and a lot of much more talented cmdrs beside me have done a massive amount of work on this. See here - I would guess this is one of the longest threads in the forums :)

A lot of system coordinates have been collected this way and catalogued. Most of the trading tools, etc uses data that has been generated from these guys. I would guess that unless FD release an API that gives actual co-ords, we are many years away from being able to plot an accurate map all the way from Sol to Sag A*, though....just too many systems' data to collect :)

Well, managed to complete my run in just over 24h. I blame GalMap routing issues for not making it in time.
Notes to self for future runs: Check that your starting time screenshot was saved as you leave, not 7.8k light years later. Realise that you should fly in Open, not Private Group. And realise that the starting place is Galileo, not Abraham Lincoln. D'oh!

Oh well. At least I managed to log some details of my run in addition to the exact route and distance between each system:
Total Distance jumped: 26'053.34 Ly (153.35 Ly 'wasted')
Total Jumps: 766
Average Jump Distance: 34.01 Ly
Time Taken: 24h 06m 00s
Ship Status: 93% Hull, 95% Power Plant, 75-100% Canopy, 86.6% Repair Capacity
Screw Ups: 2 minor overheats (flying too close a sun), 4 frameshift drops (flying even closer to a sun)
Dangerous Systems: Prooe Hypue NU-N C23-24 (Four Stars, two close to Primary), Eesholt PZ-X A110-23 (Three Stars, one close to Primary), Athaip SH-W A1-15 (Four Stars, one close to Primary), Athaip YM-Q D6-1407 (Three Stars, one close to Primary)

Hello Sag A! Starship selfie time.
2015-04-26_00026.jpg
That's it for us folks! We made it yesterday of course, but after two grueling days of flying, Cheron and I were pretty well spent. I'll leave our official times for the BuckyBoard, but unofficially I could have made it in 27 hours if I hadn't needed to sleep. There was no way I could endurance staying up that long, jumping, and scooping, and jumping, and scooping.... It was hard enough having to get up that second day and come back to the console.

I had intended to post my CMDRs logs at the end, but they proved to be quite lengthy. Talking to myself was the only thing that kept me going. I'll have to find some special place to put them, for posterity you know. I wonder if I could earn a few credits with them.... I'll try to at least give you the best highlights of the trip.

The start was nearly perfect. Those first 5 hours were awesome, knowing we were really part of something, talking to the other CMDRs, listening to Radio Sidewinder, intercepting Anuranium's transmission. It was exhilarating. I'm not exactly a new pilot, but everything felt so new. I FINALLY learned to scoop a star without stopping. Gotta keep that momentum going in a race. Then I calculated how long the race would take me. *Queue sad music*

About 7 hours into the race, Cheron and I lost power.... *Somebody* kicked the switch on the power strip under the table. The Navigation Gods would later bring retribution on that somebody. It took 15 minutes for my computer to boot back up. That incident called for a nap.

General stats:
-- The computer said "Main fuel tank empty" 15 times. Yep, I was nearly a floating hunk of junk. I'll tell you, a scoopable star is a GLORIOUS site when there's nothing but a sliver on your fuel gauge.
-- I lost count of how many times I took heat damaged. You should see my internal modules. The only ones over 70% were the ones I had turned off. I'm pretty sure I'll lose my cargo hatch somewhere on the way home, it's at 22%.
-- My hull is still at 100%. I only had one emergency stop and that was because I got careless near a brown dwarf. I was really lucky in the fact that I never jumped through a star or landed in the middle of two.

I can't give you more stats than that. There are so many things I wish I'd thought of at the beginning. Now I'm just looking forward to getting home and updating my decals.

I'd like to end by proposing that, should the route planning algorithm ever be improved, this scoreboard be retired to commemorate everyone who bravely participated despite knowing of the impending Galmap Sadness. I, for one, was extremely fortunate during this period, but I know many others suffered. Many more will suffer before it's all over. I think they all deserve to maintain their places of honor should this perplexing misfortune ever be solved.

Congrats! Your hull was in better shape than mine when I finished. I was at 87% and many of my modules are in a worse state. Hopefully I won't take too much more damage now that I'm exploring a little more carefully.

Good to know thanks! I've not looked at the details you linked to yet, but any tooling I do will probably be very minimalistic in nature. I'd probably just calculate the coords and let the commander look up the actual systems. It's mostly be good for planning a speed run. Still, if someone has a viable API I'd definitely want to tap into it. If not I figure I'll eventually get access to the official API when it comes out.

I guess I should have mentioned that I set off on Saturday. Get the feeling it's going to take a while to actually arrive however...

Esvandiary, your record run is getting you a special mention in the news bulletins on Radio Sidewinder :)

Well I'm off...

I don't have the free time or the stamina to do this in one go so I expect to take a while.

See you on the other side...

Run rabbit, run! Dig that (black) hole, forget the sun!

All right CMDRs, got some star pips to hand out here and a few more brave souls setting course for the Big A*!

We have the dyanamic duo of Cheron and Niamhea finishing appropriately enough one after the other in Cheron's Asp Cleopatra, followed by Niamhea's Cobra Meretseger. Though in their Sag A* selfie, they both showed up wearing the same outfit, which is either hugely awkward or marks them as a couple... Right behind them, CMDR Masoboshi finished his split-day venture to claim the coveted star pip! Congrats to all three! Now... enjoy a nice leisurely flight home. ;)

On the unofficial board, CMDR Taraku Minari completed his jaunt to Sadge in the Asp Dawnbringer in a not-too-shabby time just hair over a standard terran day. What do you say, Taraku? Now that you've got the route down, wanna try for the * pip? :)

Taking to the black we have CMDR Khol's Asp WA*sted DA*ys and CMDR Bllicosus's canary yellow Sun Runner. Assuming Bellicosus finishes the journey, and there's no reason to think otherwise, he'll have the first Eagle up on the Leaderboard and possibly the first Eagle at Sag A*. Does anybody else know of an Eagle making the trip? Anyone? We'll have to wait and see. Good luck to both of them.

Warming up in the staging area, welcome back CMDR Rusticolus who was on the board but got bumped when Bucky accidentally hid his row, but is now back in action in the Lakon-6 Euphemia. CMDR Halo Jones also steps up in the Hauler Spirit of the Hoop. We've had several Haulers report to make the run, but so far none have made it. Jones, the top Hauler spot could be yours in a few short(ish) hours!

And a big welcome back to 3-time Buckyball vet Mark "Insane" Photon who intends to put his callsign to the test, flinging his Asp Void Insurance toward the middle. Good luck, Photon, and welcome back!

And finally... Is this right? This isn't a copy-paste error is it? No? sigh... CMDR Anuranium has apparently swapped out the fuzzy dice and changed out the air freshener in the Gjallarhorn to make his third Run on Sag A*. Really, Anuranium... This is just starting to reek of desperation. You'll never beat Alot's time. And if you do, he'll just run again. The last thing any of us want to see is you two battling it out over and over in an endless 52,000 light year struggle to come in first.

(Chuckle, chortle, snicker... Gather around everyone, watch this! This could be EPIC!!!)

And there it is. Today's Big Board. Gonna end this with a plug. I put Radio Sidewinder's logo to fill up some empty space on the Big Board but on my way out to Sag A* I gave it a good listen. All I can say is that if you're not tuning in to RS, you're missing out. Give it a listen, head over to the site and register, tell 'em what a good job they're doing. It's this kind of stuff that makes this game live! :)

Man there are a lot of messages I want to reply to. (Especially FoxTwo. Always come in last do I? I guess it's not considered libel if it's true. :p)

Muahaha I didn't say *ALWAYS* ... I said "usually takes that spot". So there can be times when you're NOT last ... :p

Semantics!

Btw, found tons of Neutron Stars and Black Holes over yonder on the dark side. You guys should have continued going after Sag A* instead of turning back...

oh yes, found my 3rd and 4th Earth-like world too. And I thought those were supposed to be "rare"... pffft! I find them like under every 5th rock or so....

Hey Z... how 'bout a Buckyball ACROSS THE GALAXY eh? Finish line at the tip of one of those spiral arms ?

Breaking news! Local boy makes good! Our very own Esvandiary, CMDR Alot got a GalNet News interview after winning Buckyball 7! Listening now to see exactly how much he LIED ABOUT ALL OF US!

Galnet News: GalNet Tonight episode 5.

There's some news blah blah blah at the start, the good stuff starts at 4:45. Attaway, Alot!

EDIT: Just listened to the whole thing. I think you represented the Run very well, and most importantly did not incriminate anybody other than yourself! Mirana has a whole stack of insurance claims Cady City's station manager mailed to her, and Bucky and I will be sure visit you in prison at least once. ;)

Good show, CMDR! o7

Whilst on a re-listen I feel like I definitely have a voice for newspapers, I'm glad you approve. :)
I definitely don't want to get on Bucky's bad side, I hear he has a mean left hook...

Crumbs, I'm everywhere! I'm famous! This is the part where I buy three golden Anacondas and crash one while high on Onionhead, right?

Crikey! Fame! Great interview Alot!

And thanks for the link to Radio Sidewinder, EZ, I am not sure quite how I survived this long without it. :)

Make sure it gets filmed and put on SpaceYouTube.

Nice interview, I must give that planetary braking (or is it breaking?) a try! Also wanted to say a big thanks for bringing radio sidewinder to my attention. That show rocks although I fear listening in game is going to cause numerous "loops of shame" ... err, sorry, "orbital braking manoeuvres".

Hello all,

Thank You to all the participants, and good luck to those who have set off, or are about to set off.

I Have to admit I wasn't prepared for the dedication required for this event.
But I pushed through the fatigue, and frustration of dealing with the GalMap so close to the core to set my time. Which evidently wasn't good enough to claim Best Time for a T-6.
Not one to be put off, I'll meander my way back to the Civilized Bubble, Exchange what cartographic data I have for credits, then present myself for a Psychological Evaluation at Galileo Station.
Because, Yes, I'm going to make a second attempt. There's got to be around 3 hours I can shave off my time.

Unless something happens and I need to resume my duties as a Field Correspondent for Radio Sidewinder.
