[...] On the unofficial board, CMDR Taraku Minari completed his jaunt to Sadge in the Asp Dawnbringer in a not-too-shabby time just hair over a standard terran day. What do you say, Taraku? Now that you've got the route down, wanna try for the * pip? :) [..]

Let's see. Navigate nearly 26000 light years without seeing another human being, wrestle with the atrocity that is GalMap near Sadge for ages on end again and all that for nothing more than a * and a bumper sticker?
Count me in. And hopefully I can revise my Guestbook Quote of "All in a day's work. Wait a minute..." this time around. It's going to be a while, however, as I'm on a bit of a detour before heading home.

It finally happened. I'm 6,000 lightyears and change out from home, and it hit me.
I forgot to turn off the oven. The fancy Convectionator 280 has all the bells and whistles except an auto-off function, and I've been good about remembering to turn it off, but something about this trip has me distracted, and I've forgotten and left it on.

Except.. wait.. no, that was the Cobra, this ship.. DOESN'T HAVE AN OVEN!

My eyes snap open to waves of heat as Moya struggles to enter the corona of the Type-F I neglected to see. Too many margaritas and too little sleep. Again. I mash the throttle to full and pull Moya's nose away from the inferno. Alarms are blaring and I slam my helmet on just as the control panels begin arcing. Again. Ten seconds go by like a year before I finally make it out of the danger zone. Check the systems, don't want to be stranded.. I purge the life support to clear the smoke and make a few minor repairs while I wait for the adrenaline to subside.

I lock in a course into the deep black and set the proximity alarms, head to the bunk, but I can't sleep. It's too.. boring out here. When the crash of sirens and crackle of electricity are the only excitement after a month in deep space, you start to wonder what else there is to do. 10 hours later, I still taste smoke but the headache is gone. I check the comms panel and find this week's data packet - nav updates, love letters, past-due notices, the usual - when something catches my eye. "Buckyball Run A*"? GalNet says it's open to all, and I have a few .. modifications to this old gal that ought to surprise the competition. I've always wanted to see the center of the galaxy, getting there in a race will be icing on the cake.

Time to start putting together a checklist while flying home.. and a playlist!

Commander's Name: Madoc Owain
Ship Name: Moya
Ship Type: Asp
Estimated Departure: 0900 EST 5/2/2015

Just for fun, I converted the distance from Sol to Sag A* into parsecs and came up with the answer: 7,975.5 parsecs (26,000 Light Years).

So we can all say our ships "made the Sadge run in less than 8,000 parsecs" the next time an old man and a young boy come looking for passage on your ship, as long as it's a "fast ship", no questions asked.

Eat that, Han!

So the Kessel run is about 1/3 of the distance from Leesti to Witchhaul? Not even enough to turn a mediocre profit on Azure Milk. I always knew Solo was full of it. I reckon' Bucky could take Chewie in a fight too.

Got a great racing suggestion on the first great exploration forum today: Racing through a densely packed planetary ring!

I've got a great candidate which appears as bright white disc as you approach it. Unfortunately it's in the center of the galaxy. You can't go more than a few meters with out having to swerve.

I'll have to see if I can find something closer to populated space... :D

EDIT: Just listened to the whole thing. I think you represented the Run very well, and most importantly did not incriminate anybody other than yourself! Mirana has a whole stack of insurance claims Cady City's station manager mailed to her, and Bucky and I will be sure visit you in prison at least once. ;)

Good show, CMDR! o7

I particularly enjoyed the three things needed to be a Buckyballer, though whether the space next to a T9 is worth considering does very much depend which ship you're in...

(That said, in a Cobra I did once pass through the mailslot underneath a T9 :). It was a bit of using a bug, though, since my Cobra was actually half inside the belly of the T9.)

I have missed so many Buckyball Run challenges! My last one was number 5 so I'm registering my intent to race here.

Commander Name: Dean Smith
Ship Name: Athena
Ship Type: Anaconda

Can't wait to get going, have to trim the sails a little bit first!

I reckon' Bucky could take Chewie in a fight too.

Oooh, that would be the fight of the century. Where to hold it? Can't be on Lave, they cut down all the forests; so no jungle.

It would be a quick fight, and I would definitely have my credits on Bucky. I've met reds in real life, and poor Chewie would be an ornamental rug quicker than I can down a Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster.

Sigh... 31,000 LY from Sol and now I have to turn back....

Jumped into a trinary star system and got caught in the corona of 2 stars when exiting hyperspace. By the time I managed to get far enough away, hull down to 75% and most modules are 70% or less. One AFMU totally spent, the other has about 2000 ammo left.

That's rotten luck. in 6750 systems systems explored so far it's only ever happened to me once. And I was in populated space at the time so didn't matter much.

Black Box recovery of CMDR TerranBlade's ship The Lilly.

Log 1: Have just surfaced from the hanger awaiting permission to launch and will be taking off for my run to Sagittarius A*
View attachment 32604

Log 2: First few hours of the run are going fine, no major issues seem to be on time with fastest ship of my type. Streamed the start of my run back to my family so they could watch, but cut the stream after a few near misses with suns close to each other.
View attachment 32598

Log 3: After several more hours of nothing and becoming careless in my handling, I manage to fly my ship into the gravity well of a brown dwarf. Getting dropped out of super cruise and a much needed wake up call I assess the damages to the ship and continue to push forward.

Log 4: I have just crossed over the half way mark. I believe the ship has taken more damage than originally assessed. The closer I travel to the Sagittarius A* the longer it takes the nav system to plot my path. I system reboot maybe in store to fix the issue.

Log 5: I have finally rebooted the system, things to be a bit better. It seems the computer was to hot, so after a few minutes of no power to cool the whole ship, and restart things seem to be working better. I will admit though they are still sub-par, and the damages from earlier encounters are becoming apparent.

Log 6: Only 7k Ly away, nav computer becoming more stressed. Had another close call where I was dropped out of super cruise while refueling. I was trying to save some time, by plotting the next part of the route but due to previous damages it took to long and I flew into the gravity well of yet another star. I will push on though.

Log 7: Have only managed to go another 2k Ly in 2 hrs, due to this stupid computer, I'm starting to fall asleep at the helm. I must call it for the night or risk further damages to the ship. I will set the computer to run diagnostics, and repair any broken components when I wake up. Maybe the ship just needs a break too.

Log 8: After a good rest, and repairing the computer things seem to be looking up. The first few route plots have gone fine as a test on the system. Now I must continue. If I'm good I can still make the 24hr mark.

Log 9: Well I managed to get another 3k LY before the nav computer started acting up again. I'm only 2k away at this time, but it has become slow going again, my original guess of making 24 hrs is gone. I'm beginning to question if I will even make it. I found damage to the haul exposing wires, which is probably the cause of my nav problems. Shutting down all unnecessary systems, and functions.

Log 10: I write this as I sit and speak with my family and I sit at Sagittarius A*. I made it, but it has become very clear I wont make it back. When I started this journey I was full of hope and excitement that I could even beat if not come close to the fastest time in my ship type. Now I sit and stare into the blackhole that will consume me. I have said my good byes and lived a full life I just hope this black box is recovered so those who attempt this know just how truly dangerous it is. And for those who want to know my time 28 hrs, 8 minutes, 19 seconds, ship name The Lilly, Lakon Type 6. This is CMDR TerranBlade signing off.

Don't give up hope!

Think of your family! Think if your friends! Think of the millions you'll make from turning in all that exploration data!

Think of Bucky, waiting to hand you that bumper sticker!

Good god, man, think of the bumper sticker!

(and +rep for a great pilot's log. I'll get your time and star-pip on tomorrow's update. :) )

Yeah, this is also the first time it's happened. Unfortunately I didn't have my video recorder going, but it was like time slowed down for me... exiting hyperspace, and saw 3 balls of fire rushing towards me, fuel scoop activated on its own even before coming to a stop after the drop from hyperspace.

(At this point IRL I was saying "OH F-yew-CK!")

Klaxons blaring, Betty going "Warning... taking heat damage" and sparks going off all around the cockpit. I tried to look at the heat percentage but guess what? I couldn't see a thing cuz the orange UI was camouflaged by the star in front of me. So I tried to turn to face space-ward.. and lo! There was another star thataway... much bigger one... so I flipped 180 and OMG a 3rd one!

Eventually found a small "corridor" of space between the stars, and kicked it... and FSD dropped me into normal space cuz I got too close to one of those stars... that took 20% off my hull. By this time my heat was 200% and still climbing. Popped a heatsink and that brought the heat down somewhat while I frantically tried to get back into FSD... but the 40-second cooldown was literally killing me....

Eventually when heat rose to 223% my ship leapt back into Supercruise and I hauled ass outta there.

Sitting there in space I shut everything down and let the ship cool, and that was when I saw the depressing state of my ship... most modules under 70%, hull at 75%. Powerplant at 70%. Spent an entire AFMU repairing important systems such as life support, FSD etc back to 100%, left the others eg weapons, cargo hatch at whatever damage level they sustained.

Did you submit your time to Bucky? You should, after all that adventure getting there! :) Get yr asterisk and yr bumper sticker and you can brag to ladies at the bar about how you made it to Sag A*...

A word of warning FoxTwo - disabling your Life Support module for repair is dangerous (depending on the class), as reactivating it doesn't replenish it. I nearly got caught out on my first SA* run, realised at 0:14 on the oxygen counter that something was amiss!

Let's put it this way - at 31,000 LY out, whatever time you have on Life Support is pointless :D

I had a suspicion senility was setting in .... somehow this run sounds like FUN? LOL

Erp  ...I'm beginning to seriously doubt my wisdom in leaving heat sink launchers off for the race - I'm still out near Sag A*, and by your account, if it weren't for the heat sink, you would probably be toast....

Hahah yeah for whatever it's worth, it was my first time after jumping to so many thousands of systems. And yeah I figure without that heatsink I would have had a fast-track express ticket back to Sol minus my exploration data :D

Plus, it's just the luck of the draw. You can't really tell what kind of star system your destination is, unless you had your map in REALISTIC mode and clicked it and see whether additional stars pop up on the map at the destination. In this particular case, this was just a "midway" system along my route to a Neutron Star... so I spent even LESS time "checking it out" than usual before jumping.

The upside is... this forces me to speed up my "return journey" to Sol... at current distance, if I do a Buckyball-style return to Sol (jumping non-stop, no scanning), it'd take around 26 to 28 hours.

That is, assuming I don't run into another one of these binary/trinary systems on the way :D
