General / Off-Topic Building a wall

So MR T seems to be set on building his wall

He's still adamant that Mexico are going to pay.

The question is how.

There seems to be a lot of talk about a border adjustment tax, which appears to be a tax on goods made outside the US entering the country.

As Mexico exports a lot to the US the idea is this could add up to billions a year.

My question is this:

If (lets say) a Mexican car is shipped to the US, costing $20k

A 20% border tax is charged, so not the car costs $24k ($20k for the car and $4k in tax).

The car is then sold to a soccer mom for $24k.

Is it Mexico paying the tax or the US consumer?

I mean, if the Mexican car plant cuts it price to $16.6k so that after the border tax it's now the same £20k as before then you could argue that maybe the Mexican car plant is paying, but if the Mexican's hold their prices then isn't the US consumer ultimately paying?

Yes. American's will be paying for a wall that doesn't work.

And even though hardcore Trump supports will say its a lie, fake news, or alternative facts. This is the simplest explanation without going into to much detail:

The Wall

The barrier is mostly there already, and Trump won't replace it with a literal concrete wall.

a) it would cost an insane amount

b) it would be terrible for actually policing the border, as the agents couldn't see through it.

Agents won't need to. Raytheon will be contracted to build attack drones that will launch missiles at anything within a 100 meters of a no-go zone if it doesn't pick up a valid signal from a passport or US visa ;)

Or something.

It matters little who is going to pay for it, because it will be the hard working tax payers. What matters is, who is going to profit from it; now who do we know is in the construction business?

Can't think of anyone....

It will never be finished. They'll do a few miles that look imposing...take some pictures of American workers getting the job done...Donnie will put on a hard hat for a photo shoot and then it will be forgotten after the companies that got the sweet no bid contract deals walk off with billions of dollars and an unfinished wall.

Now, it might be possible to get Mexico to pay for it. I assume Trump will hold access to the American market hostage until Mexico pays for the wall. However, it won't be that easy. China is already moving in on Mexico and making diplomatic progress. Mexico will have trade deals with China and won't need to trade with the US anymore.

That is one way to kill a trade deficit.

but that's the point. isn't almost anything the US does to trade to try and get money from Mexico, ultimately money from US consumers?

any tariffs they charge on Mexican goods will have to be paid by US consumers.

the taxes will cause the price pf Mexican goods in the US to rise.

it would be like me charging my wife an extra 10% on all her amazon orders to pay for a new shed and claiming Amazon paid for the shed. Amazon don't give a toss what happens once the parcel reaches my door. My wife gets annoyed because amazon stuff costs more so maybe she buys less but is she going to blame amazon or me?

Mr T will have to tweet hard to convince people that them paying higher prices for stuff means Mexicans are paying for his wall.

Trump is attacking Mexican trade...

Updated: Added both an Exports and Imports map to get an idea of whats going on and if its even viable to try and charge the Mexicans for the wall through trade.

Ex president Fox of Mexico responded (live) to news that Trump wants to put 20% on all Mexican goods by saying the Mexico will put 20% tax on all USA goods.

USA export far more to Mexico than Mexico to USA.

Actually this is pretty much what the WH is saying now...the wall will be paid by a 20 percent tariff on Mexican goods. Guess I should buy the last Avocado I'm ever gonna eat.

So Arizona, Utah and Texas are going to be the most heavily impacted by this....who did they vote for? Oh...yeah, LOL

So the GDP of Mexico is 1200 billion a year, and the wall is *only* going to cost 8 billion. That's slightly less than one percent of their GDP! What could they possibly object to?!! ;-)

While Mexico's GDP is 1.2 Trillion, America's is 16.7 Trillion. America should pay for there own bad ideas.

Haha Yes. I thought the same when I saw this. I mean I realize a bunch of states put in for this guy... but still. And then his idea to change NAFTA with Canada as well. We need the US the US needs us. Its that simple. But okay Mr. T. (I take him about as serious as the original Mr. T as well).
