Newcomer / Intro Can anyone explain this power issue to me please, I'm stumped!

My power usage when DEPLOYED is 9.00, which is exactly what my power plant provides. So technically, when I have everything deployed, and all power priority set to 1, there should be no issues.

So why does my ship SOMETIMES have shutdowns when I deploy my hardpoints? not all the time.

edit: I'm tryin to attach the screenshots but it keeps telling me "oops, we ran into some problems"

Whatever the cause you need to adjust the priorities on your modules that way when you deploy your hardpoints the modules shutdown will be the ones you don’t need at that point.
I set mine something like this.
  1. Thrusters, FSD, PD, Life Support, Sensors.
  2. Shields, Point Defence, SLF, Heat Sinks.
  3. Weapons and tools.
  4. SRV, Fuel Scoop.
  5. Cargo Hatch.
If you can keep the priority one total below 40(50)% then it should still work even with a badly damaged power pack.

1. Your screenshots are crap - cropped out the important column. ;)

2. Images have to be under 1MB to be directly uploaded on this board.

3. WOT @aRJay says - sort your priorities. (Then you can think about @Factabulous' engineering tip.)

P.S. Welcome and say hello to WInston. :alien:

Looks like a combat build....

That being the case, unless you are doing combat salvage, you can set the Priority on the Cargo Hatch to 2 and the entire problem goes away.

If you don't have Cargo space, you can just disable the Cargo Hatch because it is using power without ever providing benefit.

This is the first thing people do in a Vulture to resolve its power equation issues.

Similar thoughts for the Standard Docking Computer, doesn't need to be allocated in combat.

Like others have stated, Sort out your priorities for the ship, turn the cargo off and set the docking comp to 3 or 4.
You don't need them in combat, unless you are grabbing stuff afterwards

Hey,

1. Which important bits have I cut out, I'm curious for future uploads.
2. Thanks, that explains why the "oops" kept popping up.
3. I know about priorities, engineering etc. I was specifically asking if max power (9.0/9.0) is considered over the limit.

Who the heck is Winston?

1. I was referring to the priorities column.

2. welcome

3. The rounding explanation had already been given correctly by @metatheurgist in post 2.

Winston Churchill is said to have battled all his life with depression which he called the Black Dog.

"... the mood of despondency that had sometimes come upon him in his most active years - which, following Samuel Johnson, Churchill called the "black dog" ... "

If I'm reading that screenshot correctly you have a 3D power plant. That would be your problem right there.

You are, and it is. Along with a 3E shield.

BlackDogD, you seem very new to the game. Here's a link to EDSY. You can use it to help guide you to how you want to build your ship and engineer it. Once you're done messing around there, below are a couple more useful links.

Inara - This site can help you keep track of your game. Plus it also helps you find where to buy ships, modules, and even commodities. It also has other stuff. It's basically a mega-site for the game.

EDSM - Elite Dangerous Star Map. This is mostly used by explorers to keep track of what systems they've been to and discovered.

EDDB - Elite Dangerous Data Base. This site is a commodities market tracker (the one site I wish I knew about when I first started playing). If you're doing any sort of trading this (and the tracker on Inara) can help you by finding what it is you're looking to buy, how much it costs, how much is in stock, how far the system is from you, how far from the parent star the market is, best place to sell said items for the most profit, and all that sort of jazz.

Take all this info in a bit slowly, as it is a lot and I'd hate to accidentally scare you away from the game. This game has a steep learning curve, but once you start to get the hang of it it's quite enjoyable.

Equipment in the starter zone is very limited. 3D PP is best available for their ship, as is the 3E shield.

Worth bearing in mind these things.

Yes, the equipment I have is the best available.

I really just wanted to know if 100% power usage was considered over the limit. Metatheurgist informed me it was a rounding issue.

As long as the power requirement doesn’t exceed 100% before you deploy hard points then by careful assignment of power priorities to the modules you should be fine as the stuff given the higher numbers gets shut down first, if you cannot power weapons defences and essentials at the same time then it is time to rethink the build.

Just one shot of engineering to your PP and you need never puzzle over that again . far faster than working out what's up.
True, but setting power priorities, as aRJay wrote, does indeed increase you survival chances if you get shot up badly. All my PP are engineered and I still strive for that -40% on my ships.

I also noticed that modules set to 4-5 seem to "sacrifice" themselves sooner, than those higher up, when you take damage. Not sure if this is because of the priority but it's still pretty cool. Maybe someone can clarify this. o7
