Can someone please explain the point of the codex?

I'm confused by the supposed purpose of the new codex.

I thought it would be some kind of encyclopedia/information centre but it turns out to be more of a sightseeing guide.

I'm sure it must be more useful somehow...just can't figure out how.

Thanks.

I have wondered this myself. I dont think its going to be involved much in my gameplay. Maybe it will surprise me.

It is used to guide exploration. For example, a galnet article coukd mention a new thargoid thingy, which then gets added as a rumour to the codex. People can launch an expedition (with a dedicated squadron if people want to), and when found everyone receives the location in the codex. So the entire thibg is now in-game, shared and purpose-driven.

So instead of DWE2 going to beagle because 'whatever', people can explore with purpose in mind. :)

That's helpful. Thanks. Rep.

Any advice from others?

This is a related question: I have some new discoveries since 3.3 so should my name appear in the codex? If so I can't find it.

The Codex lists every 'type' of thing you can discover in each sector (or at least those that are found by others or 'rumoured' to exist). If you are the first to discover a previously 'rumoured' or even unknown object, you get credited for that type in that sector. If other people had already discovered something of that type (so it is listed as 'reported' before you found it) then you dont get your name added, it'll only change the status of that object to 'confirmed' and list the first system in that sector you personally found it. In other words, you can then see where/when that object was first found by someone in that sector, and then when and where you found that type yourself (and later on where you found the biggest/smallest/hottes/coldest and such of each type, per sector). It is NOT a list of all things you discovered.

Still befuddled, but I'm glad someone gets it :D

Well, I used the codex to look up the Guardian data thingy, plotted a course to the reported system and now I am in an area with GUardian sites where I can hop around, scan systems and collect material for the tech broker.

Haha, okay. The codex is grouped per sector, and the galaxy is divided in 42 sectors. It'll show you the objects (e.g. 'supergiant Type F star' or 'earth-like world' or 'water geyser') in the sector you are currently in, and there are three possible 'states'. Lets take a black hole as an example.

1) Rumoured. This means noone has found a black hole yet in the sector, but FD told us there is at least one.
2) Reported. Some other player found a black hole in the sector, but you haven't. If you want to you can see where this other person found the first one, and go there yourself.
3) Confirmed. You have personally found a black hole in the sector (and that specific black hole may or may not have been discovered by someone else earlier, it is just the first black hole in the sector YOU found).

Now, if you 'confirm' an object that noone else had previously found there (so you find a black hole, and nobody else had found any black hole in the entire sector) not only does the status become 'confirmed' (because you found one) but your name is listed for all to see as the person who found the first black hole in the system. To be clear, finding a specific black hole nobody found before is not enough to get your name in the codex, it only happens if nobody found any kind of black hole in the entire sector so you are literally the first one to show proof that kind of thing exists at all in the sector.

Lastly but importantly: objects can exist without being listed in the codex. That means 1) Nobody found one yet, and 2) FD didn't tell us by listing it as 'rumoured'. As a result, the 'starting sector' (including the bubble) is the sector that has the most stuff in the codex. That doesnt mean there is more to find here, it just means we have already found a lot of stuff here, because the majority of people are in this sector.

It's for people to share discoveries. Its also a repository for in game lore. I find it quite a cool addition.

That helps, thanks!

I love the Codex, but it seems to be primarily for the sort of players who will never read this thread - the gamers who don't want to browse fansites to get the lore or keep up with forums or reddit to learn about the latest finds of explorers.

It's a good thing for Elite to have as much of that as possible be accessible in-game.

Spot on Explanations of the Discoveries section from Sleutelbos already, so I'll just add that there's the other 2 sections as well.

The 1st section has your session log, personal statistics and an archive of logs and messages you've discovered (Tourist Beacons, Generation Ships, that kind of stuff). That last set of stuff in particular is things which previously would have appeared in your messages but then been permanently lost when that part of the message window cleared.

The 2nd section is Discoveries.

The 3rd section is a bit more encyclopedia-esque and contain info on background on various things in the game - significant characters, the SuperPowers, Corporations, Aliens, and some other stuff.

There's always been a lot of things to the game which have often relied on people frequenting the right bits of the internet just to even know about. The Codex now provides a lot of that stuff directly to the entire playerbase in-game.

Edit - I'm not really sure how that stuff could have been missed so maybe I'm misunderstanding your post.
