Can't connect to adjudication server

I'll bet it's the new centralised mission (no more board flipping) server that's going under. It's the one major backend change they've made.

Well, if I cant get on tonight my dander will be officially at level nine, and it hasn't been that high since 1984 when my tape player broke and ruined my original Elite cassette.

They may be operating on AWS servers, but they've not paid for elasticity, or the game isn't built to scale out... In theory, AWS should spin up more instances to cope with extended load (if configured properly). To have a multiplayer online game that can't apparently cope with 10,000 players attempting to log on is a bit poor really.

Pretty sure there are more than just 10k logins. There are multiple private groups with a full 20k roster. And not everyone uses Steam, so Steam charts are pretty close to worthless. Even some Steam players, myself included, often bypass Steam entirely when playing.

And this isn’t my first major update - things are always flakey the first few days to a week after.

Software and networking are hard and even with testing it is easy for there to be unexpected problems uncovered once there are more eyes and higher stress on everything.
So I have a fair bit of sympathy.
That said I'm also pretty miffed this is taking as long as it is to fix - I would have expected scaling up sever capability would have been relatively painless. Aparently not.. Hopefully they can figure out what the problem is and have it sorted by the weekend.

I left the game on overnight. I'm still sitting on the pad.
I hope everyone else's problems are resolved quickly.

So does the tradition/saying need to change from "Never fly on Patch Day" to "Never fly on Patch Week"?

The trick is to start playing ED again after an update just as all the whingers, moaners and rage quitters have hung up the ED pilots boots, i'd give it a day or two yet, as from the forums there are still some die hard whingers hanging on in there moaning about how ED has ruined their life and FD are the worst programmers and developers this side of the black stump. I reckon see the weekend out and all the toys will be out of their prams, it will be good to go back.

As a moaner myself I can tell you that most of that is true but simply not complete. While many of us enjoy the new stuff (I'm a PvPer and the new exploration overhaul is amazing) it drains my motivation in seconds when I see server errors that have been more than obvious after a months ahead announced latch and a 9 hour server downtime. OFCOURSE all players are trying to connect at the same time. It was obvious and they didn't take any steps to proactive counter act this. Not even a login queue or a block for players not ingame to atleast guarantee smooth gameplay for the already playing players.
Or just spend money already in servers. I've seen it myself, live. It's really not that hard and expensive to rent a bunch of servers for a short period of time to deal woth the sudden but expected peak of players. Or upgrade the server capacity overall. More expensive but works too. You can always add more hardware. But doing absolutely nothing and not even stating any detailed information is just poor respect towarda the customers.

Crimson, i never had you down as a die hard whinger?

What you say is true, and if this was the first time this loss/lack of forethought into extra server capacity after a HUGE update, i would be up there with you shouting off your pedestal, but come on man, you been round the FD block many many times, and this is a REGULAR thing with them. This has happened EVERY time they release and i have been updating since 1.3!

Elite's on sale at Steam too... £4.79 at last look or £9.59 for the Cmdr Edition (76% reduction). I'd expect to see more new players, not less due to AWS issues. Of course, these might also result in moans, complaints and even worse steam reviews if the server problems continue.
