The main thing you did wrong was buy from G2A in the first place.
Contact support (raise a ticket via the option in the launcher) and hope for the best. If support can't help you may wish to seek the money back from the dodgy seller you paid to get the (possibly) dodgy key.

Problem with launching game via Steam
Hi, The issue I have is that when I launch the game via steam and chose ED:Horizons, the launcher opens up and tells me it requires an update. I carried out the manual update instructions and apparently steam isn't showing an update. I then decided to launch directly from the install...
So, have you actually created a frontier account for the game to link to?
Well, as they created a forum account today - that is a frontier account, so they can link it to that. Or create yet another, but only security paranoids like me would do that
Like I said, get in contact with support and raise a ticket, the chances are they will be able to help.

... but you don't need to "link" you can just close that dialogue and click "Log In" on the launcher can't you?

yep it only have link and use the existing account that all I see
