Card Temp Comparison...

Okay, so to my surprise, I've been able to run ED on my Rift at a decent frame rate with minimal stutter on a 4GB GTX770.
The only downside is that the gpu core temp is 77c, which eventually makes the room uncomfortably warm.

What sort of temperatures are you guys looking at with newer cards? Lower temps might encourage me to upgrade sooner rather than later :).

You can safely assume that Rift + ED + Settings adjusted for better eye candy will take any available GFX card to the max usage at times (Planetary etc)
I can give you a "bad" example of my AMD 290 which is consistent max 86 deg C even after optimization (VR Low settings, 1.2 Oculus debug tool oversampling, undervolting by -37mv on OC 1025 up from 975, lots of case fans, custom fan profile)
Without optimizing card does go to 94 and throttle. But thats to be expected of the 290...

personally I will get a next gen card when rx480 is released and prices have settled(+2 months) or Ti/RX490 is announced

I'm running a 980ti, with all ED settings on high/ultra and the Oculus SDK pixel density on 1.5 and no stutter, and I'm getting temps of around 75 deg C. It does sound like every fan in the PC is going at full speed tho.

My 1080 idles at around 35c but hits 80c when using VR in Elite and 2 monitors.

Should I be worried about this and look into water cooling? I mean my case is a nice big NZXT setup with decent fans and a CPU water cooler!

No, it will hit 80c at load on the default fan profile (the founders edition)

Use a custom fan curve with a 1:1 ratio and you will find it tops out at 75 even with a decent overclock.

Thermal throttling is an issue with the top end cards. Watch this vid for solutions.

Also note that different GPU vendors have varying cooling techniques and can vary up to 10C between the same card model running the same benchmark. Temps also depend on type of case, air flow and location of the PC. YMMV.

how mayn more fps do you get with two 1080 in VR versus just one of them? Is it worth it?

no it's not worth it, I have it just cos I can :)

I do get 140fps on planets in 4k with 2 x ss on though

in VR turning sli off and running 1 card only actually runs better

Watercooled 6700K @ 4.6Ghz runs about 50°C with medium load. Tops out at 60°C when flat out.
With a MSi 980ti @ stock settings (clock and fan) I settle at about 76°C (75% fan) flat out.

The new gen GPUs will run cooler.

mine did 84 before i smacked on some EVGA Hybrid kits.. now they do 40-45 degrees on full load.

Very nice temps, before i used the custom profile mine was the same 84-85c and throttling all the time.

What's your clock settings ?

mine did that to, and the room temps went up with it.

the card does so much better with the lower temps.
but its still running the ref card stock clock, so 1074mhz. but i run them SLI.. but so far ive read thats not going to work with VR atm..
