Casinos in E:D?

Well, since GTA has opened a casino today, one question that has been on my mind for a long time: Why is there no gambling and no casinos in E: D?

Here is my suggestion:
  • Casinos are limited to anarchy systems, always placed in the station furthest from the sun.
  • They offer the usual casino games (black jack, poker, baccara etc.)
  • Additionally they offer an engineer!
    • Meaning: You bring a module and certain or random mats, risk them and RNG provides you with a 'godroll', if you are lucky.
    • Ofc those do not exceed the normal engineered modules, as every superb value brings a very weak value with it, like a shieldbooster with 200 % more shield but also 200 % more weight or heat...

That's what I suggested in the 400b Procgen vs handcrafted thread.

There are installations in this game. Agri installations, Naval installations.
We should be able to land on them. Just put landing pads.

And some of these installations look like resorts in space.
They should have casinos where we can punt with our credits.

I imagine that a system to play classic casino games should be easy. But I imagine it more like Fallout: New Vegas, just a novelty. It could also help to drain some credits. Those things can be addictive and alway set to make you lose.

Alas, people would probably expect the space legs and atmospheric flight before that.

Lol. So you're ARXing for Casinos like in GTA? The ones getting panned for letting you spend real money, but not convert that back out of the game?

Oh dear 🤦‍♀️

I read again and again and even Ctrl+F "Money" but I can't find where OP talks about betting real-life money, just that GTA opened one, that's all.

I really like the idea, and give them to frontier time ago...
I think that will be good a big casino station (like a “jameson memorial”) where people can reach them fisically and play the classic casino’s games with their credits (do credits now it’s very simple and fast).

It could work if they did it like Red Dead, where you pay a minuscule entry fee so as not to encourage actual gambling. You could add achievements to encourage people to interact with it.

what a bether way to limit even more the range of customers a niche game like Elite have, than to add a mechanic that is considered a crime in a good quantity of countries.

wow people actually like this idea, but no one likes the idea of a few player owned systems in the form of 'share's owned' in a system that would pay out to the player depending on their percentage of contribution in the initial annexation of said system while giving a reason to defend or improve the economy of that system given your stake. Yet people seem to want to have a space casino they can gamble in. Not against it btw, just probably wouldn't visit it, althou as someone said, depending on some laws in other countries & if 'credits' become a real thing you can buy in the frontier shop, it will begin to walk a thin line, unfortunately EA have spoiled the loot box shtick hence now why the profiteers in CS:GO are keeping a close eye on the US & EU on which way they will end up steering on this, especially given the traditional gambling lobbies don't like gaming companies not being subjected to the same rules. But if its purely an in game feature that does not involve any link to real cash, its probably more than future proofed to get around any future laws that may get passed through.

Lol, no. However, as this is a suggestion, your interpretation seems a bit far fetched, doesn't it?

You want to go back to Engineers 1.0?
This is a troll thread isn't it?

No, it's called suggestion. ;) The code exists more or less and if applied in a proper form, not allowing god-rolls, why not? -> Content, baby!

Some kind of in-game card game (like Gwent in Witcher) or similar could be nice. Something you could play against NPCs and other players. Playing for money would probably be pointless but maybe wager for reduced restock/refuel prices on a station/outpost or something. Or maybe chance to win some special modules. I dunno.

Imagine getting ganked by some gambling addict because they want more chips to flush down the toilet. If it’s real money you’re gambling with and they try to pirate the money out of you, is that real robbery?

Better yet, you’ll land at an engineers base and some schmuck in an SRV would have used ARX to call his craft “Need cash, please give, God bless you”.

Finally, with space legs, you’ll stroll through a station to see a CMDR, flat out on the floor, in a puddle of their own mess, begging for money because they ‘feel lucky’.

There is one problem with this idea - gambling in gaming like you are advocating is under a lot of scrutiny and may be subject to future excessive regulation or even censorship.

WRT the idea specifically - no to engineering in any shape or form, but perhaps yes to rare materials/data. Providing of course the materials/data are the only currency accepted and when betting against other materials/data only the grade/rarity is counted.

In the casino(s), material/data should be traded in/out at a cashier contact with credit chips being the Casino currency. The material/data value in casino credit chip terms may be static or variable but ultimately the value would be shown on a screen via the cashier contact. Casino credit chips would be the only thing gambled and rarer materials might be offered only as bonus rewards (for beating the house so to speak). The rarer materials may (or may not) be tradable at the Cashier. Material/Data trader values could be used as a baseline for the casino credit chip values.

Real world money, Arx, game credits, ships, modules, or cargo should not be factored in to this IMO.

Pls no gambling, Or raise the rating to 18 / M is that what you want?
I am inclined to agree - however, just because there is a gambling element does not mean that any given game needs to be rated as 18/M - the proviso being that no real-world cash is involved. Local regulations may vary but there are numerous examples of games with non-real-world-cash gambling elements that are not 18/M related.
