Catalogue of Galactic Nebulae - submit your planetary nebulae!

BTW, the above only includes the first two sheets in the spreadsheet. I'll work the third into it, where possible. It has to look up the coordinates using the star names.

OK, that was quick:

Great idea!
CMDR marx, you just gave me some work to do during the weekend :) I have 57 planetary nebulae with my tag which i will need to put into that form + some screenshots. Unfortunately i didnt keep record of PNs which i visited but found them tagged. The number would be around 250-300 i guess.

I think it's looking good enough to include in the EDastro maps.

Right now it's lumping the real nebulae in with the proc-gen full-size nebulae, but I could colorize those separately too.

Fun fact: looked at the Codex a bit the other day, and I found a planetary nebula in the Sagittarius-Carina Arm region. (Spasau YU-X e1-13) Codex entries were near it, but not in the system proper; just noticed it when zooming out. Would be good to know if there are NSPs in the system though.

Also, I've begun adding nebula models as well, will post example pictures later.

Hm, say, could you include the region borders on it as well? Might be interesting to see that.

This is an awesome thread! Gonna post 2 PNs I found (already tagged though) that are not in the spreadsheet. Any tips on finding PNs? Are only neutron stars the cause of PN creation (think it should)?

In the real world, planetary nebulae appear to come from the end of low-to-medium star masses. In Elite's world, I haven't really looked into it - has anybody?
As for finding them, I haven't done that either. Guess the tips would be to keep your eyes open while you travel, and if you're looking for them on the galaxy map, filter out everything so nothing obscures the nebulae. And you can see in the excellent pictures above where most of them are.

Speaking of which, @ Orvidius: how does that look from the sides? (Leaving out the real PNs that are far off the plane.)

Submitting my list. Apologies for not having galaxy map screenshots. Some previously uploaded pictures with nice nebula scenery can be found in a link in my sig.

Edit: have the info about the central star type and the nebula color - in case anyone is interested.

Thanks! And sure, more information would be better. I'm including nebula models now, and since I need to verify your finds, I'll look them up anyway, but having their colours included would be good to double-check with.

Also, it might be the smallest in the galaxy. Tiny nebulae are somewhat uncommon - I've been marking them under the notes, but it's not complete - but that one was I think the smallest I've seen so far.

Hm, so the +/- 1 sector boundaries off the plane (the "neutron star layer") aren't visible on this. Interesting. Thanks!

Compare it with this.

Yeah, I suspect that the suppression bars might be more visible if these were significantly more numerous and plotted as heatmaps. With static dots and a much smaller number of them, the bars probably aren't visible due to the number of dots that are closer to the plane in the other areas. The vertical bar is barely visible in the overhead (main) map, but that's about all.

I have a few to submit, finally. When I found my (until now) only undiscovered planetary nebula, it was in a group of them, all about 3kly from Colonia. I've tried to find some of those again, and I think this list only has one or two of the ones I looked at previously, and a bunch of others that I hadn't seen before. I didn't visit these, so I don't know who the actual discoverers are, but I verified the existence of those systems in EDSM. I suppose we could always add the EDSM discoverer.

But what's cool is that of these, one did not exist in EDSM. I flew out to it, and it was untagged! So now I have a second one with my name on it, after two years since the last one. I don't spend a lot of time looking for these, since I just assume they're all tagged these days. :D

Sorry for the varying and poor quality of the screenshots. I was taking shots in VR just to record the names, to look them up in EDSM later.

No worries about the quality of the screenshots, I got everything needed from them. Thanks, and congrats on finding a new planetary nebula!

Oh, and sure, the EDSM discoverers could always be added, but I'd do it with a question mark, to note that it's not certain. Might have been found by someone else prior to the journals, or just not uploaded to EDSM.

I continued searching through that area a bit more. I'm sure I've still missed a lot, but I found several more that aren't in the spreadsheet. Two of them weren't in EDSM as systems, so I flew to them and saw who the discoverers were. Apparently I had already been to one of the others, and so I was able to view the map and see the tags there too.

I've been finding a bunch of them that are already in the spreadsheet too, so I've been leaving those out.

I also looked up the names on EDSM and placed those with question marks for the ones that I didn't fly out to.

Batch #3 is a little larger, with 32 entries. I have discoverer names for several of them, since I was able to visit them along my path. This might be the last batch for a while, depending on what I do next. :) I verified that they weren't in the spreadsheet already. All of these systems exist in EDSM.
