Celebrating 35 years of Elite!

Probably one of my fondest memories of Elite Dangerous was me and a friend of mine went out to a low-g planet and race SRV rovers. We decided to land 100 km from an outpost, and the first person to get there would win. I brought down my little type 6 which I lovingly named the thicc bricc down next to my friend who was already there in his asp waiting for me. We got out our rovers and started the race. It was really fun, and eventually, it turned into a shooting match between the two of us when my friend decided to fire a few shots for fun. I ended up getting destroyed, but jokes on him, I took off and caught up to him in my ship and blasted him too. It was a blast and really showed how much fun the expansive open-world universe of elite dangerous can be with friends. I'll never forget that excursion because it was probably the most fun I ever had in a multiplayer game. Just me, my friend and our rovers as we screamed across a moon.

So yeah, congratulations on 35 years of making awesome games!

My favorite memory of Elite Dangerous is when we had things to discover and a plot that moved because players found correct solutions to mysterious phenomena.

Back then, you could reasonably belive that Raxxla could be found. Back then, there was a sense of awe and terror as you stumbled across a hidden plot that could change everything.

Nowadays, we wait for updates and hope the content is worth it. Frontier need to realize that a purely player driven plot is only viable if the galaxy responds to our actions. We need a talented dungeon master to oversee the overarching plots and tools to immerse ourselves in this wonderful galaxy. Otherwise the lore just becomes complex wallpaper that's arguably more interesting than the game itself at times. There's so many plotlines that need fleshing out...

We shouldn't be thinking back to our favorite moments with longing for better times. Those moments should be examples of the best Frontier can offer, with more to come.

Doh, not getting the prize for sure but...

Hunting that d*mn Constrictor with Military lasers was thrilling!

Yes, on C-64...

My commander's name: Omega Weaver.

Memorable moment:

Login after September updates, all engineered modules are gone. Yah, FD finally get rid of engineering ! Turned out it's a short-lived 🤣

Happy Birthday, FD

Favourite memory of Elite? This is easy for me:

On very rare occasions, a game has made me so scared, that I have actually got vertigo (you know, the feeling you get when you look over the top of a skyscraper, that tingling in your feet and balls when you realise that all you have to do, is lean a little more, and you're finished).

This is where Elite comes in. Frontier Elite II, leaving Ross 154, I accidentally hit the time fast forward button instead of hyperspace, and in the split second it took me to realise and press the correct button to go back to normal time, I was a nat's from the gas giant. The gas giant was filling up my entire 14" cathode ray monitor which was massive, and I could feel my ship getting caught in the gravity well. I really felt I was so dangerously close to this gas giant that I was about to be torn apart. My feet tingled so much I thought half my capillaries we're going to burst... Awesome...

And it was 5am, I was 14 years old and I had school in three hours. I had lost my night to Frontier... Here is a picture of the very box my game came in, signed by the man himself at the ED Launch Party :)

My favourite moment was landing manually on a planet on Frontier Elite II. It took me ages and I only did it once but it was an accomplishment none the less. :D

Getting the lenzlock code right after loading the game forever on a zxspectrum in my early teens. I've been addicted to Elite for decades! Does the Commander Jameson hack still work? Lol. Thank you Frontier.

I remember I got a "message" from a Major concerning the THEFT of an experimental craft.. (new technology, weapons and such) and I accepted the contract. (Military contract, that is...) As I remember, nothing happened for quite awhile in the game...(Elite) and I had all but forgotten about that contract when SUDDENLY this ship that I could NOT identify was barreling DIRECTLY toward me lasers blasting away!!! I did a half-roll, slowed and punched back up to FULL POWER, (an old Immelman maneuver). and was on HIS tail. blasting away with my forward Military Lasers.... which to my surprise had virtually NO EFFECT... (not even THARGOID ships had THAT MUCH invincibility against my Military Lasers....)

We did the "Dance of Death" alone... out in the BLACK....Toe to toe. until my Hull was nearly GONE.... THEN I released the BOMB!! and Hyperspace Jumped to the nearest system... where I received over 100,000 CR for "dispatching" that craft.... (Yep it was the STOLEN experimental craft....) It NEARLY cost me my life, BUT I came out of it 100,000 CR richer.... (Oh back in those days i was DEADLY!} Never did manage to make ELITE though..... (Computer gave out. first).... Now, I'm just a simple "Trader". on Elite Dangerous.... See you in the BLACK Commanders!!

My favourite moment in Elite Dangerous was when I met CMDR Braben in battle in Princess Aisling's area. At the time I was working for her and building my points rapidly so that I could buy my beloved cargo ship.

Unfortunately, the encounter was all too brief.

Favourite memory was in the original Elite in 1985 and getting the docking computer for the first time, listening to Blue Danube and not struggling to get through the station mail slot

Favourite memory, difficult cause there still getting made... I'll say the time I found a guardian structure, the idea of another ancient race with much more advanced technology, and the idea that we are combining ours with theres excites me more, to wonder what they make. CMDR Kottr Warlord

CMDR NewGAME

It's always hard to determine wich thing you should pick weather it is the first thargoid kill after a long strugle after trying over and over or a simple rebuy Screen with Starship One but well i'll go for a Exploration one.

Eventhough this one is really recent(not even half a year ago) i'll go with it. I've set out on a new Exploration trip to the most southern edge of the Galaxy since i wanted to ... well stay away till the bugs of the last patch were fixed. Along the way i found several awesome planets my first biological surface sites and so on. Shortly before i arrived at my final destination a rather new CMDR i knew mesaged me to help him out with the new mining system and well as i got closer to my final destination it dawned on me that since he doesn't put much time into the game i could show him the southern Edge. So i decided to invite him onto my Ship. Continuing from there we where just a few jumps away from the souther edge, the abyss, the pure black ... I could litturly read his excitment as we were just one jump away from our final destination. On arrival in the System i open the Map and was dissapointed at first, since there wasn't a landable Planet to show him what true darkness means, so i decided to fly him to the nearby Waterworld and as i scrolled through the Nav-Panel there it was ... a Stellar Phenomenon ... To be true, i first thought that it might be a Tourist Beacon but it turned out to be sth. quite unique. Once we dropped out there was this giant wall of spinning objects reflecting the sun with their fragile arms and behind them, the abyss, nothing but darkness. At first we just set there just staring at it and wondering what those things are but soon curiosity succeeded and we started to take pictures and fly all kinds of crazy maneuvers around those things. Me with my Anaconda and him with the Fighter i alway take with me for scouting and well as you can image it was just amazing. Further forward this Experience hooked me onto Exploration for a wile. I continued my journey to Colonia, the western Edge, Salomés Reach and finally Sag A* befor heading back home.

For those who are curious what this Phenomenon was: - Spoiler -

On ZX Spectrum successfully entering the correct code from the Lenslok sheet to play Elite and then spending many hours flying between Leesti, Lave and Zaonce trying to build up money

Cmdr Pittam

CMDR name: cmdr Muiterij

Getting killed by trying to dock into the station on the first system.
So after a few dock tries (around 30 times) jumped to another system and died again to that station.

But I kept on trying for days, until after a week I finally worked the docking out/
After that the game got easier :)

The first time i successfully landed on a planet blew my mind. Up until then i hadn't felt fully immersed, but I suddenly realised the size and scope of the game. Astonishing.

So many favourite memories, can't pick just one. :)

-Managing to dock several times in a row in the original (well, C64 version) - didn't realise how easy it really is until got to see the Docking Computer in action (mercy, I was 10 years old back then :D)
-Constrictor hunt (C64). I wrote all the messages and hints shown in game to paper, an managed to destroy the scoundrel after a long fight.
-Following random NPCs (C64), skimming the suns for fuel and watching a real life total Lunar eclipse through my room's window in the meantime.
-Managing to configure my sister's 386SX to run FE2, and with sound at that successfully (needed some Autoexec.bat & Config.sys twiddling to get enough free base RAM to run the game with SoundBlaster & mouse drivers and EMM386 runnig for the EMS it needed).
-Doing all the hand coded missions in FFE. Jade's FFE site was an invaluable resource, printed many pages at UNI computer room.
-Finding Oolite, it's fantastic community and succumbing to the dark side (=modding), there's something very satisfying when you see your own creations in the game and when they finally behave as expected, getting some scripting done about right.
-Starting E: D first alpha, configuring my joystick mimicking my Oolite setup & finding myself right at home in the helm of my Sidey
-Fantasticon 2014, meeting lots of great people gathered there because of E: D. The enthusiasm, blissful ignorance of what was to come.
-Getting rescued by a Fuel Rat when fuel transfer was a new thing.
-Visiting all stars of the Orionis constellation. Some needed jumponium - back then engineering wasn't a thing, and jumponium mats needed to be collected one by one (yes, one drop gave you one unit, not three like now), blind (yes, you didn't know what materials were on a particular body until you collected enough to have an educated quess).
-Hutton Mug CG. For the mug!
-Several rares CGs, fetching rares from stations & donating them to someone to take to the destination, occasionally being the designated carrier. Was fun & relaxing.
-Guardian Ruins.

Hi cmdr G-VI here ! Sooo many memories to pick from but i think the fist time i put on the oculus i was so blown away ... also seeing npcs with random names and names from sifi shows like red dwarf but i think the most memorable was my first thargoid hyperdiction i was like what awesome....

Cmdr: Dutchman141
Platform: Xbox One

My most memorable moment was when I got my Cobra mk3 in Elite Dangerous.
I remembered that ship so well from back in 1984.
I had to have that ship and when I could afford it I felt like the king of the hill.
Still own that Cobra and will never get rid of it.

We were a wing of 4 friends in Maia when thargoids were just launching. I'd say the First week they came up, since no ax weapons were there, and I was driving a cobra mk3 by the way. It was really hard to beat, costing many many rebuys. At last, the final blow was hit and we all 4 saw our first thargoid death, leaving us amazed and gazing the while thing. It's still today that I see one go down and I remember that night.

CMDR Tormund of Tarth signing out.
