CG predictions...

Weapon doesn't work and ends up disabling no enemy thargoid ship (as hinted by the previous time - weapon fired in 3 systems and no thargoid wreckage found). This will obviously completely ruin Salvation/Azimuth from this status of superpower-trusted entity...

Thargoids scale up their level with something like capital ships and end up overwhelming the area showing a superweapon of their own.

Thargoids see such a massive display of guardian tech they hate so much and stop playing around just disabling stations - they now go down on foot on planet surfaces to attack ports/settlements. Settlements can be destroyed for good if the AX effort fails, so as time goes on that 300K+ (iirc) settlement figure may substantially reduce. Hopefully to be later restored with actual organic settlement building happening within the BGS (not player owned/private enterprises) :giggle:

I would love to see a non-lethal/diplomatic route appear, but I doubt it will appear, at least for now.

With the announcement that the Azimuth Saga concludes with the release of Update 13 on Tuesday ... predictions for what happens next?
I have a laundry list of things that would be great to happen next... but precedent suggests that they won't happen.

For me, one of the more rational outcomes is that the weapon works... but Salvation has vastly under-estimated the scale of Thargoid presence in the galaxy... and only succeeds in wiping out those around the Pleiades. The weapon is using the Thargoid Structures to aid transmission... they are only present around the Pleiades (or at least, that's all the unknown signals lead to)

We know thargoid territory is marked with Barnacles... which means California, Witch Head and Coalsack are still on the cards, being quite distant and not with any structures nearby... if they would even be within range.

Meanwhile, we know Cone Sector is a hotbed of Thargoids, and locked due to this. Unless that was just convenient and has since been retconned, there's also that.

This would be the prime time to flush out the Pleiades and pull down the curtain on the sectors around Barnard's loop... revealing a much greater presence. Edging into the "unprecedented" space... would be the prefect time to drop in:
  • some new Thargoid surface features.
  • maybe a new Thargoid enemy type or two
  • maybe new Thargoid items
  • lift the AX weapon limit in light of new threats, but also nerf some of the bounty payouts now they're "easier".

Wishful thinking on a lot of fronts, but would be neat

Edit: like the above post, would be the time to reveal Thargoid capitals, which the weapon simply isn't tuned for.

  • Salvation Weapon 'works'
  • In-Game Cutscene showing firing and plugging footgoids (and hiveships?) 'coming soon' (p14?)
  • Thargoids reduced back to their regular nebulae (i.e. little change, though Galnet will pretend it has changed as it has before)
  • Basic CGs until p14 to keep things ticking over now the hype machine has been primed - superpower aftermaths etc

Anything more would be a bonus :)

I think the final phase of the battle will take place on the surface of the planet where superweapon is located, introducing new kind of AX CZ, which would be like AX version of Odyssey on-foot CZ, but against Xenos, with Horizon players able to participate in ships and SRVs if they're using 4.0 version.
In the end superweapon works to some extent, at least destroying many Thargoids swarming the system. After the battle Thargoid offensive ends, they retreat home and Azimuth is able to gather enough of their salvage to continue work on Thargoid technology, like Project Seraph, maybe even introducing some kind of new ship based on Thargoid tech.
Thanks to their after battle research, Azimuth is able to identify and find a way to enter some previously unreachable Thargoid systems, where we can find Thargoid inhabited bases that we can pay a friendly visit to.

If it's anything else, I don't want to hear about it :p

In the latest galnet news Engineer Ram admits his rival CG to salvation was a failure in that it did not give enough info to allow reverse engineering of the P wave... this means the powers had set up 3 research bases that were doomed to fail and a waste of money...

The Empirical: “Ram Tah has published theoretical papers on the Guardian technology derived from the Proteus experiments. However, he admits that full comprehension of the superweapon’s construction requires scientific data held exclusively by Salvation.”

Aka he had the 3 powers waste a ton of money when he never had the info needed to start with...
Well the data Wycherley claims he has.

A ground AX CZ would be fun. If it happens though, I hope the on foot Thargoids are big enough that the gun on the Scorpion srv can hit them without wasteing half its ammo load. About the size of a Beluga seems right.

My idea that we'll get ground AX CZs is based on the fact that there are two Unknown structures on permit locked Hip 22460 10 B that have "xeno hunting" as associated activities. It might be nothing, but I like to think it might be a clue.
Even without walking Thargoids (it just might be CZ with Thargoid ships attacking ground installations) it would be something new.
If after months of building up to this finale that coincides with another update and Fdev telling us how with this story finale they're trying something never done in Elite before, we're going to get some station rescue CG or something like that, It will be rather anticlimactic to say the least.

Indeed, given the apparent dependency on Update 13 to finish the arc, and the statement that the 4.0 client will be needed to fully participate in what comes next, I'm also leaning towards introduction of AX ground combat. However, my guess is that the superweapon doesn't fire.

Salvation talks about Thargoids like they're mindless bugs, but the rest of their storyline doesn't really support that. Territorial, yes, but certainly intelligent. Their behavior in the last three incursions suggests learning to avoid the superweapon pulse, perhaps even intentionally probing to learn when and why the pulse happens. So I think they're on to Salvation's game.

Moreover, "conclusion of the Azimuth saga" sounds pretty final. Since we don't think FDev are going to delete all AX play, and it sounds like Salvation won't be trying again... that sounds like it doesn't work out well for the man formerly known as Wycherley. I think he's headed for "formerly known as alive" status.

So my wild speculation about how this ends is, the Thargoids realize they can't break through in space to attack the superweapon. So in the final hours they decide to assault the base on foot. Or maybe send a signal that wakes up the Thargoid shock troops that have been hibernating under every Thargoid surface site for eons. Either way, the superweapon and all the staff on site meet a gristly end. Going forward the Thargoid war escalates since now they believe we're allied with the their ancient enemies, and their sites will go from their current extremely safe condition to extremely dangerous due to the presence of Thargoid ground forces. Which forces the storyline will encourage us to fight, because the superpowers still need meta-alloys.

IFF (If and only If) Thargoids are out of game after 'The Event' Wed or Thurs, then we would not need any SAW AX weapons, so what is the deal with CG SAW rewards - doesn't interest me.
I did scrape a few 100's tissue samples from them (which everyone said was broken BTW) which are now on my FC, but as for combat, they wiped me out in seconds, so gave up on that!

Plasmas have a travel speed of over 6KM a second they are virtually an absolute damage rail gun and people have been able to use them instead of thermal rails has been demoed very well in Human CZ as secondary fixed aim weapons...

Also salvation has in past given brand new salvation augmented weapons to the tech broker with zero notice and guardian weapons do exist as Large versions in the files not just Medium... you can buy Large Guardian shot guns... but travel time of projectiles is stupidly slow on non SAW builds...
If we do as told Large may release and for human CZ that would be the first ever Large rail gun and it would do absolute damage not thermal to human ships all those resitance boosters to the hull would mean nothing...

Azimuth Claims ‘Thargoid Doomsday’ Imminent

AZIMUTH CLAIMS ‘THARGOID DOOMSDAY’ IMMINENT

08 AUG 3308
Pilots’ Federation ALERT

Salvation’s anti-xeno superweapon is now complete and final preparations are underway in the HIP 22460 system.
Commodore Morag Halloran, Azimuth Biotech’s military coordinator, broadcast this announcement from the Bright Sentinel megaship:
“Salvation has confirmed that the Proteus Wave core mechanism is fully active. Calibration inside the Thargoid structure on the surface of HIP 22460 10b has successfully concluded. Power sources derived from Guardian designs are building to the required levels, and a final series of safety checks are currently underway.”

“Upon detonation, the energy pulse generated by the Proteus Wave will cause catastrophic disruption to all Thargoid biomechanical technology within range. Every alien vessel in HIP 22460 will immediately cease to function. Salvation predicts that the wide-ranging impact of the superweapon will drive all Thargoids out of the core systems. In practical terms, tomorrow will be their doomsday.”

“This is the culmination of years of research, coupled with Salvation’s revolutionary technology. The project could not have been realised without the military support of the Alliance, Empire and Federation. Azimuth is also grateful to those pilots who delivered vital materials and risked their lives to hold back the Thargoid fleet. Take pride in the knowledge that your courage and dedication will help bring an end to the Second Thargoid War.”

The superpowers’ anti-xeno taskforces have sent out urgent calls for emergency support to prevent Thargoid forces from attacking the Proteus Wave site in these critical final hours.

Ok, did I dream it or was it sold as “all Thargoids everywhere”? Now it is “only in system” and “in practical terms”?
"Only in system" was supposed not to matter because it would lure all the Thargoids to that system before it fired ... or almost all, at least, which would give "in practical terms".

I mean, admittedly, if 6 capital ships, a modified freighter, and a couple of carriers plus independent AX squadrons can hold off "all the Thargoids" in the local area for any significant length of time in the first place that does suggest that there weren't that many of them around to start with and we probably didn't need a superweapon to deal with their sporadic raids.

Sometime a few weeks ago: Tharg the Mighty issues the order: “Send a small advance force to the system, make them think their plan is working.”

Thursday 09:00 IGT: Proteus Wave fires

Thursday 09:10 IGT: Tharg the Mighty smiles with frosty malevolence. “Showtime.”
