chatting in VR

Hi
I love to play in VR. I also like random chit chats meeting other Cmdrs. Unfortunately I need to take the Vive off my head to look at the keyboard.
How do you handle that? Is there maybe a way with Voice Attack typing for you?

For me, I move my wireless keyboard to my lap, and use the touch typing class I took 30 years ago. (Edit: not very helpful, I know)

My chief difficulty has always been noticing that someone has messaged me. I was always poor at this when playing on a monitor. Now that I have a whole cockpit with windows to look at, the tiny chat screen is even easier to ignore.

All the ships have a radio. Why are ppl so against actually speaking to each other?

Not everybody here is a native English speaker. Reading/typing a foreign language is usually much easier than listening/speaking, especially when people are speaking with accents and with distracting noise and gameplay around.

Besides, nothing breaks immersion more than a badass elite pirate with a voice of a 12 year old.

I have a speech impediment. I really hate it when strangers make assumptions about me IRL, I don't want that problem following into games as well. This growing trend towards voice comms is destroying what was once a refuge for me. :(

WSell, I have trouble typing.

Hello Commanders.
I made 15 macros in 'voice attack' (VA) for the most common things I say. This is easy to set up using the 'record' feature in VA.
This enables a single spoken word to input a whole sentence in the comms panel (i.e. 'hi' = hello there commander, 'oops' = please don't kill me! I'm throttling down now). Good for initiating contact of diffusing a tense situation. I can then lift my cv1 if I need to type anything more specific to the situation I'm in.

I did take part in the 'beta blowout' just before 2.2 went live and used 'teamspeak' for the first time. What a great experience that was. I agree that as every ship has voice comms capability I should be making more effort to use it, but with VA, music and/or radio also coming through my headset - this might be a bit tricky/confusing for listeners during voicecomms.

I always thought it would be amazing if FD developed speech-to-text utility for their chat. In this way you wouldn't need keyboard in VR, and people could still be discreet and disguise their voice for one reason or another.
