Cheers FDev, You might not be perfect but you....

When I watched the Dev streams for the Beta and the lads were always going on about "It's a FREE update" I didn't really think much of it TBH, mostly because I had bought Horizons so the "FREE" thing was not in my current mental vocabulary.
But...
I've been watching the launches of things like Battlefield V and Fallout 76 and anything to do with EA and... Diablo "Don't you have smart phones" Blizzard and it made me think...

Sometimes we (the CMNDs) want to grab FDev buy the metaphorical throat and ring it like Big Ben...but this update (I spent quite a few hours in Beta) is, in my honest opinion, a HUGE step forward, and, even with the controversial, infinite probes situation; something that the base players who don't care for PvP and high level engineering and Thargoids and all that comes with that can still get more out of Elite Dangerous than they had before (the new system scanning system is loads better if you are not just a "Honk 'n' Go" type person and, if you are, then I implore you to please give it a chance; it's not IMUUUUSHUNNN breaking to hear the real sounds of the universe).

Anyway I digress (because of brandy), everything we are getting is really, and truly free.

Most of us on the forums have Horizons but we forget about the many thousands of casual players that might not, and they don't have to pay for this or a paint job, or a laser colour or anything like that to enjoy this new update.

I would love to murder in cold blood the person that had the idea of making all the new mining upgrades needing a ship with 95,000 hard points, but at the end of the day I'll not tell you Elite is DOOMED because the rest of the update I love.

And it's free.

So...Thanks FDev for not following the trend of "Pay to even have a chance to play, let alone win" type games that are beginning to saturate the current market.

To All you lovely buggers...

Nicely put.

ED is the only game I play and it is great that it is still being supported (and developed!) by Frontier rather than left to wither in favour of new shinies.

I love that I'm still excited by a four year old game :D

I may not like the odd thing here and there about the game but having waited a very long time (and given up hope) for Elite 4 to materialize all I can say is thank you Mr Braben and FDev you are doing a stellar job.

Hurry up with the space legs already.

I don't really agree with the slightly violent undertone ( ;) ) but this is a nice message regardless.
+1.

I've loved it, I've hated it, I've complained and retracted my complaints and then complained again but I'll let my 2500 hours in game do the speaking. I've never ever played a game for that many hours. FDev has done alright by me and continues to do so.

My only real complaint is that you need to make it available on the Xbox Japan storefront. Please!!!!!! Yes, I'm a console peasant.

I think "Beyond" was FD's investment into the future of the game.
They recognized several items that needed fixing/improving.
It was not just in our interest, but in their's too, with regard to lay the foundations for future expansions to sell well.
But yes, kudos to them for doing that.
They could also have given into temptation and just churn out one mediocre DLC after the other, just for the quick buck....they didn't.
"Beyond", in essence, is a patch. A huge patch at that, but a patch nonetheless.
And i don't expect to pay for patches, though give it 10 more years and we'll have lowered our bars so far that even that will have become acceptable.

First game since Counter Strike, Bad Company 2 and Rocket League I've put over 500 hours into! Elite goes into my top 5 most played games at just over 900 hours on Steam and about 300 through client before I added it to my account.

Though if you consider the whole Elite series from Elite II and First Encounters I reckon I'm on well over 5000 hours put into Braben games since the 90s. I literally played nothing but Elite II when I got my first PC built by big brother in 1994. Even clocked some hours on his Amiga before that!

I totally agree plus it would of been really hard to sell a qol update for stuff thats been ignored for many years.

Agreed. There's a lot of criticism of FDEV, some of it warranted, but still. The year that is Beyond is a nice thing they did.

One thing I have to give FDev credit for is that there's a variety of things they could, obviously, do to squeeze more cash out of players but they seem to adopt a more principled business model instead.

That's something that I'll always respect them for... and it was the only thing that led to me choosing to buy JWE when I wanted a "casual" game, instead of any of the alternatives on the market.
So, doing the right thing does have it's rewards. :)

Most of my criticism is (I hope) resreved for things where it seems like they've had the choice of doing something I'd like or something I don't like and they have a habit of going with the choices I don't like. [sad]
I try to avoid criticising them for stuff that they simply haven't discussed at all (space-legs, atmo' landings, carriers, DLC etc) cos it's apparent they are doing other stuff instead.

Totaly this.

Because of Fdev's integrity regarding monetary practices I don't mind it at all to spend money in the store for vanity items.
ED is the best game I play (a lot) and it's only getting better and better.
Yeah there are some things that I'm not to happy about but how could this not be in a game with so much in it.
Fdev has shown me wrong regarding my expectations for 3.3 and I'm happy to admit that, ED will remain my most favorite game for a very long time.

Frontier guys, you're doing an awesome job, I thank you for that!

Cheers FDev, You might not be perfect but you....

all use BIC razors?

Wait.. this isn't a complete the line game? doh.

Does anyone remember games where basic customisation was just part of the game? Like, changing your ship colour from red, to blue was just a thing? without a store for it?

Maybe I just made that up.

I also remember waiting 8 and a half minutes to load a game with an unreliable tape recorder so times do, inevitably, change.

Sometimes for the better...

Anyway, careful about praising less bad things, in the face of very bad things.

You normalise less bad.

I feel you Sir, I really do, and I will always call things when I see them (as I did with what your sig. shows, and massive respect to you for keeping on side with that situation) but at the end of the day what we are getting right now with ED is better and better these days, even with the odd teeth grinder. After all, you wouldn't have been so passionate about something you didn't care about.

Exactly, I like how so far Frontier has stayed principled and currently "old-fashioned" with their business practices. Not straying into lootboxes, enabling a greymarket or rmt, or perennial pre-order shenanigans. As for kickstarter promises, they just listed hopeful stretch goals and still stuck to getting a game out after reaching the funding goal and ending LEP and other deals. I hope they never deviate like the other publishers if they grow bigger in the future.
