Cheers FDev, You might not be perfect but you....

One thing I have to give FDev credit for is that there's a variety of things they could, obviously, do to squeeze more cash out of players but they seem to adopt a more principled business model instead.

That's something that I'll always respect them for... and it was the only thing that led to me choosing to buy JWE when I wanted a "casual" game, instead of any of the alternatives on the market.
So, doing the right thing does have it's rewards. :)

Most of my criticism is (I hope) resreved for things where it seems like they've had the choice of doing something I'd like or something I don't like and they have a habit of going with the choices I don't like. [sad]
I try to avoid criticising them for stuff that they simply haven't discussed at all (space-legs, atmo' landings, carriers, DLC etc) cos it's apparent they are doing other stuff instead.

I can't agree. Their model effectively makes this one of the few very expensive games in existence if you effectively wish to change the default look of every ship you own in the game.

Most games give some basic cosmetics or means of customising their appearances. Elite Dangerous asks you to pay money for Avatar content, ship parts and paints and novelties. And these ain't cheap asking prices overall.

The fact these are all behind a pay wall is the problem. There should be at least basics available for free. 8 default colours etc.

Last night I was bounty hunting in a CG in a wing with 3 guys I had never met before, just chatting about the game, things that were coming up, strategies on builds, plans for what to do when the update drops - it was great fun.

ED has many design elements that make it a truly awesome experience. It is a fact that FDEV does care about its product and its customers. Work on updates like this proves the point.

If I had to chose between picking basic colors for free or Beyond for free I'd know which woud be the better deal...

Yeah basic colors for the win baby!!!!!

Heh just kiding.
I've bought a substantial amount of store items but I like them and no one forces me to buy them, neither are they needed to play the game in all it's aspects.
I'll never do that in again in a game that exploits gamers in order to be able to gain some decent progress like World of Tanks or a bunch of EA games for that matter.

I don't mind ED's business model at all and as long Fdev keeps ED as great as it is I don't mind supporting them with my credit card and get some nice paints.

So Fdev, where's the Krait Phantom ship kit hmmm? :D

So many of these updates have been something to look forward to and be excited for, which for a game I’ve been playing since 2015 is impressive. This is easily one of the best content improvements I’ve seen in a long time. FDev has only made it harder to focus on real-world responsibilities and pull myself away from my cockpit :D thank you everyone for the hard work, it really paid off

Hang on, this doesn't seem right! Am I still in Dangerous Discussion? ;)

Seriously though, nice OP.

Yeah, what's happening here, we'll be telling Tj not to worry as it wasn't his fault next!!

Seriously also thanks to all at FDEV for 3.3, I'm looking forward to getting out into the big black after an extended break.

Frontier are company which needs to make money in order to fund support and development - that cannot change.

The usual model is to make players pay for updates, which if you will/can not pay locks you out of the game. Here FD have chosen to make mods payware. That means it is completely and utterly optional if all you want to do is play the game. The other benefit is that the barrier to entry is very low - 3GBP or so - which means you can spend as much or as little as you want, rather than have to fork out 50 quid for an update we're obligated to buy.[cool]

I for one will be buying some mods as a "Thank You" to FD for making me excited all over again about playing Elite. Although my wife is less happy about the situation...[big grin]

Does anyone remember games where basic customisation was just part of the game? Like, changing your ship colour from red, to blue was just a thing? without a store for it?

Maybe I just made that up.

Was that the time when you didn't just get the stuff 100 people worked on for an entire year without further charge?
