Chieftain Size and perhaps other specs

I'm sadly going to have to disagree on the ship size for the Chieftain, especially with the image of the cockpit showing three seats. Even with the image posted in the OP, you're looking into the cockpit from an upper left angle, with the seat highlighted as number two actually being the back right seat. My guess will be Chief will be large, while the upcoming Krait will be medium.

In the end, I suppose we'll find out in a couple weeks regardless :D

The image with the three seats is a concept paint up. Whereas in the video of the actual chieftain in game there's no indication of a third seat

I like how it could be relatively much smaller. Then it looks more like a version of a dropship/bigger dbx, for the alliance or the interplanetary shuttle.

Roughly scaling from the video the pilot width (8-9 mm equivalent to around 500 mm actual size) puts the forward wingspan in the 35 - 40m region thoughts?

Subjectively from the video it doesn't look much larger than AxpX. I hope i am wrong, because there are enough maneuverable medium ships (FAS). A maneuverable large ship, that would be very cool!

The concept paint up seems to be largely unchanged from what we say in the trailer. Not quite sure why they would suddenly change it from three to two. Again, we'll find out in a couple weeks... but I'm seriously hoping it's a large. I'm pretty tired of medium ships with less than stellar firepower.

I just had a thought about the SLF. What if the rear of the ship opened up instead of the usual way the SLF docks

Could that be a SLF bay door on the back. Looks like it has a massive door there. May not be big enough though.

  1. Looks like a twin seater from the video, which is not bad if you want a friend to teleport over.
  2. The size does feel small, although the depth of field is just playing tricks.
  3. Cockpit glass offers a good 180 degree left to right view and about 120 degree view top to bottom. The cockpit reinforcement bars are a little thick, so I'm guessing the inside is going to feel somewhat like the Diamondback Explorer. Would be fun to explore in given the view.
  4. Aesthetically it's a good looking ship.
  5. Seems more combat focused. Perhaps a direct upgrade for the Diamondback Explorer. Likely not a good multi-role ship like the Python. I'm guessing cargo space likely to be offset for increased combat role.
  6. Price range, I'm guessing 25 - 30 million to compete with faction ships like the Clipper and Federal dropships. Speed of the clipper, but not the cargo capacity. Combat oriented like the Fed dropships, but not as many guns or armor. Sort of that mix between the two.

I'm actually looking for the opposite: a medium ship with SLF capacity and three seats. I don't mind if the ships firepower is in line with other medium ships (and thus a bit below the FGS), if it can field two SLFs and still has acceptable agility.

If I have to be honest, that ship was the only thing, togheter with the new rendered planets, which draw my attention when showed at the Expo.

Very beautifull shape.

I would expect the speed to top out at upper 300's... Close to 400 or just over. Very maneuverable ships tend to be a little bit slow, but not bad. As for the fighter bay, I highly doubt it. We'll see.

Looking forward to this.

Im personally hoping that it has a capable jump range after Modifications... 45-55ly would be fantastic... Nice to see more than just DBX, AspX, and Conda out at Exploration meetups.

If everybody got their wish for this ship it would be way overpowered... Very maneuverable, very fast, fighters, large hardpoints, huge jump range... The nerf bat would be very cruel to this ship if it were so...

I'm just hoping the engine sounds aren't stolen from a pink pony... No rehash of the Dolphin/Asp. Make it sound like it means business!

Agreed. If the Chieftain has a jump range (in explorer trim) comparable to the Anaconda/DBX/Asp X, then say hello to my new exploration ship!!!

I'm guessing it won't though. I've a hunch it will be a fast and maneuverable combat ship with average jump range and very low cargo capacity. Because the game needs more combat ships.

An interesting looking ship, I'll certainly be eager to check it out. I'd welcome a jump range above 20LY, too.

I'm considering abandoning/selling my FGS Anti-Thargoid build. It's jump range is only like 11LY, it's taken me 4 play sessions of outfitting and I still don't have the shields and power plant up to spec. I've still got to move the ship like 400LY between 2 more Engineers, then 300LY out to the Pleiades. There's a dang lot of jumps (over 200 jumps, if I counted correctly) and I just am not feeling the commitment to do it.

With the prospect of the new open-beta, I thought I'd check in and see if there was any consensus about how the Chieftain might turn out yet.

Personally, I'm kind of hoping/expecting that it'll turn out to be an alternative to the Python whereas the Krait might turn out to be an alternative to the FdL.

Which, in itself, is a bit of a paradox given that the Python and FdL are both medium-pad ships with broadly similar combat capabilities.
Course, the Python and the FdL "feel" massively different to fly and I wonder if they'll manage to achieve that again with the Chieftain vs the Krait?

Donar ships, the Python did a lot of dirty drive tuning... And when you can't, strip it down and fly with what you need.
