Chieftain Size and perhaps other specs

Why couldn't it just be 2 large and 4 medium? Hell, I'd take 2 large and 3 medium. But no, FD has a hard-on for sticking small hardpoints on everything. The only way this thing would even be worthwhile would be if you can stick a fighter in it. Just another underpowered medium in a stack of mediums. I suppose I'm still stuck to the grind to the Vette.

It depends, if the C1's are tightly clustered it may work well with a group of rails.

I love the hardpoints as described. 2 large MCs, 1 medium feedback railgun and 3 small long range pulse or beam depending on efficiency and agility. I like the sound of that.

Cobra Mk 4 is the mini-Python. The Krait will be a blend of Keelback and Cobra Mk 3, so a low end medium ship.

Looking at the grey box renders, I suspect it will be on the larger side of medium, probably just barely fitting into the landing pad. Remember, it has three separate cockpits. On the other hand, I expect the chieftain to be on the small side of medium (cockpit looks about as wide as a Viper's) with the pontoons making up most of its width.

And if the smalls are underneath, dumbfire rockets or mines. Ripple fire :)

Personally I can't wait for all the endless hot takes on how the tiny distro (or powerplant) it'll have, suddenly makes it amazing, right after all these snazzy weapon combos are rendered entirely irrelevant and folks experience whiplash changing their position.

Type-10 says hello, by the way. ;)

I am hopeful. Really. But I am also realistic. It's Frontier; this thing will have some sort of 'edgy and exciting' compromise that makes the entire conversation a bit humorous. They always do.

Size 3 distributor, with a size 5 power plant :p

Corrosive is best on large or huge, because of their lower ROF the ammo reduction makes them drain about the same time as a normal medium.

You can mitigate that by making the rest autoloaders. Then they deplete about at the same time. Works fine on my FDL with 3 autoloaders and 1 corrosive. The bigger slots are the main damage dealers, with less or no size penalty against hull. Small hardpoints are definitely utility hardpoints.

and we are talking about wishfull thinking of the playerbase here.
it wont have enough utility slots to fit as many shield boosters as some seem "necessary"
it wont have enough internal slots ot fit as many SCBs for the same reason
it wont have big enough internals to fit an instant-refuel scoop for those who want to go exploring in a warship

Something is ALWAYS totally wrong.

for me - i hope it has a big enough distro and enough heat efficiency to use an imperial hammer in that medium slot - simply because ships with a single central medium slot are rare (imp. eagle and courier?)

Funny really, the T-10 was predominantly dismissed in the forums with pessimistic comments .... and had no comments about it from FD (if I remember correctly) ..... and the result was (mostly) a good surprise.

The Chieftain, however, appears to have gone the opposite route .... very optimistic hype, some encouraged by FD .... Let's hope few will be disappointed ! :)

Seems like sensible management of expectations. If you are hoping for something amazing you're likely to be disappointed that it's not as good as you hoped. If you are expecting it to be rubbish you might be pleasantly surprised it's not as bad as you feared.

A lot of the 'disappointed' threads I read could be mitigated with better expectation management - the release date of the Q1 updates is a good example. Expect something on 1st January & you're going to be disappointed, expect nothing 'till 31st March & you'll be happy with an earlier date.

So - now we know:

the two large are on top, the 3 smalls form a triangle around them, the medium one is under the nose

4 utility like most ships of that size,

2xC5; 1xC4; 2xC2; 3xC4 military internals

class 6 power distributor

375 unmodded boost speed with A-Rated thruster but empty military slots and just C1 limpets in the C2 slots.

no SLF

Now it's up to the combat connoisseurs to tell me why my HP placements are wrong:

- 2 large fixed MCs/APAs
- 3 fixed beams/Hammers
- 1 Seeker/Packhound/Torp/Grommie

because hammers are class2. you mean regular small rails?

So engineered, it will have a FSD jump range of around 30 ish, and a boost speed of about 500 ? (oh wow !)
it was not a full loadout in mass,
and the jumprange was still up to beta balance changes

It'll land at 22-25 ly at best with a weapon loadout.
30+ plausible as an explorer if they don't change it much.

Surprised by the loadout, it outclasses the FAS and I think it'll replace it for most thanks to the weapon placement.
Poor Feds, can't ever seem to get a break.

I'm mostly interested in an "upgrade" of sorts from my fully combat loaded Vulture explorer ship, The Ronin. The Chieftain seems to be shaping up rather nicely toward that end.

The problem is that with only five general purpose internal slots you don't have enough room for even a basic explorer without leaving something at home.

You need at least six free bays.
AFS
DSS
AFMU
Shield
Scoop
SRV

Or eight if you want hull repair limpets.
