Newcomer / Intro Clear save?

What exactly does 'Clear save' do? Will my commander be deleted so I can start fresh with a new name perhaps?
Or is it for something else?

Also, is there a way to hide the "Eliteangerous 1.0.0.0" text from the bottom left corner of the screen? I don't need to see it all the time..
