Cmdr "soft" reset

Been thinking about this for a while and may just do it once I reach triple Elite.

The idea is rather than wiping your save, to reduce your total assets to zero again, to make things a bit more focused and interesting for a while.

Benefit is keeping engineers access, Tech broker gear and ranks.

Main issue is losing several highly engineered ships (including all the big ones), which means I couldn't quickly jump into my Vette or Cutter if I felt the urge. But otoh it might make me try out ships I haven't flown before (right now I'm just rotating between the ships in my current fleet of about 20, with little experimentation in terms of applying roles and outfitting).

Anyone done this before, and if so how did you find the experience?

If you're on PC just buy a second Cmdr when it's on sale.
I've reset my third Cmdr a number of times and will be doing it again to get the latest new Cmdr experience.
I'm heavily invested via store items which are non transferable between accounts, if FD would allow that I would do it in a heartbeat.

Building up faction rep and your rank is the main economic wall you're climbing in the game, so losing all the credits won't affect you much. IMO it is a total wipe (preferably a new CMDR) or nothing.
Yeah to be fair I'd make millions quickly, it's more the idea of not having the luxury of 20 ready to go ships and over a billion in credits which makes my gameplay a bit... aimless is maybe the best way to describe it.

Also I wouldn't just lose credits but my ships, including lots of G5'd modules.

I understand that. I've never been much into buying the extras from the store so that doesn't affect me.
The most I've bought is some spikes and corrosive paint for Alice's Cobra III.

I have to admit that going through the engineering "hoops" again is a real pain with doing clear-saves. I do clear-saves from time to time (like to keep insurance claims=0) and it is rather tedious to have to do it all over again. I don't know if a "reset all stats but leave my Engineers alone" is viable (or desirable) though.

I transfered my PS4 save (was close to triple Elite and pretty much every engineers unlocked) to PC 2 months ago. A little bit more radical than a soft reset.

Slowly unlocking engineers again, messing around with 3-4 ships, doing Ram Tha mission again to get lot of Guardian data, going on short exploration trip...love the "fresh start" vibe...even more with the better graphics than PS4 (playing in 4k with head tracking on a 80" wallscreen - amazing).

Still got a lot of engineers work and want to take a look at the Interstellar Initiative so it should keep me busy for a few months.

I did a halfway 'new start' a few months back by moving to Colonia for a number of weeks.

While making do with limited ships and outfitting was an interesting enough challenge, I soon missed my A rated ships I left in the bubble. That's sort of the only thing that's holding me back really - in fact I also unlocked many PP toys so not sure how I'd feel about getting rid of those. The waiting game getting those was a real drag, and while I'm not valuing all of them, prismatics, pack hounds and pacifiers in particular I definitely do, but those alone would take 3 months (!) to regain.

Gotta say, I didn't find unlocking the engineers too bad with my alt-account.
The main thing that'd prevent me from doing a proper save-wipe, though, is the thought of unlocking the fed/imp ships again.

For the OP, if you haven't unlocked the engineers in Colonia yet, or pinned ther blueprints... or you just fancy a trip to Colonia... how about heading out there and transferring all your ships out there?

Do that and it'll burn through a big heap of credits.
If you've got any left, buy cargo and dump it.
With that done, head back to the bubble with empty pockets and you won't have enough to transfer your ships back from Colonia again.

+EDIT+

Also, I should say, when I started my alt-account I found the whole "newness" thing didn't really last very long.
It only takes a week or so before you're back on your feet.
If you're thinking of doing something drastic just to get the buzz you got when you first started playing ED, it probably won't be as much fun, for as long, as it was first time around.

Accounts are cheap. I'm triple elite on main, elite elite dangerous on # 2, and elite pioneer competent on #3. It must be some loss aversion psychology thing where I cant let go of my progress on one account, but I do enjoy leveling. Evil but effective business strategy for one commander per account. Ugh.

The bit in bold is something that I'm most concerned about. And that's what happened to me in Colonia, I liked it for a bit but then flying C/D rated Pythons went stale FAST.

And like you, the Imp/Fed grind was the worst and I did this a while back before Rep+++++++ missions were a thing, it was soul destroying.

I didn't find the engineers too bad because more often than not I already achieved their requirements naturally (such as the 5k ly - went to Sag A* pre-engineers). There were two where I got really annoyed (the Brommelite one - didn't realise you need a permit beforehand so had to dump 50t which took me ages to accumulate pre 3.3, and Fujin tea was a chore due to low supply) but again with the knowledge I have now I'd be much more organised and efficient.

The Colonia idea isn't half bad. I unlocked and maxed all engineers already, including those in Colonia and including pinning some of their recipes. But rather than removing all ships (self destruct and Freewinder would be the quickest for those, credits I could burn through quickly by A-rating several Cutters) I could just 'park' them in Colonia. Funnily enough when I was there a few months ago, I didn't even have enough credits to ship my Vette there - 1.3bn credits, let alone the rest. Food for thought though.

As I said, if FD would allow sharing of store items between accounts (or maybe just provide multiple save games, I never thought I'd say that but in Elite's case I'd actually pay money for such a basic function) I'd much prefer that as I could try out the noob systems a bit, too.

Having spent several hundreds of Euros on store items, creating a new account where I'd either have to pay for those again (lol) or just fly vanilla ships wouldn't work for me.
