Cobra Mk V and more...

Less than 300m/s? My Type 8 is built for cargo and has a top speed (4 pips to ENG) of 307m/s and a boost of 521m/s.
Empty? Sure.

But if it's built for cargo, why's it empty? How fast is it with cargo in it?

I'll give you a hint -- it's less than 300 m/s.

They're too good. I love them, but they are. They handle more smoothly. They have fewer heat issues. They do more of your flying for you. To be fair the same difference exists IRL between a new car and a design from an earlier decade, especially if a substantial breakthrough in technology has been made in the intervening years. Driving a '68 Ford pickup is a more real driving experience than driving a '24 Subaru Outback. If you love the former, the latter will leave you feeling empty.
After reading your and the others' posts on ship handling and characteristics, it can't be those because I didn't really give them a fair chance - all I did was buy a hull, A rate them and take them for a spin for a few minutes. Ok, the T8 I used for a couple of cargo runs, too.

So I think it must be the models, combined with the fact the cockpits are recycled. With the T8 I also got the impression that it's borrowed its landing gear from the T9. Proportions seem off, and in the case of the P2 given the internals I feel the ship body is too large. And the T8 looks like a Lego set - I just can't unsee it - those useless front struts don't help with that either.

The Mandalay looks like a sailplane that's swallowed a dumpster. Haven't obviously gotten the chance to try it in game but the visuals put me off completely, and the messed up thrusters put the final nail in the coffin for me.

The Cobra 5 is right down my alley though, especially given they designed a new cockpit for it - why they didn't bother for the others no idea. Just feels like low effort to me (C5 being the exception). Won't buy it out of principle but am actually looking forward to try it ... Next year.

Yeah, I feel fairly confident the T8 cockpit interior is a reskinned krait cockpit model. Compared to the exact duplication of the original Python cockpit (which I've always hated) into the Python Mk II, though, it's an improvement. The Mandalay--looks nothing like an explorer should look, and the wings are annoying when doing exobiology, but it's just too good at what it does to hate it, and it has unreasonable potential in other jobs as well. If it had large hardpoints, it would be the new Krait--the jack of all trades, arguable master of them too. It's like a medium Anaconda, only it flies better than it looks (instead of the other way around).

omg THANKYOU. This made me laugh so hard. Lego set is stuck in my brain now. I actually quite like the look of the Mandalay, but not enough to give Frontier money for it. I still haven't forgiven them for throwing VR on the scrap pile with the Odyssey shambles. I'll wait till it goes general release next year.

The Cobra though.... I just looked at that model and said "Yes!" I can't wait to try that ship out.

It's a well known trope in sci-fi novels that when a merchant ship gets in real trouble, the captain dumps cargo to run faster or to take a longer life saving jump. We have infinite lives and low insurance costs in ED so no commander I know even considers that option. Pity.

A new small ship for the collection is great but FDev can you please consider:

  • Small seismic charges please?
  • A dedicated mining ship maybe?
  • Make LTD laser mining great again?
  • Balance hotspots so we actually get the intended resource?

In short: buff mining!

T8 cockpit is that of the T7 I believe, and the Mandalay's is from the Mamba (which an afterthought small crotch window added).

Given that we spend 99% of our time when flying a ship looking at the cockpit, I just feel that not designing new ones for these ships was a mistake, especially as they are/were sold for real money. They clearly had artists available for the hulls, so why not spend some extra time for the interiors? Just comes across as low effort to make a quick buck.

Cobra V surely makes Cobra IV look like a sad mistake. Better firepower, fastest of all Cobras, highest jump range and best internals of all of them, on cherry of top being SCO compatible.

That being said, Cobra IV was always kind of "trophy" of sort, with very rarely being used by anyone, as even at its relase, was already underpreforming, mainly beause of its extreme slow speed, wich causes most of ships outrun it with ease. Wich is main issue with mk. IV... surely it would be more popular, if it would boost to atleast 500-510 m/s, and hardly it would make it overpowered in any way.

But it does not make much sense to compare old ships to new ones... new ships supposed to be better than older ones in virtually every area, and Mk. V does that perfectly.

That's the thing, the boost of the MK IV is lacking. Cruise speed engineered is 300 for mine, which isn't that much less than the MK V.
Exactly. AFAIK, it hasn't been nerfed.
Not nerfed, but totally superseded by the almost godlike MK V.
