So its essentially a better MK 4 with zoomy Mk 3 bits.

And...and those ship kits. I make drunk pancakes more shapely...

The ship itself looks pretty decent, but yeah the ship kits... it's like they don't even try anymore. Just plop some random Wordart shapes on the ship model in each corner (and don't forget the obligatory wing - because space ships need downforce, duh!) and that'll do.

I'm still a little disappointed that it's a medium pad ship, too. As if we didn't already have enough of those.

Small pad ship, just caught up on the thread and the above Mk4 comment makes more sense now hehe. Wondering to what extent that late change will cause scaling issues (Cutter stairs anyone?) with the final version.

Ship is bigger, have more weapon slots, almost the same Optionals as Mk4 but same trusters as Mk3. So, what do you think? Of course it will be slow and heavy on turns

If think this logic doesn't fit with ASP Explorer and Mandalay for an example... so I am to sure, even if logic says it should be obvious.

Its the front canard wings that set me off.

For me it's those but also those winglets... there's no design flow at all (imo)

Horses for courses and all that, which isn't to say that I disagree that much with your take lol. However, the good thing is that we can mix and match, the back wing tips work well enough. I think the idea of kit bashing using various kits is the way to go, though of course, the Arx prices can limit the desire to get a kit for only one piece, but that's what sales are for, I guess.

They basically did what I was saying all along they'll do if they're smart - make a Mk V, as a Mk IV with good SCO envelope. A twist or two on the internals, but basically this is it: a better Mk IV, available to all.

It remains to be seen will it be more agile than the clumsy Mk IV, something closer to the nippy Mk III. That would be nice. And the cockpit view in Mk 5 looks spectacular!

I'm not sure about the role it would have in my gameplay now, but I will surely fork out on December 10th.

And that class 5 GFB will mean you can only have a size 4 scoop or vice versa.

Which works perfectly well for the Dolphin. Scoop size = FSD size is an ok combination, unlike the DBX with a size 5 FSD and a size 4 scoop.

Any words on the thermal handling? More like a Hauler or more like a Dolphin? The advantage of the Mk.V over the Dolpin could be the amount and size of internals (for exploration), SCO and the cockpit view, disadvantage would probably be speed, perhaps agility and most likely thermal handling and single jump range.

I think it needs just 1 more Utility slot to actually be a jack of all trades, maybe at the cost of the 1 class 1 optional.

Honestly, I'm a bit disappointed. I can already see that the Cobra Mk5 will have the same issue as the Mk4. Both are heavier than the Mk3, yet they have size 4 thrusters. Because of this, the ship will be sluggish and slow. My fully engineered Cobra Mk4 flies at about 270 m/s without boost and ~430 m/s with boost, which is far from sufficient for a small combat ship. It can easily be outrun by the Type-8 and the Python Mk2 (the latter achieves truly incredible speeds).

It’s clear that the Mk4 and Mk5 thrusters need to be upgraded to size 5 right away; otherwise, the ship will end up being underwhelming.

Improve Cobra Mk IV

Since there are new technological discovery in game and Cobra Mk V on the horizon. I've suggest improve prev ship a little bit. I like to fly small and medium ships but when i see that Type 8 more maneuverable and faster (~531 vs ~440 - lol) then small fighter ship - that looks weird to me...

One of the reasons I was happy when it was initially announced as a medium ship. They are the most versatile class and I was hoping we’d get a nice new fast multirole with the new FSD.

It was quite a letdown today, but at least this will likely become the go to Odyssey mission runner unless they really gimp it in some significant way. Slow speed, like you said, would probably be a deal-breaker.

The mass and thruster size more or less define how the thing will handle. It is very likely to be mk4 slow (or slower). Frontier leaning hard into "multi-role" suggests they want the Mk5 to basically be the generally available version of the Mk4 (just with slightly better class 5 internal).

If it was a medium, then there's more wriggle room for mass vs thruster vs fsd. As it is now, Frontier has to break it's own self-imposed rules to have it be mk 3 fast.

So we get a nice new cobra that looks great (ship kit aside) probably sounds great, but may be relatively slow and potentially lethargic (I do hope it has strong lateral thrusters as that would at least make it maneuverable).

Mandalay is sprightly because it's a medium, just very light with class 5 thrusters and nice strong lateral. The Mk 5 is likely slower, less maneuverable and will (due to FSD and mass ratio) have a jump range that's low by comparison.

But that's what people here asked for by repeatedly asking for it to be small, I guess. Be careful what you ask for, and all that.

But if you compare modules of Asp X and Mandalay for an example you will see that this isn't the best way to predict the hull mass. And even more... just compare hull mas of cobra mk IV and Mandalay and put 4A trhursters for both... and then compare the speed...

You're ignoring the ship size. Asp X is medium. Mandalay is medium. A very light medium can go fast (mass vs thruster). A very light small can go fast.

That's asking a lot for a heavy small ship. If it was a medium (frontier could have cheated by having the dimensions be just above the small pad size) then there would have been so much more potential.

Believe me, my friend, I really want it to go fast. I want it to be Mandalay levels of handling. Go fast, do crimes. But here we are.

Since it will start out an Arx ship, it should still be decent. But I am a little sad it's a small. A light, fast medium cobra was a heck of an offering.

Please, STOP with small and medium ships, there are a lot of them, we need more big ships with good firepower already, the big three + Type10 have been alone for too long.

My Mandalay is a great ship but I'm as excited about this one as I was for the Mandalay. This ship is a beauty and I really like the flight deck (aka bridge).
After buying ^^ my long range exploration ship, I hope I have enough Arx to buy the CobraV on day one. Are there any guesses on the Arx price ? Or has it been announced ?

The Cobra Mk Iv is a lead brick, but it has proven itself useful as a Planetary Pirate 60t, Trader 72t, CZ Outpost--mine bombing and missile boat.
If the Cobra Mk 5 handles similar, or better, it will be a good ship.
