Cobra Mk V and more...

Ok, let's try this a little differently. New roles ? No. But Type 8 now putd a dedicated cargo ship at the top spot for medium pad cargo, as multiroles just should not be the best at anything by FDEV's own definition. The Python MK I was. Python MK II was an attempt to break up a meta named FdL, it didn't quite succeed at that.
Yeah sure. I am not denying the new ships are well placed. But that was one of the central point of all the heated debates: New ships don't bring anything new to the table, they can only rehash and do better what's already in the game.

And in that respect. SCO optimization is what makes them truly unique. If that's something one cares about is a whole other topic.

With SCO optimisation, Cobra V will become the best exobiology ship. :)

But when will Farseer start SCO-tuning other ships?

Hmm. I would not mind it being quicker than Mk III. Maybe it will be quick. I hope so. Being a small ship, the only thing giving it any survival odds is go-fast.

But we don't know if the vid shows a stock ship, engineered or what. We're gonna have to wait till December.

Curious if that was stock or not. I think 270 m/s with 2 pips and a 4E thruster would be really significant. Mamba is about 280 with 2 pips and the stock drive so either that’s not stock or it’s a very pleasant surprise.

Really curious to see what the engine profile is like.

;)

And what will be the superiority of this ship ?
  • P2 - large number of cannons.
  • T8 - large amount of cargo for an average ship.
  • Mandalay - The biggest jump for a medium ship.

What about this one?

Why it should be always superiority. Istn't an alternative for Cobra Mk IV enough?

I will set up mine for exploration regardless. That cockpit is too good not to. And the Mandalay will be bubble and mission runner.

I think about opposite idea. CV as a bubble ship for everything (wakes, HGE mateirals, collecting powerplay escape pods, collecting missions for wing transport, on-foot missions, some mission with silen running)

Shhhh.... don't say it loud, because my Mandy would be upset :D

It looks like C mk5 will outclass in terms of modules remaining small ships which in my opinion should be updated as well by giving them another internal slot - that happened in past, but never say never. In my opinion new Cobra wont be as fast like C mk3, the older ship will keep this advantage over the new one. But generally the new Cobra is pretty much like Cobra mk4 in many ways, so many of us asking for mk4 - including myself will be satisfied.

I definitely don't follow the "what is it's meta use?" line of questioning. Quite often the answer to "why should I do it x way?" is "why not?". We've got approximately 40 ships in the game. The reason for that is variety, not for each one to have a specific niche. While some are objectively better at certain things than others, it doesn't mean they're the only option. Logical? Yes. Mandatory? Not at all, and I have subjectively more fun flying oddball ships than perfected metas.

At the end of the day, it's a new ship, that in itself is enough of an excuse for me to buy it and try it out in different roles. If I subjectively like it in a certain role (even if there's another ship objectively better), it'll stay in my regular fleet, if I don't, it'll got mothballed at my home surface port. The fun will be in the experimentation, and that's worth the price of entry for me.

I am puzzled as to where this will leave the Mk IV. So far it appears that the Mk V is equal or better than the Mk IV in every aspect. At least the Mk III is faster.

Exactly this what Koma Pahu said:
It leaves it in the hangers of those who were lucky enough to get one 🤷‍♂️

Mk V is better than Mk IV in every aspect.
Slots wise, better.
In handling, there's no way it will be slower or clumsier than Mk IV. It even might be nippy as Mk III (or somewhere close)
View is superior, one of the best in the game.

So indeed, Mk IV stays in the hangar of the few who were there at the time, and forked out when FD offered that deal. A sweet memory of the long gone days, but under the tarpaulin forever. It was a fine base raider for me, but now waaay behind the competition.

If I've been doing my sums correctly, the MkIV has an extra internal. Total cargo will be more with the MkV, but more build flexibility with the Mk IV.
(And of course we still don't really know the speed, manoeuvrability, jump range, etc. though I expect the MkV will at least not be embarrassing on those fronts.)

The Cobra Mk V can fit a class 5 prismatic shield, could make it the tankiest of the Cobras with relation to shields.

Both have 10 opionals

The mkIV is a unicorn. A special gift to the backers. Just like naming stations or systems. It doesn't excel in any capability and I think that my flight time in the MkIV is less than 10 hours because it is so meh.
I hope that the mkV is closer to the mkIII's capabilities.

There are settlements with a good commodity profit margins which will not accept large ships but will allow the T8 with it's 300-400+ cargo capacity to land. For PP 2.0 Powers with merit bonuses for sales profits > 40% that's significant.

Cobra should be small as a tradition :)
It is still the very fist ship in Elite, so it is a part of history.
That convince me to the Cobra V, and now I realized that I always had a problem with doing bubble things, because I always feel like every ship I build for that is not enough. Now I feel like I have something fits exavtly what I need. Did some paper-plans for outfits, and looks very nice. Operation Multi-Limpet Controler without giving up anything else is really nice for a small ship.

The Cobra Mk 5 would be great if there was sufficient reason to ever step back inside a small ship once you've got easy access to medium and large ships (and the money that goes with them). As it stands, I honestly don't think I'll bother picking this up. There's literally nothing for me beyond novelty and nostalgia.

It would be wonderful if you could expand the gameplay to give some....ANY advantage to small ships:
  • Small asteroid starports
  • Cheaper fleet carriers with small landing pads
  • Megaships or structures with internal spaces only accessible with small ships
  • Missions where the client gives you a fake ship transponder and requests only small ship fulfilment
  • Allow our small ships to perform SRV or on-foot hot drops like Frontline Solutions
Hell, incorporate this into the bubble expansion gameplay!! Let small landing pad outposts be part of some bootstrapping procedure on the way to medium and large pad facilities. Give us a reason to step back into the Sidewinder and drink in those engine sounds again, I beg you.
