CODEX - Discoveries - I don't get it, could someone explain the data I'm seeing

I understand the concept of the CODEX, but I'm not understanding the data it's showing me.

Firstly, when I look at star discoveries I see a grid of different types of star. With a …, i and a tick symbol, each with a number next to it (mainly 0's)
What does …, i and tick mean?

Secondly, it seems some stars have a low non zero number next to the i (1 to 5). And when I click the star is shows me random cmdrs names against a few stars.
My confusion here is that a) I have no clue who these cmdrs are and b) why is the number only 1 to 5...If I count up all the stars "discovered" it comes to maybe 20-30.. WAY WAY more stars would have been discovered in the last 18 hrs. Due to this I am not 100% sure what data I'm actually looking at.

I don't really understand it either, and i think it's pretty non-intuitive as to what data is displayed, how it is collected (and selected) and why none of my prior discoveries seem to be included.

Yes, i know FDev has gone on record stating that it was never inteded to migrate earlier discovery data into the codex, but i feel kind of ripped off for all the neutron stars and terraformables i've discovered. And no, i don't beleive the "it's impossible to do so"-angle they are driving either. The database entries exist. Just lookup up the name and the discovered bodies and migrate them to the codex.

Per sector, per "type"

1st number: Rumors
2nd number: Total reports by commanders
3rd number: the total confirmations by yourself.

Things you've confirmed are blue, things reported orange.. there's no rumors so not sure about that.

So, it's not a count of the stars discovered, but of the types (M class for example are M class and Giant M Class)

Ok, i get it this far.

But lets say in about 2 months I want to check back what I discovered 5 weeks earlier, how can I find that?

I dont think you can, you can only see bodies you scanned that were remarkable in one of the properties. So you can select 'sector [x]->planetary bodies->non-atmo rocky bodies->terraformable and you'll get a list of the largest/coldest/whatever terraformable non-atmo rocky bodies in that sector. Any find of that type that wasnt remarkable in any of the recorded variables is not there. So it stores a max of +-15 planets per type per sector. I think...
