Mission
The Colonia Core Circuit Expedition is an expedition departing from Jaques Station, traversing 33,000 light years to Sagittarius A*, and returning to Jaques Station. Along the way we shall see many of the beautiful sights in the Colonia Nebula area, the root of the near 3 kiloparsec arm, and the galactic bar itself. The timing of this expedition is arranged so that we shall rendezvous with the Galactic Nebula Expedition at Sagittarius A*, making history in two ways: First, the Colonia Core Circuit Expedition is the first fleet expedition to neither start, end, nor pass through the bubble. It is also the first fleet expedition to rendezvous with another major expedition in deep space.

Background
3302 has been an interesting year for explorers. While there have been private and semi-public expeditions in the past, 3302 marked the first truly large scale public expedition, Distant Worlds. This historic expedition introduced over a thousand explorers to the pleasures of long distance travel as part of a fleet. Since then, a number of public expeditions have sprung up, making 3302 the beginning of the Age of Expeditions. Explorers, normally a solitary lot, began to work together to a degree which had not been seen before.

It is exactly this new mindset which contributed to the overwhelming response to the loss and subsequent rediscovery of Jaques Station. Hundreds of pilots made the 22,000 light year trip, first to bring desperately needed supplies to the station and later to help establish the first truly extra-bubble outpost and society, the Colonia Citizen's Network. As part of the CCN Exploration Wing, I have watched as CCN pilots have surveyed points of interest for many thousands of light years around the station, contributing valuable data to the Galactic Mapping Project, and making the Colonia Nebula area a first rate destination for explorers.

Waypoints
Waypoint 1: Departure from Jaques Station
KJehItDl.png

We begin at Jaques Station, in Eol Prou RS-T d3-94. Our path is a twisted string leading into the galactic core, up to the roof of the galaxy, and back to our starting point. In a month we will cover nearly 33,000 light years, and make history both as the first major expedition that neither starts, ends, nor passes through the bubble, as well as the first to rendezvous with another expedition in deep space. Along the way we will see many stunning sights, set down on some historically significant planets, and count coup on the supermassive black hole at the center of the galaxy. Fuel your ship, charge your FSD, we depart!

Star System: Eol Prou RS-T d3-94

Distance to next waypoint : 3,300 LYs

Waypoint 2: Jaques Station to the Simmic Kyloaln Nebula
EgNhZGZ.png

Leaving Jaques Station, we head coreward to our first destination, the Simmic Kyloaln Nebula. This dramatic nebula is a supernova remnant expanding out from an embedded black hole. The view from within the nebula is stunning, with threads of glowing red gas mingling with darker areas through which the stars can be seen.

Star System: Kyloaln GR-W e1-5394

Approx. distance traveled : 3,300 LYs
Distance to next waypoint : 3,000 LYs

Waypoint 3: The Blue Lilies Nebula
IrNCaSP.png

The name of this small nebula centered on a neutron star has a double meaning: it partly represents the appearance of the nebula, resembling a pair of blue lilies, and partly gives notice to two nearby Earth-like Worlds, one of which is in the closest system to this. **DUMBAA PS-R C18-2660 6** is just 1.28 LY from the nebula and has a sky with spectacular blue and green colors. **DUMBAA PS-R C18-1220 B1** is 13.5 LY away and sees the nebula as a blue flower in a sky and white with the many stars of the Galactic Core - and the B3 planet is an Ammonia World, so other forms of life can also share in the view. Within the nebula itself the sky is an eerie green color.

Base Camp Designation : Slocum's Cove

Star System: Dumbaa XJ-R e4-5596
Planet/Moon : 4 A
Base Camp Surface Coordinates : -6.9 / -156.45
Surface Gravity : 0.16

NEW BASE CAMP FOR THIS WAYPOINT
Because of a bug that causes commanders to occasionally crash when entering a neutron star system, and because some of those crashes result in the commander logging back into the game in the jet of the neutron star (with ship destruction the typical result), the base camp for this waypoint has been moved to a neighboring system. Frontier Developments is aware of the issue, and they are recommending that commanders avoid neutron star systems until they release an update for this.

Base Camp Designation : Lovell Canyon

Star System: Dumbaa PS-R c18-2660
Planet/Moon : 10 A
Base Camp Surface Coordinates : 44.53 / 4.91
Surface Gravity : 0.04

Approx. distance traveled : 6,400 LYs
Distance to next waypoint : 4,600 LYs

Waypoint 4: The Great Annihilator
w46UAch.jpg

The Great Annihilator is a system containing two black holes. Great Annihilator A compresses approximately 198 solar masses within 0.0008 solar radii and Great Annihilator B contains about 66 solar masses within 0.003 solar radii. The black holes have five stars orbiting them.

The Great Annihilator is one of the brightest gamma-ray sources found in the Milky Way Galaxy. It produces massive amounts of pairs of photons at 511 keV, which usually indicates the annihilation of an electron-positron pair (thus, the name). The Great Annihilator also has a radio source counterpart which emits jets that are about three light years long. These jets are probably synchrotron emissions from positron-electron pairs streaming out at high velocities from the source of antimatter.

Star System: Great Annihilator

Approx. distance traveled : 11,000 LYs
Distance to next waypoint : 1,000 LYs

Waypoint 5: Athaip Wisteria Nebula
3otVVnW.jpg

One of the Distant Worlds waypoints, this blue coloured ejecta cloud nebula surrounding a black hole sits toward the southern edge of the galactic core regions. The nebula itself has no planets to land on but a visit to the system is worth it just to see the gravitational effects on the blue glowing ejecta cloud. Our base camp is in a neighboring system.

Base Camp Designation : "Mt. Hillary"

Star System : Athaip CR-C B55-4
Planet/Moon : 2 C
Base Camp Surface Coordinates : -15.82 / -72.29
Surface Gravity : 0.12

Approx. distance traveled : 12,000 LYs
Distance to next waypoint : 3,000 LYs

Waypoint 6: The Amethyst Cloud
pveqc37.jpg

Another Distant Worlds waypoint, this is one of several close proximity stellar remnant ejecta nebula within the Myriesly Sector. The Amethyst Cloud being one of the most colorful. We're less that 600 LYs from Sagittarius A* now so our stay at this nebula will be brief as we prepare for the galactic core gathering.

Base Camp Designation : "Tereshkova's Ridge"

Star System : Myriesly EC-B c27-381
Planet/Moon : AB 3 B

Waypoint 7: Sagittarius A*
fKFDqTl.jpg

KEY EVENT - FLEET RENDEZVOUS WITH THE GALACTIC NEBULA EXPEDITION AT THE GALACTIC CORE

Here we visit Sagittarius A* - the famous supermassive blackhole at the centre of the galaxy. The closest star systems are less than a light year away and it is at one of them where our core base camp is situated - an ideal staging post to prepare for the exploration of the Milky Way's heart. We will be making an extended stay at this Distant Worlds basecamp as we make our rendezvous with the Galactic Nebula Expedition. A trip to the roof of the galactic core awaits after this!

Base Camp Designation : "Armstrong Landing"

Planet/Moon : 1 B
Base Camp Surface Coordinates : 57.25 / 78.06
Surface Gravity : 0.08

Approx. distance traveled : 15,600 LYs
Distance to next waypoint : 2,000 LYs

Waypoint 8: Altum Sagittarii
fPKuEnv.jpg

For our final Distant Worlds waypoint, we're heading to the roof of the galaxy, some 2,000 LYs directly above Sag-A*. From our base camp vantage point we get a spectacular view of the expansive galactic core regions below us. An awe-inspiring site that only a few have witnessed first hand. For larger FSD-ranged ships with J3 Jumponium, an optional excursion to Altum Sagittarii "Prime" is available for those who have the time. Sagittarii "Prime" is situated a further 870 LYs above our designated base camp system!

Note: While most of the route is accessible to low jump range ships, Altum Sagittarii requires at least a 33 ly jump range, or a great deal of Jumponium. Low jump range ships are encouraged to skip this optional waypoint.

Base Camp Designation : "Gagarin's Reach"

Star System : Nyuena JS-B D342
Planet/Moon : 4 F A
Base Camp Surface Coordinates : -66.88 / -96.00
Surface Gravity : 0.06

Approx. distance traveled : 17,600 LYs
Distance to next waypoint : 3,000 LYs

Waypoint 9: Inky Nebula
Screenshot pending

Leaving the galactic center, we're now making our way back towards Jaques Station. Our first stop is the 'North' Zunuae Nebula. Nicknamed the "Inky Nebula", Zunuae is a small purple nebula situated on the near edge of the galactic bar.

Star System: Zunuae HL-Y e6903

Approx. distance traveled : 20,600 LYs
Distance to next waypoint : 3,000 LYs

Waypoint 10: Copycat Nebula
TrMNabP.jpg

This blue planetary nebula, produced by a newly formed neutron star, looks very much like its neighboring nebula. Two blue glowing orbs of dust and heavy elements engulf a nearby k-class star, and a few systems in the area.

Star System: Phroi Flyuae MN-S e4-4719

Approx. distance traveled : 23,600 LYs
Distance to next waypoint : 2,6000 LYs

Waypoint 11: Aegel
hGgJgV7.jpg

We've left the core behind and are making our way back through the western neutron fields. Passing through the gap between the galactic bar and the near 3 kiloparsec arm, we come across Aegel. A beautiful blue planetary nebula surrounding a neutron star, commanders should exercise caution jumping into this system.

Star System: Wepae XE-Q E5-236

Approx. distance traveled : 26,200 LYs
Distance to next waypoint : 2,600 LYs

Waypoint 12: La vie en Rose
6oCAHLh.jpg

Near the root of the Norma Arm, we come across another stunning planetary nebula. La Vie en rose is a beautiful nebula, blue from the outside but shining pink inside, expanding from a central neutron star.

Base Camp Designation : To be named (contest!)

Star System: Screakou EW-N e6-5997
Planet/Moon : 2 a
Base Camp Surface Coordinates : -37.30 / -145.45

Approx. distance traveled : 28,800 LYs
Distance to next waypoint : 1,800 LYs

Waypoint 13: Céimnithe Nebula
uQCrYVc.jpg

Our final deep space waypoint of the expedition, this planetary nebula located 2813.36 ly from Jaques on the way to the Galactic Core. Its dual blue orbs radiate out from its central Neutron star which is joined by three other stars (one A and two K class) each of the four featuring its own solar system totaling at 50 objects in the system (asteroid belts included).

The view inside the nebula is awe inspiring. Every shade of blue and purple color the entire galaxy from here, making the vacuum of space feel like the comforting waves of the ocean.

Star System: Kyloarph DV-Y e4134

Distance to next waypoint : 2,800 LYs

Waypoint 14: Expedition conclusion, Jaques station redoux

The expedition ends where it began, at Jaques Station in Eol Prou RS-T d3-94. In the month we have been out, we have seen many beautiful sights, visited some locations of historical significance, counted coup on the galactic core, and made history ourselves. Never before has a major expedition been conducted that did not start, end, or pass through the bubble. Never before has a major expedition rendezvoused with another expedition in deep space.

If you are in a low jump range ship, please read this!
Altum Sagittarii, the Shipslayer
(It's actually not that bad)

As the departure date for C3E draws closer, I wanted to say something about Altum Sagittarii. This is the optional waypoint 2000 light years "up" from Sagittarius A*, and the reason why I've been recommending a 34 LY ship for the trip. The roster, so far, includes a number of ships with a shorter jump range than that, including some with extremely low jump ranges. I've been recommending to everyone who's bringing a low jump range ship that they skip this waypoint, but everyone I've spoken to insists that they want to make it. I can understand that, but anyone trying to reach this waypoint in a low jump range ship needs to understand the dangers involved.

We're traveling in the core bulge, so stars are thick until we reach the end of the bulge, at which point they rapidly start thinning out, continuing to do so all the way to Altum Sagittarii. What this means is that you'll spend most of the trip traveling normally, and then your options will start to decrease until you need to start using jump boosts. Your use of jump boosts will increase as you get closer, with most of your boost usage at the very tail end of the trip. It will be very tempting to press on, hoping to replenish your jump boosts at the waypoint, but there is no guarantee you'll be able to do so. There is a "green" system, Altum Sagittarii Prime, where you can prospect for all jump boost materials, but it's 500 light years further "up", and 800 light years total away from Altum Sagittarii, making it a rough proposition to reach. This is all exacerbated by the upcoming neutron star boosts. Neutron stars are plentiful in the core, so it would be easy to use them to boost up towards Altum Sagittarii, but they are rare in the area of Altum Sagittarii itself, making it very easy to trap yourself there.

Please, if you insist on attempting to reach Altum Sagittarii in a low range ship, practice solid fuel, routing and jump boost discipline. Reserve one jump boost for every neutron star boost you use, as well as enough boosts to get back down into the core region, plus a margin of error. This is a 33 kly trip through some of the most beautiful sights the galaxy has to offer. Don't risk the trip and your ship by getting caught in an unrecoverable area. If you're short on fuel, a fuel rat might be able to save you. If you're stuck with insufficient jump boosts, you may simply be unable to continue. The route to Altum Sagittarii can be a hairy one, and you'll be tired and tempted to press on beyond your limits. Don't do this. In addition, if you're in a low range ship, don't plot a route directly back from Altum Sagittarii to the next waypoint. You'll spend too much time traveling through the upper reaches of the galaxy. Instead, head directly back down until you reenter the galactic core. If you're running EDDiscovery or some other app that keeps track of your route, use this to backtrack your route precisely. This is the only way you'll be able to know for sure that your jump boosts will last for the trip back down from Altum Sagittarii.

My apologies if this is getting tedious. It is a deceptively hairy area of the galaxy, and I really don't want to have to leave anyone behind because they've gotten themselves in an unrecoverable situation.

FAQ

  • What sort of ship should I bring?
    • The expedition is primarily a core expedition, which means that jump range doesn't matter so much. The one exception is Altum Sagittarii, which requires a ship with at least a 33 ly jump range. Jumponium can be substituted, but a great deal will be required. Ships with lower jump ranges can skip this waypoint.
  • How fast must I travel?
    • The C3E is a sprint expedition, covering over 33,000 light years in under 2 months, including about a week total in basecamp layovers. While the rate of travel varies during the expedition, you should be comfortable putting in 8,000 light year weeks for this expedition.
  • That's too fast!
    • Part of the reason this pacing was chosen was because of the rapid travel CCN explorers are used to, and part of it was to provide an alternative pacing to the GNE, which is traveling about half as fast. The GNE does depart Jaques Station on 29 Oct, arriving at Sagittarius A* on 26 November. You're welcome to depart with them and follow either our route or theirs, meeting with us in the core for the trip back.

Many thanks to Erimus for permission to use Distant Worlds waypoints and screenshots, Qohen Leth for the logo, S. O'brien for scouting waypoints, the FGE, the CCN in general and the Exploration Wing for inspiration, and the exploration community as a whole for being awesome!

Flagship
You can't be a real expedition without a fleet flagship, it seems, and the C3E is no different. In light of our dual status as both one of the smallest expeditions (by roster) while also being one of the most hardcore (as evidenced by the fact that you have to travel 22,000 light years just to get to the start of the expedition), I have chosen the flagship of the Colonia Core Circuit Expedition to be:

The Lyra
sm0LltQl.png

Piloted by CMDR Kit Ausland, another of the Outlander Challenge pilots who flew a Sidewinder from the bubble to Jaques Station with a fresh save, the Lyra replaces CMDR Mira Hart's Nova. The Nova is currently in drydock at Jaques with a terrible case of space mange, and CMDR Hart has switched to her Asp Explorer, Pancakes.

If you see CMDR Ausland, please say hello!

Details about the GNE meetup

I am pleased to announce details of the Galactic Nebula Expedition meetup when we reach Sagittarius A*!

DATE: 26th November 3302
MEETUP TIME: 1800 UTC - 0 (1800 Gametime)

We will be meeting up with the fleet of the GNE in OPEN play. This will be a fantastic opportunity to meet up with other explorers, as well as being a historic moment, as this will be the first deep space rendezvous of two fleet expeditions. Our aim is to get as many explorers into one instance as possible for a GIANT group photo. Please keep an eye on the forums for more updates as we go.

See the Galactic Nebula Expedition thread for more details about that expedition.

The base camps for the two expeditions are less than 3 light years apart, and we're slated to be at our basecamp for 3 days, so I'd like to encourage everyone to visit both basecamps, meet up with your fellow explorers, and have a good time in the galactic core.

Note on private groups: The recommended private group for the C3E is Fleetcomm, while the GNE is primarily using the EDEX private group. Both private groups are open to new explorers, so I would recommend that all C3E pilots apply to the EDEX private group (Private Group: atomicb0mb639) to make ad hoc meetups easier.

Here are the details of the two basecamps:

Can we have more decals for expeditions? Pretty please with cream on top? I'd even fork out money for them!

I'll be probably signing up but I have yet to decide what ship I'll be taking. I'm currently test driving the AspX and I have to say while I do like the ship it has one very large drawback: the Cobra looks way cooler in screenshots in my opinion XD

So I'll probably see later this weekend (fairly close to the bubble) what jumprange I can get out of it with the application of some engineering.

You could also have a look at the Diamondback Explorer. AspX is still better but maybe you prefer the look of it - "style over substance" is something I like to go with, too ;)

Looking good while crossing the galaxy is what it's all about

My current budget for a ship which I can crash comfortably into a few planets without bankrupting myself is about 25 million, so I should have some options :)

Sorry, maybe I missed it, but when does this expedition depart? I'm heading to Jacques after I offload a few more trips in the Colonia Connection CG

It's pretty easy to get an exploration Cobra with a 25 ly jump range, even retaining a hangar and full-sized shields, which means you should easily be able to get 37 light years or more from a high-roll grade 5 FSD. I'd say it would be trivial to get something with a range of over 33 light years, which could take you all the way to Beagle Point without any jump boosts at all.

It departs November 6th from Jaques.

I visited Sag A* from Jaques to scan some data for the Exploration CG not long ago, but had to "buckyball" it to guarantee returning before the finish. What a waste!

Now I can go in style, cruise around a bit and look out the window of Drof O'Ednom, my trusty 18ly Python.

This should be fun and there must be somewhere to do some Xmas shopping on route?

Surely all my family want framed screenshots of nebula this Christmas?

Perfect - sign me up!

It is indeed, because I just achieved that range with a grade 4 upgrade ... but since I have now grade 5 available I'll gather some more mats and will push it ;)

Anyways, I just signed up o7 (I'm Karras on the Xbox in case you are wondering)

Can I sign up for this, will be my first group outing. On the Xbox, have joined the Discord group for CCN. Anything else I need to do?

Edit: Just signed up :D

I'm still currently out on the Sagittarius-Carina Mission, somewhere between Waypoints 8 and 9, but I'm thinking that I might make the trip between 9 and 10 a...tad longer. I'm thinking I'll meet up with you guys at Great Annihilator and travel with you to at least Sag A*.

At the very least, it'll be a test of my speed running capacity.

See you there!
