Colonisation - new feature, and I love it!

Yeah they have already stated you will be able to place existing assets, so no flexibilityy in the design at all as far as I can see.

We don't know what asset mean. It could mean whole base or buidlings. Probably whole bases, but still we aren't sure yet.

That's your pessimistic take. While many will not return, there's comments on YouTube of retired players saying they would. ED needs more old and new players to support current and future development.

TBH, Elite needs new players more than old players. Every company needs more clients rather than old clients to grow. This year I feel like 20/80% effort for old/new players.

Forget about the old players it's new players Fdev need to buy the game and see the arx cost as "normal" . Old players have bought the game won't be buying as much arx and still have other thoughts on what Elite should have been ( I started my journey on spectrum )!
It will be interesting to see in 6months whether the colonisation will be the "thing " that works?
We can then look back and see the numbers on Steam or check the leaderboards or see if those numbers will have increased .

Well they did say "existing Odyssey Assets" and then qualified it with "Settlements and Starports," so it seems clear enough, not individual buildings but settlements as a whole.

Probably be based on the existing Oddessy settlement archetypes that procedural generation uses, ie resource, tech, mining, etc. same with the existing station types. This is some ways would be smart as it is somewhat consistent with the rest of the universe and would be easier for Frontier to scale. BGS would also then be able to plumb into it and so on.

Listen next sentence after that. You are probably right, but I am not 100% sure. We'll see after next FU.

They said that player can decide what and where.

I see this different way. Frontier delivers stuff with full effort and as a complete ideas, but because it is a really big game, it needs compromises sometimes, what is totally fine for me. I think just players are dreamers, and don't think rationally, what is totally understandable of course. So half done or all done depends just of point of view.
It's just weird with elite community... we let by.
Game balance has been fdeved for years now. There's bugs introduced in to the game and we're just saying "but it's a big game"...
And Arx prices increase...
I mean... There's a limit for everyone how much they can bend over .. What's yours?

I don't care as long as I just like to play. I am pretty new player, so I don't live with nostalgia. For me it is the best game, because generally I am not a player. I have more than 2k hrs in Elite - and it's just one year. It's more than all other games since 20 years, or probably ever in my life. It is just my new hobby and I use it to relax, have fun, and feel enormous big galaxy. This is the first game when I want to pay more to support developers, when I started playing with other, when I started using discord an twitch.
And even more. I use carrier jumps as a timer when I am working from home, so... it even helps me with motivation in my work :D

So I don't bend over, this game is just made for me. I am sure I am not unique, just I like to write when I like something not only when I want to say about issues... I hope developers reads this forum and I am sure being positive is more motivational than just constant complaining.

Yes but most of the time the ones that were impacting me and my playstyle have been fixed, but it is sad.
There's bugs introduced in to the game and we're just saying "but it's a big game"...
Well it is, but people complain about the bugs sometimes even when they don’t affect them or even benefit them. Some get fixed as well. But it might be nice if FDev ignored calls for new stuff for a year to bug fix, but the lack of new stuff would upset some of the forum like last time they tried it.
And Arx prices increase...
Yes a definite shoot themselves in the foot there from my perspective and I haven’t bight any Arx since, my problem will be after the Cobra V release when I run out of previously purchased Arx probably.
I mean... There's a limit for everyone how much they can bend over .. What's yours?
I don’t know as I haven’t reached it yet, but all sorts of people keep proposing suggestions that might get the game there.

Apparently we as commanders bend a lot we have always done so and will continue to do so why ? Because even after all these years there isn't a better game, some may have better bits and pieces but as a whole there is nothing that can touch Elite.
Console players are still playing a game which has nothing new for over 2years.
There are issues but are just accepted it's "Elite".
But to be truthful more work has been done lately than before .
Fdev takes time to do stuff with less people working it takes longer.

Hard life, innit?

I just play a game, it is enjoyable, and, when I feel like doing something else, I can - then come back and the game is still enjoyable.

I guess, from your comment, that you have had enough...

Oh well, there is always NMS, X4 or Star Citizen, enjoy!

This no ranting, ED is a nice game, but for a decade Frontier has failed to make a MMO with medium to large sized group interaction. for a decade I was mocking it's the nicest MSPORPG, nices massive solo player online RPG. It has solo exploration, nice solo trading, community goals which is also not a driver for player player interaction, powerplay could be but isn't a driver for interaction, carriers, on paper a group asset, but nope. So what on earth should me make think colonisation facilitates medium to large size group interactions, that makes it desirable to daily join a squadron's discord with another 100 folks and participate in the sqadrons joint operations, listen to the leaders, puzzle out my own role in the ranks of the squadron oragnisation? I am not asking for a EVE Online clone, where you have thousands pilots flying under one banner. I know the tech under the hood of ED would not allow that. But the way ED is still able to be played in a 1984 Elite's solo style is really astonishing and not compatible with any meaningful social interaction. My expectation is super super low for a true MMO. I would appreciate it though if colonisation would facilitate a more complex builder system though.

If you couldn't play Elite Dangerous in a 1984 solo style, the playerbase would be a fraction of what it is today. The selling point of Elite, at least for me, is that I don't HAVE to be social. It's a game I can enjoy at my leisure, and share the experience with my friends when we happen to be gaming at the same time. There's a reason I don't play any MMO's, but Elite is my most played game since I bought it years ago.

You knew that when you bought the game - as did everyone else.
If you don't like it, tough luck, I'm afraid, it is very unlikely to change.
With the way the game is designed, it permits solo players, semi-social players (like me - I have no desire to play with all & sundry) and fully 'sociable' players. A stroke of genius on FD's part, giving all players the opportunity to play how they wish.

Of course, I do also enjoy the complaints that everyone isn't forced to play with everyone else, they are fun!

EXACTLY this.

I am also in awe at the announcement of the the new feature of colonisation. Can't wait. Even though I am 95%ish Solo player.

They said that player can decide what and where.
Sure, but I think that choice will boil down to which type of settlement, and some partial control on where and the game will then generate the resulting outpost based on existing assets and procedural generation. Which is good, because that scales and creates predictable building blocks that we can be confident will place down and work as expected. The outposts all then basically 'fit' in the existing world of Elite.

I would think more higher level 'pick type and location' and not 'I can place a picture frame in this precise location, in this bespoke hab type, for the aesthetics'. Anyone expecting complex outpost building beyond maybe being able to plonk pre-set buildings (or large prefabs) down in a given area is likely over-thinking things a bit.
