Colorful planets shown from Part 2 of the Beyond Livestream

Frontier spent three minutes talking about the new planet surfaces in tonight's livestream, so there wasn't much about them. They didn't even go down to a surface at all, only views from space. In case anyone is interested though here are pics of the five planets shown in those three minutes. For anything more we'll have to wait until explorers start exploring the beta next Thursday:

Thanks for screenshoting these, was about to do this myself.

I do think it's a shame that Ed elected to showcase the combat abilities of the Chieftan in favour of landing it on a gorgeous looking planet. They still seem to think that the primary focus should be pew pew rather than exploration. Probably never going to get them out of this mindset now. Oh well ... the new planets looks AWESOME tho!

Thanks for grabbing those images and getting this thread up Mengy, I was waiting for it to appear :p

Yes, FDev still don't seem to be prioritising exploration, but the new planetary changes DO look very good, especially considering they are (hopefully) just a first pass. Still, I won't let that get me down because I'm too excited for this update to drop and it seems to be the best one since ... 2.0?

You forgot to add this, I like it because it reminds me of our Moon!

Yes! My first thought when I saw it as well. I wonder when they intend to make our moon landable, could it be in the Q4 update or still a while away?

Thank you for sharing these they are nice ! I can't wait to go out there and visit the new look of the planets...

I'm bummed that they didn't go to the surface. It makes me wonder if maybe the effect of the update is much less pronounced up close.

From the official recap:
"We have overhauled the surface material system for the rocky, high metal content and metal rich planets. We have pushed the system to get a lot more out of it, but this is just the first step towards further major planetary system improvements. The contrast and variation across and between bodies is much improved.

We also hope that these planetary visual improvements (with more surface level improvements coming later in the year) will also bring a new vibrancy to the Elite Dangerous galaxy, encouraging wanderlust explorers to discover far systems and planets.

The colouration of the surfaces now more clearly telegraphs the chemical makeup and volcanic activity of the worlds. In addition, binary rocky/metallic planets more accurately simulate having similar colourations from shared formation materials where appropriate.

We have a range of colourations for:

RockyHigh MetalMetal Rich
No VolcanismNo VolcanismNo Volcanism
Low VolcanismLow VolcanismLow Volcanism
Mid to High VolcanismMid to High VolcanismMid to High Volcanism

"

Nice. Maybe they can reduce the amount of those pesky little rocks. Would make planetary exploration far more enjoyable without sacrificing realism! Or hopefully cluster them together with more open space in between...

I’m sure it’s less pronounced up close but it’s still going to look fantastic. There is going to be so much more visual variety on the surfaces due to the color combinations. The vistas at the color transitions particularly should be breath taking.

Next Thursday can’t come soon enough, I’ve been waiting over half a year to see these new planets up close. I really wish Frontier would consider the explorers more often when they present things like this though. It’s not so much the content itself as we’ll be able to do it ourselves in the beta next week, it’s more the cold shoulder treatment that we so often get that bothers me.

I'm curious about the different colour schemes re: volcanism. Will this be a planet-wide thing or would it be localized to active volcanic sites only?

At this point I'm most interested to see when Mengy's avatar will change. ;)

Ironically enough I've been giving that some thought! As long as 3.0 does indeed cure the Beigification I will finally be changing my avatar to something else. Maybe a pic of my commander's holo-me, maybe a pic of a colorful galaxy instead of a beige one...
