Come to Morgor without paying the troll toll and see what happens to you...
When did FD implement this troll toll thing? I've been in Morgor loads of times and never seen a hint of it. Must be an Open-only thing. Odd, because FD said they were against Open-only content.
I know it is never going to happen, and I've seen a million reasons given as to why (all of which I could argue, but I won't waste my time). I'd still prefer it, though.
Oh yeah, I'd still prefer it. I'm pretty sure I voted that way in the DDF (or at least for a switchable IFF) but that was before I knew how the P2P would be implemented, and how trivial it would be to take advantage of it. Having NPCs absolutely indistinguishable from players would probably need a whole new game at this point. Even then there might be ways of monitoring the client(s) and getting that information. At the end of the day the game knows who's who, and the game is running on players' hardware. Where there's a will there's a way. It always pays to remember that some people's game is to ruin other people's game, and that those two games may not be the same thing.
If people got spanked with bans and such from moderators they can't detect they'd worry someone was looking over their shoulder all the time and everywhere, hence influence beyond actual location and people wouldn't simply behave when the moderator ship was there.
If the gankers and griefers are of the same (limited) mentality as the hackers, boosters etc in other games they won't care one iota about being caught.
Worse, they would probably game it. Arrange with like-minded players to hit a CG or Engineer system at a specific time, then go on a spree. Person who gets the most "send them to the rebuy screen"s before the goderators show up is the winner. Well organised, this could wind up with the number of potential bans into double, even triple, figures. I can't imagine FD would be keen on pulling the ban trigger on dozens of players at the same time. The banees can play the victim card, and managing the PR becomes a challenge. It's all part of the metagame.
[Addendum]
Give them the option of godlike powers in game, when they feel like doing it and without it effecting their save-game.
You might want to use a different phrase, though. "Godlike powers" has a bit of a stigma around these parts.
