General Commandeer fleet ships

Here's a suggestion to include in the new update regarding Piracy. You have a number of derelict fleet carriers floating around right? Instead of 'repossessing' them and then letting them just sit there doing jack all, how about allow pilots to commandeer unused fleet carriers in order to reduce the clutter, provide an easier path to ownership (5B credits is ridiculous) and encourage more piracy, ship based combat, exploration, etc.

Yeah, no, if a fleet carrier has money in it it's not derelict, if it doesn't have money in it then it gets removed from the game, you want to take other players hard earned assets. Nope.

Hmm... Didn't know that. I just recall seeing a lot of repossessed carriers basically just sitting in system doing nothing and I've never seen one removed. I've been in the black for a while now and I don't own a fleet carrier myself. Just thought that would be a good gameplay loop and reuse assets. Besides, if a fleet carrier has money, wouldn't it be considered active? It's only repossessed when there isn't enough money to 'pay the crew' right? How long until those carriers are removed?

I asked google for you:

A fleet carrier is only removed through the decommissioning process under specific conditions:
    • Debt Trigger: If a carrier runs out of funds and its debt reaches 250 million credits (roughly 10 weeks of unpaid upkeep), it enters an automatic "Pending Decommissioned" state. [1, 2]
    • Decommissioning Countdown: Once the carrier enters this state, a 1-week (7-day) countdown timer begins, expiring during the next weekly server maintenance. [1, 2]
    • Permanent Removal: After the decommission countdown finishes and the ship is officially scrapped, it takes approximately two months for the decommissioned asset to be completely purged and permanently removed from the game map. Any remaining ships or modules stored on board are automatically transferred for free to the nearest Carrier Vendor station

The thing is my lightly funded carrier which hasn’t moved all year because I have been doing other things in the game is funded for over 10 years. Well funded ones will last far longer.
Some people park their carriers and shutdown the facilities on board to make the money last longer 🤷‍♂️

There is no rule requiring you to move your carrier around. Find a parking space you like and leave it as a home base if you want.

If you have the funds, it stays "in operation", whether the commander is in-game or not.

I suspect it'd be a boring loop walking through an empty carrier that has no crew and then finding out it cannot be flown as there's no crew. I think they need to keep working on the operations mega ship interiors and take what they've added in operations and integrate it into the galaxy so that there is more gameplay around megaships and PP carriers.

Hot dropping onto a powerplay carrier to extract data sounds like a much better loop than landing uncontested on an empty carrier and then still being billed for travel by Brewer corp. There's room for gameplay but I suspect the abandoned ships which mostly aren't abandoned because the economy is broken now and 5b is a couple of weeks worth of part time effort aren't where to focus attention and time.

I never said anything about in use, parked carriers. Those I completely understand. If anything I'm referring to the two month decomm period that follows the countdown according to what Varanica posted. Those are likely the source of abandoned fleet carriers I took note of. I just figured it'd be cooler than flat out decommissioning and removal to make it reusable. Besides, in a game where anything is allowed, why not allow take over of abandoned assets? Not active assets, not station keeping home bases. Just ones that have literally fallen out of use and are slated to be removed.

I understand what you mean, since technically there would be no crew to run the ship. But they could still make it a worthwhile endeavor. Overcoming security in the form of locked airlocks, security system lockouts, maybe even automated security turrets. A probably more tedious than wanted puzzle process to rewrite ownership. I'm sure there are other things that could be included to make it feel like it was worth the risk. Once official claim has been made, maybe a week long process to register and attract crewmembers before full operation is restored. Stored modules and ships could be likewise claimed or sold to facilitate the credits necessary to restore function and perhaps effect repairs.

Question:
If a decommissioned, officially scrapped carrier takes two months to be purged, can it be used for target practice or for testing newly acquired weapons, as our real-world navies have done with their decommissioned ships?

Possibly though as they are as invulnerable to players as any other station it sounds a little dull.
But someone could try it out for science if only to see if the carriers guns have been removed.

I know you didn't. I just made a comment. Relax!

But tell me, how do you know a carrier is abandoned, as you call it? The only way to know is when it is flagged by Fdev when it enters decommissioning.

It's not uncommon for me to turn off services to save some credits occasionally. That doesn't mean it's abandoned. I can leave the carrier for weeks at a time when out exploring, so just because there is no activity, that doesn't mean abandoned.

My carrier account allows it to sit idle for way over a year with no activity and be just fine when I do come back. That's not abandoned.

Other than the decom flag by Fdev, you are just guessing.

Besides, it's not your carrier, or your business what people do with their stuff, so ignore it and move on.

I'm not getting worked up, I'm just pointing out that I'm specifically referring to full on abandoned ships. Honestly I turned the UI off a long time ago to avoid seeing 30 POIs for fleet carriers but if I remember correctly... Decommed ships usually end up being full of asterisks to replace the name. And those are the only ships I mean. Abandoned = Decommisioned. I'm not guessing, I'm literally talking about the decommed ships. At no point have I ever referenced a carrier that was in stasis, used as home base, low powered, or anything of that nature. I don't understand why you keep pointing out that some people leave their carrier in one of those states.

Because I'm mentally challenged and prefer clarification?

But seriously, I just wanted to make sure which carriers you have been talking about. I totally understand how officially decommissioned carriers clutter the map.

I didn't say you were guessing.

THAT is what you posted. I apologize that your comment wasn't clear to me that you were specifically referring to just decommissioned carriers already flagged by Fdev.

Maybe ask Fdev why it takes so long for them to remove those types of carriers? It takes what, 3 months? 10 weeks of not paying the fee, 1-1.5 weeks for a service tick, then two months before they actually remove the carrier. So, it's all total almost four months, and it's not flagged till it's deemed in default of paying the fee, then two more months before removal. Those two months I'm curious about; it seems a bit long.
and I've never seen one removed

I haven't either, but then I don't hang out around carriers, just mine.

You absolutely did.

I also clarified both before and after your first post about ships that aren't abandoned. The last quote was a direct response to your post, which was quoted. How much more clarification do you need? If you want to troll that's fine but please don't hide behind being mentally challenged. By this point I'd already made it clear I was talking about decommissioned ships, why rephrase your statement and question as if I'd give a different answer?

I get the impression that English is not your native language! Have a nice day.

That's your response? That's the best you can come up with? You didn't even have the courage to include your own quote because you knew you were wrong. Thanks for increasing the comment count on my post and keeping it near the top, that'll bring more attention to it.

Those are not decommissioned, their names are tripping the profanity filter.

Decommissioning carriers have a different shade of orange and a diagonal stripe background on their nav point.
Oh.... well there were a lot of those then. I just remember seeing far too much of them and they never seemed to do anything, I don't think they were accessible but I could be wrong. Beyond that, do you think it would be worthwhile to make decommissioned carriers slated for purging into valid salvage assets?

I don't think they were accessible
A lot of carriers have restricted docking permissions to stop randoms buying the stuff in the market because using the market is quicker than transferring goods.

do you think it would be worthwhile to make decommissioned carriers slated for purging into valid salvage assets?
With how rare they actually are. No that time would be better spent on making gameplay for horizons surface assets, installations and megaships which would be generally applicable all the time in all places, not a small handful of carriers at any point in time. For a game with thousands of players you need to have thousands of targets for it to be worth implementing.

Conceptually salvage could be cool but salvaging carriers is not worth it as you'd then need to spawn in additional NPC carriers so that people could actually use the feature.
