Comms Chatter

Computer 'speaking' Comms Channel Chatter.

Heres a odd question.

What avenue do you think would work to have your PC 'speak' the comms chatter?

Do you think we could set something up with a external program to just straight read it from the comms box onscreen OR perhaps if we were to turn some kind of logging on then have a external program read the log as it happens.

I think this would make for interesting immersive experience as I currently play with the DK2, radio chatter might be cool, especially if you could work out random voices also.

Of course it could just be annoying as h3ll also.. :p

Thoughts?

I think it would be extremely annoying to be honest. The "Target shields online/offline" is already driving me nuts when checking targets during bounty hunting sessions. The NPCs spam comms at present and "Hostiles, great. The hits just keep coming" appears quicker than the whole sentence could be spoken.

It would be very difficult (i.e. expensive) to do well.

Doing it with voice actors would get repetitive unless you hired a cast of thousands, the hundredth time the same NPC voice came on the radio and said "Now.... you DIE!!!!" I'd probably throw my laptop out the window.

The alternative is text-to-speech type methods, for an example of what that feels like, skip to 20 seconds in this video of VoxATC for FSX:

Whilst you could improve it slightly by restricting the phraseology and then tweaking, it's not going to be near enough to actual speech to not annoy most people.

Quite honestly, I think I'd rather keep it as is.

Yes, you can use it to communicate with players who are nearby.
they will be the hollow stalks on the radar (the soild ones are npcs)

[Suggestion] Radio chatter

The space can be pretty quiet and lonely at times. I figured some radio chatter would make for some diversity in the game when it comes to sound. You could hear some [mostly inaudible] radio chatter while near federal ships, where you can make out words such as Roger, Delta, Niner, Copy, Engage, Repeat, etc.

It could also prove a nice addition to the Exploration aspect of the game. Instead of just looking for unexplored stars and planets, you could have some radio chatter whenever you get within a certain radius of a random object. It could be something like a broken satellite, transmitter or broken ship. In order to find it you'd have to listen to the radio chatter and try to make out what direction it's coming from. (Moving away from the source causes the radio chatter to decrease in strength, whereas moving closer to it will have the opposite effect.)

Besides, it's great for immersion, which is an important aspect of any simulator game.

What are your thoughts?

Yep. For a "simple" first implementation they could even add voices that you cant make out what they say fully. Just lightly/low volume when passing a station/planet in SC for example. Some static and what resembles voices. That would be truly epic and no expensive voice actors needed. Actually i would prefer this type of chatter than voice acted real lines. That would get repetitive fast. Static/chatter that can be proceduraly done where it randomized the chatter and static would be superb and work in the long run.

What I would really like to see is voices for all npc ship interactions like for ship scans, enemy taunting, authority vessel talk, etc.
This would add a lot since no story.

Indeed. Chatter would be very cool thing though. Passing those populated planets/Stations and you hear static and mumbling voices. Voice acted lines is neato but will take a bigger and more costly effort. Im all for it though. A couple of different voices saying a couple of lines each. For feds and pirates. Lines that can come again and again, thats ok, as long as they are there. You might have for example 3-5 of the same lines where a cop says "turn off your thrusters while i scan you". So you have 3-5 different voices for that line and a couple other lines. And the same for pirates and wanteds (for battle) and randomize the voice actor everytime you meet them. Maybe we get it later. Maybe. :)

I fully support this.

I don't know if any of you remembered playing Freelancer over 10 years ago, but that game had great immersion despite all its unfilled potentials. You could hail every single NPC and they would respond in some way. You can also hear casual conversation between NPC ships, and pirates/faction police will verbally notify you when they are scanning you. It made the universe seemed alive and exciting eventhough it was vastly smaller in scale than ED.

Currently the game lacks both player and environment interaction, which should be addressed to attract new players.

Drop out of supercruise. Set your throttle to zero. And listen. The background is already there.

Most of the time you make too much noise to hear it.

I agree, more background random ness would be cool. When exploring and the scanner is active on a earth like world you could start picking up radio transmissions if they have a somewhat advanced civilisation, similar to 20th century earth

There is already low level radio chatter by stations, but being able to hear even garbled communications between ships while in deep space and in places such as resource extraction sites would be nice - I agree that one of the things that made Freelancer great was theconstant low grade chatter in the background, and it would help with immersion in Elite.

Radio Chatter and Voice Recognition for VR headset users.

OK. I am just a noob but one thing I have noticed is that there is not a lot of voice chatter. I am a pilot and I am sure the other pilots out there will say the same that while the sky may look clear there are normally a lot of people talking on the radio. Why should Space be any different?? As well too if people are using VR headsets and it will become a lot more popular the voice activated commands for your ship would be very cool and helpful. How many space movies have the commander interacting with the ships computer or a droid or some thing. Most of them I think.

Maybe there could be a radio channel that could be set in a given sector, or those that have stations. And if you have the voice recognition you could talk to the tower and request permission to land and maybe activate an autopilot landing system. I know this game is a new release and I am really enjoying it but it feels like something is missing.
Cheers
Matt

I proposed the same thing, for the same reason, though I used truckers as an analogy since I thought more people could relate to that than piloting or large scale boating. Other people have posted about open chat channels, though you and I are I think the only people mentioning radio simulation. I've been told that the beta had an open local chat, and they dumped it. With any luck they can start looking at bringing that back.

As far as voice commands, I've seen it mentioned that some people are using intermediate setups to get basic voice commands on their ships already. I don't know any details other than that, but it does seem to be possible. If so, keeping it outside of the built in game functions will help the devs stay focused on the more critical playability issues.

Extra Comms Chatter

Hey guys, first I would like to say I love the game and the amazing sounds, but I wanted more comms chatter, static, etc. So I've found this web site http: //www .liveatc.net/search/?icao=wmsa (can't post a link since I have not posted too many times, if someone could correct that) anyway click on the green "listen" button for browsers and you will start hearing actual airport chatter, there is times where is silent but I think it adds another level of realism in my opinion. Anyway thought I would share, al;so idf you find another site feel free to share.

Thanks Commanders!
