ANNOUNCEMENT Community Update - January 3306

Greetings Commanders,

Happy New Year!

As we enter 3306, we would like to tell you about the next update coming to Elite Dangerous!

Thanks to all the commanders who joined in the beta back in November, we're happy to announce that the January Update will be launching on the 14 January! As we mentioned back in October, the first half of this year's updates will be focused almost exclusively on Fleet Carriers and fixing as many high priority bugs and issues as possible, ensuring that the game runs as smooth as a freshly-purchased Cobra MkIII. To be clear, this means that Interstellar Initiatives/Community Goals will be on hold while we focus on the subsequent series of updates and betas that will be coming over the following months.

Much like the January Update, these updates will be accompanied by an open beta, allowing commanders to jump in and see the content before it's released, as well as help us identify any major issues or bugs. We'll be providing more details about all of these updates in the near future, so keep an eye on all of our usual channels.

The team are hard at work on the next major milestone coming to Elite Dangerous at the latter end of this year and, as also mentioned in the previous post, we'll be ready to start revealing more about this after the Fleet Carriers update. We know you're keen to hear more, and we're excited to be able to show you what's to come!

So no chance of getting my PS trophy for achieving community goals now then? Cheers.

Last night (11 Mar 2020) D2ea made a statement in a podcast that there will be no Fleet carriers, apparently, there will be little, if any development on ED at all "for the foreseeable future" as quoted from a document he had. Has anyone else seen the same information, or reached the same conclusion?

I happen to have a document that states the exact opposite! I created it this morning.

Not sure if this was what he was referencing: DtEA's YouTube video "Hello Dave" where he stated, "...where [FDEV] were not planning to do any new community goals or new interstellar initiatives or write any new Galnet articles... and they basically said they were not going to continue it, and [FDEV] would let us know if that ever changes."

Stephen had previously clarified to Rootsrat that Fleet Carriers would be part of the next update. In relation to that Stuart asked about CGs, IIs, and Galnet.

However what Stephen said to Stuart when asked in relation to CGs, IIs, and Galnet, was...No... (paraphrased)

Most of this was announced last week, so maybe things have changed since then. I mean the earth has moved approximately 23,149,152 km from where it was when FDEV told this to the community.

BTW, many thanks to @StuartGT and @rootsrat for the clarifying questions and CM Stephen for the response.

EDIT: CM Will did walk the statement about the end of CGs, IIs and Galnet back a bit in clarifying Stephen's Statement.

I did run across this "document" that ended up on the Fleet Carriers thread....
Since it looks like a Sophomoric Photoshop Frankenstein, my opinion is that it's not official:

Maybe people were just misguided or misinformed. Or maybe this is real and FDEV really have moved everyone to working on next era, so they're hiring primary students to do PR.

Frontier are going to produce an F1 based management game and have contracted with the F1 Organisation to make 4 parts starting this year. It looks like ED will just be left to drift, with little if any updates. No doubt they will transfer all of their Dev team to do this.

According to Liberum's report last November, FDev's dev breakdown (total staff 500+) is as follows:

FDEV current developers 407
Liberum assumption headcount breakdown

  • Elite Dangerous 120
  • Planet Coaster 40
  • JWE 40
  • Planet Zoo 45
  • Major licenced IP 60
  • Total developers working on announced games 305
  • Implied developers working on future games 102

Note that the above information was from before this official F1 licence announcement, so the "Major licenced IP" referenced in that table is a different game franchise:

Following the signing of the F1 Licence and the IP licence previously announced in March 2019, Frontier can now confirm that both of the major new internally developed releases in the financial year ending 31 May 2022 ("FY22") will benefit from major global IP licences and both will be released on multiple platforms.

But Carriers are not coming, and the level of support to Elite Dangerous is being cut back.............

Is quote 2 as (in)accurate as post 1?
