Compartment splitting

Is it possible to get compartment splitters for the cost of less rom. To get a splitter space is used to make the outer shell and additional hallways. I think the smallest splitters is probably a grade 3 compartment where you sacrifice the space equal to a grade 1 compartment and could install a 2+1 splitter or a 3*1 splitter.

I've thought about that for some time now: when I load a size 3 module in a size 5 slot, it seems like there should be some spare space over around it. Now, if you could fit some kind of structure in your size 5 slot that provided rigidity, power and data connections and media piping, you should be able to cram 2 size 3 modules in that size 5 slot.
Why two 3's in a 5?
Well, cargo racks hold double the amount if you go up one size, but all that structure and cables and piping take up space too, so that's why. That structure weighs something as well, but could come in two grades like the Planetary Vehicle Hangar (grade H and G), where the latter is lighter but more expensive.
Maybe the splitter should draw some power too, like logic circuits for power management and valves and heat distribution. It can generate some heat too, from inefficiencies in power transfers and those logic circuitry. Hey, let it have some integrity points as well, and if it gets destroyed, the modules within will be inoperable because they can't get power/data/cooling.

I can understand that this suggestion can shift the game balance, since it provides disproportionately more slots for the bigger ships, i.e. they can fit so many more modules with this change, and I think I've found one of the arguments against it: the limpet controller modules.
- A size 1 controller can keep 1 limpet in line. OK
- A size 3 controller can control 2 limpets simultaniously. Fine.
- A size 5 controller can only do 3 limpets at once. Problem!
- A size 7 controller can manage 4 limpets? Huh? Diminishing returns!
With my suggestion, you can suddenly fit 2 size 3 controllers in a size 5 slot, which together can keep 4 limpets in line, one more than the bigger controller. Even worse with the size 7 slot, where you can either fit 2 size 5 controllers for a total of 6 limpets (2 more) or cascade my modules (two splitters in a splitter) where you get 4 size 3 controllers for a grand total of 8 limpets instead of the measly 4 from the size 7 controller. This need some thinking over.

I propose two ways to get around this:
- Either change the amount of limpets the size 5 and 7 controllers can manage from 3 and 4 to 4 and 8 respectively
- Or adjust the power consumption, heat generation and weight of the splitter modules to make them undesireable enough for this stunt, but still good enough to be of some use.

I can understand that the slotted limpet controllers are filling some of this role, ditto the slotted scanner modules, making this suggestion obsolete; I just want a clear answer that it will be so, and desireably a time horizon on when.
