Complete List of (real) Nebulae and Galaxies in Elite

This is a growing list of all the REAL (i.e. not procedural) nebulae and galaxies found in game. We have found 141 nebulae and 32 external galaxies as of writing. The first table is the list of all nebulae visible in the sky from the bubble, with several sky charts (taken from Sol) indicating where they are. In the second table, the galaxies are listed, with links to real images, followed by sky charts of their locations in the sky taken from the game. The third table contains all other reachable nebulae, and the last table contains the unreachable ones. At the end is a list of some real Nebulae that are notably not in game. Distances are given, as well as if there is a central star to jump to for the smaller planetary nebulae. Every nebula has a real image and an in-game screen shot as well.

*New list* Nebulae that are reachable only with jump mats!

All contributions will be received with utmost gratitude!

You can use this list to find interesting destinations, or just to help you put a name to the stuff you see in the sky. Just select them on the galmap and then there will be a circle around them in the skybox.

Also, don't forget to check out:
for more of the same, but including the procedural stuff too :)

For all nebulae (and galaxies):

  • Click the Nebula Name for a link to a real image of the nebula
  • Click the Screenshot link for an in-game image

Consider installing an extension/addon that gives you a preview of image links when you hover your mouse over it :)

Galaxies

Galaxies in Elite Discussion Thread: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=202295

I have found 32 galaxies in total. I have done my best to try to identify them. I think I'm mostly accurate but could be wrong and am open to correction. For the 3 galaxies seen above the Milky Way in the western direction, I really struggled and I've made my best guesses, mainly based on the appearance rather than the position. I think the only galaxies that are at the correct distances on the galaxy map (based on parallax) are the Magellanic Clouds, I think the others are just put at infinite distance, even though some of them are quite a lot closer and should exhibit parallax.

I took screenshots from the galaxy map and upped the brightness to make the galaxies more visible but some of them are really hard to see, and you will need to do the same to see them. Some I only found once I upped the brightness!

The galaxy names in the table are hyperlinks to real images of them. The entry in the Direction column take you to my sky chart screenshot of the region of the sky they are in, with them labelled. Please add to this if you can!

Updated with charts showing nebulae as well as other nebulae that aren't visible or don't exist :)

Wouldn't it be nice if we could add filters to our windscreens that let us look at the sky in different wavelengths, since that'll be at least part of the reason why the real pictures are often much more impressive than the in game things...

Very nice! For some other real planetary nebulae see my posts starting at https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=141595&page=3&p=2345275&viewfull=1#post2345275

One little quibble is the coordinate system you've chosen. I'm not a fan of terms like coreward & rimward because they aren't really logical. After all, *every* direction along the galactic plane is rimward since you'll eventually end up at the rim :D. And once you've travelled 26k LY 'coreward' you are heading directly away from the core. I much prefer using NSWE when looking down from above the galaxy, partially at least because this reflects the default view in the ED galaxy map. So North is the direction from Sol towards Sag A*, South away from it, West to the left and East to the right. Up & down then suffice for the other two axes which is logical since they refer to the distance from the galactic plane. It's just a matter of preference really, but the one I describe is already in use in Erimus's Community Mapping project so it could get confusing to have multiple schemes in use.

Yes, I confirmed it. All of them are way too far from the nearest star.

Allitnil, I get your point. I'll change it and also thanks for the nebula list, will add them when I get a chance

Great list! I have two named nebulae for it as well: there is the Blue Flash, a planetary nebula (NGC 6905), and the Skull and Crossbones nebula (NGC 2467) some 15000 ly out. Both are listed in-game with their nicknames. The latter is so long that system names are shortened to "Skull and Crossbones Neb. Sector".

Thanks for the Blue Flash. Skull is there under NGC 246 - bit confused now.

The Skull nebula is separate from the Skull and Crossbones nebula. NGC 246 and NGC 2467 too. A bit confusing, yeah, but they are in distinctly different places.

Seagull Nebula has a central star of BD-10 1848 [2656.38 : -159.16 : -2712.63]
Thor's Helmet nebula has a central star of ALS 299 [ 2704.16 : -19.19 : -2469.28]

Well you can see where I went wrong. I searched NGC 246 while looking for the Skull neb, and it brought me to the Skull and Crossbones nebula and I was like w/e

Thanks, well spotted. Is the Seagull a Planetary Nebula? I'm not in game right now

Wow! What a fantastic effort! I can see a ton of work has gone into this, bravo cmdr :)

I'm in the middle of overhauling the maps and data on the mapping thread, and both projects will complement each other perfectly.

Excellent work drkaii. The explorers community is awesome

Thanks! Yes, at least 4-5 hours, but I have to say it was really fun.
And yes, we need a website, something like Elite-Cartographics.com.

Actually that's a really good idea, and maybe my next project
Nope, it's a "regular" nebula. (I'm not sure what the proper term is.)
Ah yes it's just a regular emission region, those are all n/a because they have many central stars
Amazing work! Now to lose tons of time looking at the pretty pictures...
space is purty
