Hardware & Technical Computer Build to run Elite Dangerous

Only two memory slots? I thought everything was tripple channel now?

Out of the top of my mind, recently only the 1366 socket was a triple channel. Which didn't really bring any meaningful advantage, being superseeded by the quad channel x79 chipset. That, for gaming, is also not all that superior particularly when we consider the added cost bad less current features when compared with the consumer grade z87 dual channel chipset.

Oh yeh! The same question applies though? That board is dual channel? I thought triple channel was the flavour now?

Intel is quad but, as Pyros says, mainly the consumer chipsets are dual-channel but they offer more features, so for us home users and gamers, we'd probably not want to sacrifice the features for quad-channel which I don't think offers us consumers much benefit.

I have dual channel, I mulled over quad but I preferred the board that was offering me dual. Maybe if I was buying again now I'd revisit that decision in light of the new boards available.

Multi-channel memory beyond dual channel gives only small benefits except in memory intensive applications such as video editing or heavy duty graphics, while the extra expense nullifies the negligible gains to be had in games or general computing, especially when weighed against the extra features available on dual-channel mainboards.
Triple channel is (AFAIK) only supported by LGA 1366 mainboards, while only the i7 & Xeon processors support quad channel memory.

OK, wireless card is behaving itself after reinstalling Windows, but now I'm having a strange issue with a certain game - Battle of Britain 2:
I've recently upgraded most of my system - specs in my sig. The only old component is the GPU.

I loaded up the game and it ran like crap - ten times worse than before my upgrade - so I decided to reinstall Windows; I had changed to a new motherboard after all. After that, the game ran as smooth as anything on pretty much maximum settings on 'Battle of Britain Day' mission (literally more than a hundred planes in the sky at once). Then I tried to install some mods - and ever since then, the game is running like crap again. I tried reinstalling the game and v2.12/multiskin - no joy. What's going on here and how do I sort it out?

Incidentally, I also tried Cliffs of Dover and that ran well so I don't think there's anything wrong with the hardware.

Thanks in advance. :)

Best PC Specs To Play This Game

Hi all

I am getting ready for after Gamma to spend some money on a desktop computer (UK based) and would appreciate some serious feedback on what would be the optimum gamer pc for this game, to ensure no lag, jitters, freezes, denigration of graphics etc.

Got a reasonable budget but I want whatever I buy to be just perfect for playing this game.

Please can someone list what they recommend as suitable specs below.

the short answer is.... it is far too early to tell. If you want not to spend too much and guarantee good performance, then you'll have to wait and see what the final released game (or perhaps late beta) brings to the table.

Hi mrjupp,

I've merged your thread into the rig to run elite thread. :)

If you can provide a figure for your budget it makes it easier to work out what would suit.
Do you want to build it yourself or someone else build it for you?
Do you have any existing components you can reuse like keyboard and mouse, TV/monitor?

Here is an intelligent way of proceeding. I always have acts like that, concerning my machines

This.

If you want to figure things more out by yourself, this thread:

might also prove helpful. Lots of good info, albeit a bit on the "wall of text" side. :)

I'll allocate between £1,200 and £1,800. I realise UK prices are a lot higher than the US for custom design or even off the shelf.

I'll have a look at the other thread at the weekend when I'm not working.

Thats a realistic budget for a mid to high end machine with/without a decent display.

If the developers of the game could share their opinion of graphics card (especially as some cards are not up to it) required and what they would on my sort of budget cobble together at retail cost, with recommended average (not minimum) specs, then I as a complete noob on anything techie (hey I do online marketing and digital management for a living) will know what direction to look at.

With such a large budget I would look at going for a Z87 motherboard (probably from asus but look at what suits you best), the i7 4770K cpu as you can overclock it (am not au fait with AMD cpus so cannot recommend anything else) and for a gfx card , any of the latest ones with a good review will be sufficient (770 or R9 - some people have a preference for one or the other manufacturer but it doesn't matter too much as long as it has all the features you want). Don't forget to get a CPU fan to replace the stock one and get a SSD HD and go for 64 bit OS as you will prefer to have 16GB Ram at 1600 or better. A case that has good ventilation and a decent PSU 600W and that should set you back about £1200. A monitor, keyboard and mouse plus a controller (everyone is raving about the X52) and a backup hard drive and you will be getting to the upper end of your budget depending on the exact model you go for.

There's some good sites mentioned on this thread. overclockers is one thats been mentioned a few times. not dealt with them myself but could be worth a look.

They're not always the cheapest, but they're reliable and I've always had good service. I buy most of my parts from there when I'm doing a build. Also, 100 posts on the OCUK forum results in free P&P ;)
