Hardware & Technical Computer Build to run Elite Dangerous

Computer Spec Check

I am currently using a Maingear Pulse 11.

The basic specs are...

Processor: Intel® Core™ i5 3360M 2.8GHz/3.3GHz Turbo 3MB L3 Cache HD 4000 [35W]

Memory: 8GB Corsair® Vengeance™ DDR3-1600 1.5V (2x4GB, SODIMMs)

Graphics and GPGPU Accelerator: NVIDIA® GeForce™ GT 650M 2GB with Optimus Technology

Is this enough horse power to run the Beta version of the game?

Yes, it should run E: D Beta. How well, that's another question altogether, but I suspect you'll get well playable framerates if you're willing to sacrifice some bling and use resolution lower than FullHD.

Thanks. I can live with less bling. That is a compromise I make for the portability of the system.

Will this be enough?

Hello, i currently have this setup:

CPU: Core i5 4570 4x 3.4 GHz
GPU: Nvidia GTX 460 1 GB
RAM: 8GB DDR3 1600

Will this be enough to run the game (meaning when it's fully released) in fluid gameplay in full HD?
The graphics card is the only remain left from my old setup, will most likely exchange it with a new GTX 970 or the like, early next year.

Mostly not using AA at all, so i leave it off... don't really need it in that resolution and it also helps the old card. :)

That should run it OK, although clearly the GFX card is your bottleneck!

Just another data point. My current build:

i5-4690k @ 4.1ghz
8 gigs DDR3-1600 RAM
AMD R7 265 (soon to be replaced by a GTX 970)
120gb Samsung 840 EVO (Windows, E:D, and a few other games installed here)
500gb WD Blue (less frequently played games)
22" 1920x1080
2 x 19" 1280x1024 (soon to be replaced by a pair of 22's to match the main)
Thrustmaster T-Flight HOTAS
Arctic P531 surround sound headset

Plays E:D perfectly with everything maxed @ 50-60FPS on the main screen, if i run all three screens framerate drops into the 35-45 range.

will my computer work?

I have just bought a new laptop. It has Pentium N3530 four core CPU and 4GB of ram. It is a new Toshiba Satelite C50-B-133. The game keeps crashing on the menu screen. Is this machine not up to the job of running this game? I am a bit useless with computer specs and what is needed. I just bought the machine because I thought it would run the game and would like to know if I should bring it back if it is not up to the job. I have tried reducing the settings in the options page to see if it would help but it is still crashing.

I am sorry as I am not very familiar with hardware jargon so please excuse my ignorance. Can someone google the spec on this machine and tell me if it is no good or if there is anything I can do to sort it out?

@orfeboy:
I think the game isnt fun with that notebook.
The CPU is to slow, only integrated graficcard (whcih have to take his memory from RAM), only 4 GB RAM...

I think this notebook is not able to run Elite in any setting.

what machine?

What then should I be looking for in order to run it? I would prefer a laptop if possible. I just bought that machine so would like to bring it back if it is not up to the job. What should I be asking for?

Would this machine do?

Off the top of my head, an i5 processor, a separate graphics card and 4Gb of Ram.

These are the current official minimum specs to run the game-show them to you supplier and ask about the laptop equivalent.

Direct X 11
Quad Core CPU ( 4 x 2Ghz is a reasonable minimum)
2 GB System RAM (more is always better)
DX 10 hardware GPU with 1GB video ram
Nvidia GTX 260
ATI 4870HD

Assuming your budget is around the price of that Toshiba and ASUS X550CA, you have a problem. You're not gonna find a laptop in that range. You NEED a dedicated graphics card that meets the minimum specs, integrated graphics won't do.

The minimum I would consider is something like the MSI CX61 (goes for a ~$700). This will run Elite OK at low-medium settings.

If you want the full on experience with high graphics detail you're looking at something like the ASUS ROG G750 ($1450).

If you could do a tower instead of a laptop here's a couple options: Corei5/GTX750ti-based system for ~$700
Corei5/GTX970-bases system for ~$1000 (this is what I'm building right now).

Running the game @ 40/60 hz/fps. Not counting in those drops when in SC(super cruise). All settings high and ultra.
This is what I have in and around my rig:

  • Motherboard:---------Asrock 990Fx Extreme3
  • Processor:------------Amd FX8320 8core
  • Int'Memory:----------16Gb dual channel Crucial Ballistix pc3 ddr3
  • Graphics:-------------Gigabyte Geforce GTX760 oc 4Gb-GDDR5
  • Storage 1:------------Samsung 250Gb SSD on which E.D. is installed
  • Storage 2:------------1.5Tb Western Digital 7200rpm HDD
  • Storage 3:------------500Gb Western Digital 7200rpm HDD
  • Controller 1:----------Thrustmaster T-Flight-HotasX
  • Controller 2:----------Logitech G27 Steering wheel and paddles
  • Controller 3:----------XBox360 wireless controller

I just upgraded to a MSI gaming R9280 from a GTX 560, although I had reasonable FPS with the Nvidia card, the R9 is much, much faster, my card is benchmarked at being a little faster than the GTX 760, as it is factory overclocked, but much cheaper, I got mine for £149.99 in the uk, also got the AMD reward offer of 3 games, one of which was a Star citizen package.

The games value must be close to £60-70, best deal ever and well pleased.
I also have an AMD FX 6300 cpu, plenty fast enough for most games today.

I am happy with both my AMD products, and happy with the price too.

Because A, it is cheaper and B it has future proofing within it... some of the AMD architecture is still not being used yet, and people say this will give the processor more speed in the future...

It is also what most Intel fan boys miss. These little bits, that make AMD better. Also they are much better chips at multitasking...

We are also hoping that Windows 10 will use the processor to the full, which is still not happening with Windows 8...

So simple answer is AMD = future proofing. :D Oh and cheaper... Honestly just check out the videos on youtube. An intel processor, at that price, is not worth an extra 5 fps. And is has been proved, that is all you get. Saving the money on intel, gave me a speed boost, as I was able to setup with an SSD. Major boost.
OK! Looking to upgradre myself in next 3-4 months, so you've just confused me even more now. Skylake, broadwell, AMD? Argh!

Do not be confused anymore... :D

Something along these lines, will play any game and max settings. Because this is basically what most of us have.

Hi there.

Have been waiting for ED Beta to arrive and just before it did my laptop died, eventually got it up and running with help of computer repair shop and myself!

Very disappointed when ED would not load up.

With a lot of help with ED Support (thanks), got it up and running (yay)
Only to find my older than I thought laptop was FAR from up to the task of running ED, even in low graphics/resolution. In fairness ED Support said it wouldn't run it/struggle!

Should of checked minimum specification before pledging on Kickstarter but to be able to play Elite again meant pledging first and buying new PC later if needed!
Well it's now certainly needed!

My question was going to be what should I buy to run ED at a decent rate etc.?
The quote above though sounds like what I need.

Should I go for this, I've never purchased a PC from Ebay before!!
Will need a few extras to the base tower shown.

An operating system, Windows 7 or 8.1?
A monitor
Memory card reader would come in handy for only a few quid.
SSD? Good idea or not, I reckon it would be!!
Flight stick
Speakers, nearly forgot speakers!

I have a reasonable external keyboard, mouse and external hard drive (back up)

All of the above (except flight stick and speakers) is available as add ons from the Ebay shop so worth getting at the same time and have fitted at time of build.

Any help, suggestions greatly appreciated, sorry for long first post.

Regards
