Hardware & Technical Computer Build to run Elite Dangerous

I plan to run ED on my current rig, which is 3 years old by now

AMD Phenom II X6 T1055
8GB RAM
ATI Radeon 6950

Controllers:
TrackIR (if supported in ED)
Thrustmaster Flightsitck X
Logitech Gamepad F510 (last resort choice if a controller is REQUIRED and nothing else worked).

Sorry, my HOTAS died in early 2000s. Decided I wasn't playing flight sims as often as before so I bought an "all-in-one" stick instead of a full HOTAS setup like I had back in the 90s.

I hope my rig can still run ED, and I dun mind turning graphics down for better framerates if need to.

Everything is Cool......

Everything is cool regarding my dad. He only asked about the machine they were selling in there. The other PYRON. He said there are two there and the one I was going to buy that my new machine is based on. Only cost about $2000.00.....probably a little bit more than that.

I was just lucky he didn't find out about my new machine and how much it really costs.

Now, I just got to make room in my old bedroom for it and wait another eighteen hours for the new machine to arrive.

Graphics Card on the way

Just had an email to say my graphics card will be here by saturday, Im another going for the 290x.... Hopefully itll be just in time for Alpha.

I was getting worried I wouldnt be ready

Now I just have to work out how to squeeze it into my case :D

Excited!!

If at first it dies not fit - get a bigger hammer...

i5 3.00gb with GTX630 4gb gfx card & 16gb DDR3 ram, hopefully it will run on top settings ?.

Depending on resolution, I wouldn't expect that it runs with top settings, far from it (seriously underpowered GPU). Hopefully ED will be efficient and your system will run with decent (pleasant and fast) settings.

But for maximum visual candy at high resolutions (1440p +) I expect the required card to be a 280x or higher. All speculation on my behalf, of course.

Note: if a person has a rig good enough to run alpha/beta decently, I'd advise to at least wait for gamma before jumping into an ED triggered upgrade.

Come on harvey norman........

I just rang them a moment ago to ask them where my new computer is and they said seven o'clock at night. Because the salesman is being kept back later at work. That's a whole other hour, but less than five minutes now

It's Here, Now the Fun Can Begin.....

No, the fun can begin once it's set up!

It arrived just about 27 minutes earlier and I made a very short video of each box being placed on top of, next to and in front of each other in the kitchen.

I'll put it up later, once I upload it to You-Tube.

The box the Cooler-Master - En-Forcer Gaming Case came has a big black (Darth-Vader Type) robot on it and the speakers are bigger than I thought they would be, Cool!!!!

Are you excited Mick?
Getting a new machine is like Xmas for me :D

My new rig just arrived.

Unfortunately, I'm at work til late.

Double unfortunately, I'm having to extract the RAM, ship it back to Overclockers so they can ship me the 'correct' RAM that should have come with it.

So I guess Xmas is delayed ;)

Oh, Posted In The Wrong Thread/Topic.....

About to Start Uboxing Now.....

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dad reckons I should unbox and try out the Equaliser, Sub-Woofer, Twin-Speakers first. See if they work properly.

About to upload the New Uber-Computer and Accessories Unboxing videos to You-Tube right now. I'm may soon set the machine up soon to see if works as it should, but there are some snags we have discovered already.....

Nice one go get it set up fast I want PICS :D

Will videos do, although sometime my Handy-Cam takes snapshots highlighting the videos while it's recording. So I will see about those as well.

I've just discovered they didn't include the Norton 360 Anti-Virus like they promised. MY only prior hint would have been when I reminded them to add some speakers and they said they needed to optimise my list of parts to say under the budget. So, They took off $70.00 AUD and told me they were no longer having the Graphics Card overclocked. Which they said wouldn't make much of difference for what I would be using the computer for and then they said they may have to knock some else off or use a much cheaper part and I said no don't. I will simply pay the damages with the money I have got. They calculated this and this upfront payment came to $246.00 AUD. They didn't really indicate I had to pay this now until prior to having it delivered to their store last night. (It's 1:25 AM right now) Luckily I actually had $274.00 AUD still in my bank balance at the time. They must have crossed off the Anti-Virus software. Which is pretty important when I may need to go onto the net to download the game ALPHA. Hopefull I can visit them again tomorrow and just buy it with the money I have left.

Otherwise, I will need to wait until Monday morning (Anytime after 12:00 AM Midnight Sunday).

Like I said, Anti-Virus software is essential to being online. I can't really use the new computer without it and I even recall the other salesman telling me this while I was picking out my computer accessories Friday last week.

The other sang sis that my dad reckons after he did preliminary connection of all the major peripheries to the tower. He said there are not enough ports to go round. There are only four ports and the keyboard and the mouse take up all four. (Well, I think that's what my dad meant.) There were also two antenna that needed to be ported. They were packaged in the box the motherboard came in with all the other surplus material. So, perhaps they are surplus as well. We are both not sure if they are both really needed and perhaps they another two port would be freed up if they weren't used. I'm not really sure and we still haven't connected the speakers yet.

Damn, I hope I don't have to return the flipping tower/gaming case. I'm rather attached to it and I don't have much more money to spare. At
least it's still under warranty. Though if I try to replace it now, I may have to wait another week, and I though it would be ready by this weekend :(

Be very, very thankful!

Norton is a bucket of steaming plop - no other way to describe it. Such a shame - the old Norton Utilities were just great back in the day.

Antivirus is included with Windows 8. It's available for free for Windows 7 - Microsoft Security Essentials. It's not wonderful but gets the job done. There are many other free antivirus programs, and unless you are in business there is no need to pay for any of it!

Good luck with the build :)

You should have more than four USB ports. They will be on the motherboard and need connected to the outside world through cables in brackets that you screw into the back of the case. They are usually in the bag of motherboard bits :)

Think yourself lucky!
Agreed. Hate shop salesmen who tell you outright lies ("you need an antivirus to go online"). As mentioned, go for Microsoft Security Essentials. It's unobtrusive and does the job, and is free. You don't need an AV to go online at all: what an AV will do for you is scan for potential nasties in things you download. If you're downloading something from a trusted website (e.g. microsoft.com for their AV) you'll be safe enough.

As for the USB ports, even if you don't have more than four, you should be able to buy a cheap USB hub. A 4-port hub will effectively add 3 ports (as it will take one of your existing ones to give you 4 more).

I would suggest asking here if there's anything you aren't sure about. Don't go back to the shop for advice, as they'll tell you anything to get you to part with your money (and in most cases don't know what they're talking about anyway). If I understood correctly, they tried to charge you $70 to overclock your graphics card? That's something you should be able to do yourself with any number of free utilities.
