Hardware & Technical Computer Build to run Elite Dangerous

Anecdotally, I would say yes. I made a factions video that got down to below 30 fps in 1.0, while I've not seen it go below 45 fps in 1.1 with identical settings. There could be other factors at play though, since one video is not a good sample.

Thanks - There's hope yet for my old machine then hopefully :)

What graphics card/resolution/detail was that?

Agreed, although somewhat surprising that it is quite so CPU intensive. I'd still like to see the results of an equivalent test on an i5 and i7

Commander Wombat

It is still a bit too early to say anything definitive about the CPU/GPU usage.

One curious thing I noticed on the Afterburner monitor in Factions was that the GPU usage had a seesaw behavior - from 100 to almost zero and back up. Really unsteady. CPU usage was also well under 100%.

Regardless the animation was always smooth.

Anyway, will test it more thoroughly later.

1.5 GB GTX 660, 8 GB RAM, i7-4770; maximum settings at 1920x1080.

However, the settings seem to cover a broad range in power. People have managed to get good results with older machines by reducing resolution and/or detail settings. For example, here is an alpha 1.0 video at 1280x720 on low settings using my integrated graphics chip; it still looks pretty good :).

Is it worth me trying to run the alpha on my old Core2 Duo E8400 & GTX 460 machine ?
My monitor is 1920x1080 but has smart scaling, so I could try lower resolutions too, if anyone is interested in the results ?

Well, your graphics card is probably the bottle kneck for your performance? And your suggestion you're only using 50% or less CPU on the big battle would back that up?

My graphics card is about the same as your, if not a tiny step up... But my CPU is my weak spot, probably being as much as 1/2 the speed at a rough guess...

Why not if you can? Try the final battle as that seem a good solid test? Try it at full resolution and a far lower resolution?

I just built my new PC for Elite Dangerous.

Hey Wombat, nice box! I recently bought a 650D case myself. A great case if you want to do a lot of swapping / testing / swapping.
My main E:D machine is going to be in that case. It deserves it. :D

I've had my old Q6600 GTS8800 (320Mb) running the Alpha at lower resolutions, admittedly at 1280x768 it struggled with Factions, at points falling to 11FPS. It would be interesting to know how your machine performs.

Was that at standard speed or overclocked? Mines overclocked by 40% :)

If only you have a better card to try on that CPU.

And was that the original alpha or the second release? It seems the frame rate might have increased with the second version! If it was the original are you able to try it again with the newer version to see what the lowest FPS now is?

Standard clocked and that was on 1.1, on the first release it was struggling at 800x600.

I think there is at least one other Q6600 in Alpha, not sure if it was TJ. It would be nice to hear how much effect a better card would have.

Ok, did some benches and monitoring... And I got was some puzzling results:

Factions, 1440p (2560x1440), full quality (high), FXAA, VSync Off. One run;

Max CPU usage (any core): 85.9%
Max GPU usage: 100%

So, one would think we would be GPU bound... but:
Average CPU load: 69% (core average thread load was between 62.5% and 76%, so it seems to use all cores - even would say HT)
Average GPU load: 43.6%

The GPU load was 21% of the readings at 100% and 36% of the times at zero.

I used 2 different monitoring software: HWinfo64 and MSI Afterburner.

mmmh, I guess I better leave it to ED to deal. Maybe there was something interfering with the SW :p
