Computer feminization

I admit the computer voice does do my head in though.

"Flight Assist off ... Flight Assist on ... Flight Assist off ... Flight Assist on"

Please .. shut up!

the reason a feminine voice is used is because it's calm informative and even mother like in its tones
That's part the problem Mobius - Her (his?) mother used to beat them hence the aversion to the female voice.

I believe you may be onto something there.

Female voices are used everywhere. In airports, train stations, shopping centers etc ... I prefer a female voice in a speaker, that the voice of RAMBO

Plus one for the lowest common denominator if it means a female computer voice. I find the ships voice to be easy to understand and that is it's main purpose. If you wanted a male voice go to LP98-123 in the station you will have a male Russian accented voice. Oh wait that is pandering to the highest common denominator if a female voice is the lowest I guess. Can't just have it one way after all can you.

I never thought I would see a post making the computer voice an issue, let alone actually saying it is pandering to anything. Why not next time instead of making insulting remarks just make a post and suggest, will there be an option for other male or female voices and how about something really helpful as in, will they be available in other languages as well.

At least next time don't try to insult anyone by saying they are playing to the lowest common denominator, that is just wrong on so many levels.

Indeed, actually as much as I would like a voice que for somemissing things ( eg landing gear) the fa on fa off could do with being an option.

An audible but subtle (not irritating ) blip would be better for that as it is something you (I) toggle a lot in battle.

Also, I'd really like the imperial ships to feel different, and that would be one way to go. :)

Now that's a voice of reason. ;)

I have already associated the female voice with the federation, so the damage is done. Expectations are easily born, and hard to kill. Male or female, differentiation is where it is at! So that you get that mystical "feel" for the culture you're involved with. And these station voices are such a potent tool for just that.

You can't please everyone, but you can diversify the pain!

Personally I don't like male voices as ships computers unless its Holly from Red Dwarf or the computer from Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy.

If they are not going to be like that I will keep with the female voice.

Personally, I would love to see a range of male, female, androgynous and robotic voices, and dialogue on the ships, but not be able to change them.

I'd find it fun to dislike the (near) AI on my new Gecko because for some reason it chooses to end every darn sentence with an upward inflection. Still, at least it's better than the Sidewinder with the scratchy voice...

That way if you come across a particular ship you like, you might become really attached to it.

While I agree that would be kinda neat, FD decided to streamline all ship software to one, standard operating system used by all ships in the pilots federation... it's a clever lore reason for them to not have to design different HUDs for every ship, including on board AI voice.

I couldn't careless about male/female voice. I would love to have an option to buy ship AI with witty/sarcastic comments though..something like Jarvis.

Hadn't really thought about it as I generally don't like any form of buying in game stuff. But I could see selling new ship voiceovers for a small fee would be a good way of generating revenue for continued development, and make it worthwhile to produce some variety.

Aye. I want Eddie the shipboard computer. (complete with ticker tape)

'Hi there. This is Eddie, your shipboard computer, and I'm feeling just great, guys. I just thought you might want to know that there are seven WKRX Killemdead Nuclear Missiles locked on to us, and there seems to be something jamming my guidance systems. Impact minus thirty seconds.'

'When you walk through a storm…'

sorry but when you say "pandering to the lowest common denominator " is rather sexist. the reason a feminine voice is used is because it's calm informative and even mother like in its tones, while a masculine voice would have a authoritative tone.
just listen to the space station announcements, a male voice is used to inform pilots not to perform various actions, while in the ship a female voice is used to inform you. its the same for 99% of parenting, on the whole the mothers voice is always the soothing go to person while the fathers voice is always the disciplinarian, "Wait until your father gets home"

Lol! Sure that is how it works sometimes, but the whole world does not operate with social norms and roles from 1950.

I would also be happy to see customisable voices...

Though maybe not down to Yoda... grrr that'd be tiresome quickly.
