Let's see just how many well known automated voices are female in other games / movies / real life compared to male ones.

GlaDOS from portal - female, evil but female...
L-CARS interface from startreks - female
Shodan from system shock 2 - female
Deus ex human revolution machine interfaces had female voices as did mass effects AI and the geth and Halo's Cortana also female.
Andromeda's AI again female (I forget her name)

Numerous other sci-fi movies and TV where the AI was female

And it isn't just sci-fi either,

Company automated call addressing systems use female voices 90% of the time
Apples SIRI has a female voice, it was launched as a Male voice in the UK and people swarmed the Apple tech forums demanding it be switched to female.
Bitchin Betty's in aircraft's and automobiles are named Betty for a reason.
Majority of default GPS navigation prompts are default female, until we change them to sound like MrT or w/e


Male AI voices tend to portray menace
E.G.....HaL 9000 from 2001. (A lot of industry insiders quote this as a main reason alone for using female voices are used in tech)

The chipper "You've got mail!" voice from AOL's dial-up days....OK so not a menace but annoying as hell if only because it reminds us of AOHell.

"It's much easier to find a female voice that everyone likes than a male voice that everyone likes," he says. "It's a well-established phenomenon that the human brain is developed to like female voices."

Its also a well known fact that higher pitched voices are easier to hear over other sounds.....I can vouch for this....there's no way you can't hear my wife nagging me over the tv, no matter how loud I turn it up.

You missed out Holly from Red Dwarf.... male and female used there to great effect :D

Though in retrospect, we could try to get Morgan Freeman do the computer. Or Samuel L. Jackson, but I fear he would be biased against Faulcon De Lacy ships.

The big problem here is that Fillip has previously aired his extremely personal reasons for disliking female voices generally, and specifically in this game. I understand that having a trauma in life can certainly affect your feelings and trigger reactions to certain stimuli - but in this case

1: You have a very specific problem with a very general phenomenon (i.e. Women!)

and

2: You really ought not to have aired that issue so publicly, and so inflammatory. Twice.

As discussed previously, there are options in the future for possible voice switching for e.g. your ship computer - much like a SatNav - and with regards the greater universe's use of particular voices in stations etc.. that could be deemed to be a "Space Canon" thing, or at the very least the "choice" of the fictitious equipment designers.

There are male voices in the game as others have pointed out.

For me the female voice is clearer to hear, more pleasing and preferable to listen to rather than a bloke droaning on. In fact I would say that I listen more attentively to female voices, but that is probably because most of my teachers at school were female!

We've got our TomTom set to a female voice, in fact my wife actually prefers the female voice as well.

The nano suit in the Crysis games comes to mind when having the choice of voices, had that set to female too tbh.

I did try to find some extra voices for my Voiceattack, which I know isn't technically part of the game but it is what talks at me the most, but all I could find were female voices and even then the hack to make them work in Win7 x64 didn't want to work for me.

So I still only have digital doris as my VA voice only for the reason I have no other choice, and the voices in game?... I'll be honest in that until I read this thread I hadn't actually registered their gender, just listened to what I was being told.
