Connecting exploration with real-world space exploration

I was reading this article about the cooperation between certain space-sim and scientific community, listing their latest task: Sifting through images collected by the satellite CoRoT in effort to locate more exoplanets. Here's the article: http://bigthink.com/design-for-good...l-compete-with-algorithms-to-find-a-new-earth

This has such an "ED vibe" to it that I'm wondering why we haven't done it first. And I know that there's an issue with the updates and we don't want to waste devs time, but I think that this wouldn't be so hard to implement. Lets say after you scan a planet, along with the heat map detailing interesting locations you receive an additional image and this is the image from our satellite (we have to find a satellite with a better name). Using in-game tools you classify or sort out the image and deliver it along with your exploration data.

This wouldn't be a massive task where the community is asked to do this as much as they can, but a part of the gameplay that organically attracts players (a bonus feature). Of course, when docked you can work on images that other players have acquired with their scans, so if you really wanna search for that planet you could do it. What do you think?
