Considering getting Elite Dangerous

ED is unique, incredible, difficult, addictive, frustrating, rewarding, buggy, and I wouldn't swap it for the world.

I have accounts on both XB1 and PC, if I could start again it'd be PC all the way.

Xbox pros: I can play it on the big TV in my living room (may not apply to others)

Xbox cons: no voice controls, no voice packs, no alt-tab to third party apps, no customisable HUD, the only flight stick available is a steaming dog egg

PC pros: better graphics & performance available (depending on components obv), better UI experience with mouse & keys, third party apps available inc voice controls and voice packs, huge range of sticks & pedals available, HUD customisable with a few file tweaks, VR! (beware of Odyssey etc)

PC cons: I didn't have one capable of running ED when I bought it on XB1, so I have thousands of hours invested in that account and simply cannot be bothered to grind everything again on PC (may not apply to others)

Have you asked Support to do a transfer? It's a one-off, no going back process and doesn't bring everything across, but may be worth investigating?

I play on a computer with Geforce 710m, Core I3 3217U and 8gb of RAM, I also tried with 4gb of RAM. I get around 40-50 fps in space and 20-25 fps in big stations or planets with some graphic settings at medium or high, so your PC must be realy realy bad to have performance issues.

It is really bad. 😂 But I haven't actually started playing yet, did you read the title, or the rest of the post?

Edit: Or are you saying that hypothetically?

I have been playing elite on and off since the original release in 1984 on all sorts of different formats and although the game has changed an evolved over the years in my opinion it is still one of the best games ever made .
It does haves it's faults but I still believe either on a top of the range pc or console and with a little time and effort you will find it to be a rewarding experience,in a matter of fact I envy you just starting out.
Good luck cmdr.

I've only seen one person claiming keyboard and mouse is easy, everyone else seems to think it's a pain.
Mouse is more precise and easier to fly than joystick.

Joystick is more fun.

Ive used to play on gtx660 + i5 3570, was super fine with single monitor, decent fps and quality. Briefly played on Pentium G3420 without additional GPU! Well, it... worked. I even could recognize surroundings.

My pc is 13 years old (though the graphics card is a geforce GTX 670 so not that old) and it runs the game fine. And I've always used keyboard and mouse. The choice between controls is purely preference, they're all supported well.

So long as your pc meets minimum horizons specs, if you're interested in the genre just go for it.

So, exactly what the title says. I'm thinking about getting this game. As you can see from my profile picture, I've I'm already a player of a Frontier-made game, and don't worry, I know Elite a VERY different genre than Planet Zoo, and management games in general. Still, it's a genre I'm a bit interested in. Just a few questions.

First of all, what platform should I play it with? I have a PC that's pretty bad for gaming. I do have GeoForce Now, meaning graphics aren't going to be too terrible, it's mostly general performance that I'm concerned about. If I need a good computer for playing on PC to be viable, I also could get it on Xbox instead, although I'd rather not if possible, due to personal preference, and the fact that console is always a bit neglected in the world of gaming.

Second, controls. As far as I'm aware, most people either play with a controller or flight stick. I like keyboard and mouse, but should I take the controller route? I've only seen one person claiming keyboard and mouse is easy, everyone else seems to think it's a pain.

Thanks for taking the time to answer these questions, and have a nice day.
I play on PC and that is fine for me. My PC is pretty old but the graphics card is a bit more modern. So you'd probably be fine unless you want to crank up all the settings to max and/or play at crazy resolutions.

I play using a X52 HOTAS setup but still find I need the keyboard and mouse for some things. Perhaps worth sticking to just keyboard and mouse until you feel the game is for you and want to invest more. I also hear that playing on a game controller works pretty well so you could try that and see how it goes.

The game is absolutely playable with KB/M, it's probably the most precise input method. The question is if it's most fun?
In my opinion Gamepad is more fun than KB/M and HOTAS is more fun than Gamepad. If you happen to like the game consider buying a HOTAS later, it really improves the experience.

Because I'm too used to the old Elite/FE2/FFE playstyle, and don't have room on my desk to fit a proper HOTAS or similar, I basically play keyboard-only (mouse for headlook, FSS and station menus, but not for flying the ship - got put off that by 90s space games which implemented mouse control really badly, and even though I know ED does it better than that it just feels wrong to do it)

If I'm up against a really good PvPer then the lack of precise aim and difficulty in controlling more than the most basic assist-off manouevres is noticeable. For the 99.999% of the time that doesn't happen? No problem at all - Frontier have done a really good job of getting the controls to feel natural, I think, and I can certainly hit NPCs with fixed weapons.

Have you asked Support to do a transfer? It's a one-off, no going back process and doesn't bring everything across, but may be worth investigating?
It only brings credit value across - which you can do without Support's help with a friendly fleet carrier nowadays, and keep your initial account and its rep, unlocks, etc. intact afterwards. They really need to give Support some better tools there.

If you're in no hurry only buy it when it's on a sale.
Get the Elite Dangerous: CMDR Deluxe Edition, which includes Horizons (landing on planets) plus a load of paint jobs to get you going:

Nope.

See the link in that post. Get Horizons for a fiver, see the 'related content' link at the bottom of the page to also get the base game (which is nedeed) for a fiver. Then buy whatever paints you might fancy with the £30 you'll have saved by not spending £40 on the Cmdr deluxe edition. Especially relevant since the paints you get with the deluxe edition are for entry level ships if I recall correctly, which you might well find you don't fly after a couple of weeks.

Oh and keyboard and mouse is fine to get a feel for the game and see whether you'd want to invest in a stick, full HOTAS or whatever. I've been playing with KB&M for five years.

I do have GeoForce Now, meaning graphics aren't going to be too terrible, it's mostly general performance that I'm concerned about.
GeForce is a brand and there have been a huge number of GeForce graphics chipset over the years with wildly varying capabilities, so we can't really make any assumptions based on this without knowing the exact model of GPU that you have. As far as CPU performance goes, Elite doesn't depend that heavily on the CPU and gets along fine even on chips that were considered decent 7-8 years ago.

Second, controls. As far as I'm aware, most people either play with a controller or flight stick. I like keyboard and mouse, but should I take the controller route? I've only seen one person claiming keyboard and mouse is easy, everyone else seems to think it's a pain.
HOTAS is more intuitive/immersive and controllers are a nice "lazy" option but mouse/kb is more accurate for combat and really not that difficult to get used to. You can do fine with any of the options.

I'll always recommend the PC version if your system can handle it, if only because it keeps your options open. As for couch potatoes, it's not like your can't plug a PC into your TV.

Just to add to that, for confirmation, my cpu is the Q6600 quad core. That's right, the very first quad core. I bought it when it was really new, back in 2007 or so. I still have the same Republic of Gamers mobo and rubbish 800mhz ram, too. The only things I upgraded were the hard drive to a SSD and the gpu to a 670 GTX.

There are some issues with audio stuttering in really busy combat scenarios and occasionally my frame rate might drop around shard sites but otherwise I get really smooth performance on high settings.

My cpu was considered decent about 12 years ago so you're definitely right. ED cares much more about the gpu but as long as the op has a 470 GTX or better (my previous card), horizons works OK.

Not sure why I think HOTAS is immersion ... did you see last Crew Dragon ? It uses touchpads, like 3-4 of them + remotes.
HOTAS is very old tech, mostly for air plaines.
