Console Update

Greetings Commanders,

Elite Dangerous is a game close to my heart.

It’s no secret that Odyssey’s launch was less than ideal, including the need to split the PC/console player base to focus on a PC-only launch. Since Odyssey’s release in May 2021, we have worked tirelessly to improve the Odyssey experience on PC, and whilst we have made great progress there is still more to be done. We have been supporting the pre-Odyssey and post-Odyssey codebases since.

Over the last several months, we have been wrestling with the best way to move forward, and it is with a heavy heart we have decided to cancel all console development. We need to be able to move forward with the story of the game, and in order for us to do this we need to focus on a single codebase. Elite Dangerous will continue on console as it is now together with critical updates, but we will focus on new content updates on PC on the post-Odyssey codebase.

We appreciate this news is not what our console community were hoping for. This was not an easy decision to make, but it was made with the long-term future of Elite Dangerous in mind.
Where do we stand with console transfers? It's been 4 weeks. Either your team can do it or not. Time to rip the band-aid off.

Yeah, I watched the livestream last week. Fdev just keeps saying they are investigating. That's not an answer though. Feels like we are being kicked to the curb.

Can they at least turn off the up keep cost for the console fleet carriers? now the games dead on console i might take my carrier to the far reaches of the galaxy but don't want to get stuck there with all my ships on board the carrier too when i run out of money

Just in case you didn't watch today's stream, I've transcribed the short segment at the start where console account transfers were discussed by the Lead CM. I have to admit I haven't been able to watch the entire stream as Youtube cut out after a while and I had to find the Twitch channel (wasn't linked in the news post), so I might've missed anything else said on this subject.

We are looking at this, it's a very complex thing that the team are investigating. When we have news on this and I'm hoping it'll be soon now, we'll be able to give it to you, but at the moment there is no more news other than we're investigating it. Once we do have the answer, we'll give them to you in full and make sure you're aware of what we can and can't do, but it is something they're looking at. So as soon as we have that confirmed, it will be communicated from us to you. So apologies, you're still waiting, you're eager, but as soon as we know, we will tell you.

I'm not sure what you are saying? ED shouldn't have had a console release, yet you gamed on console?
NMS HG did manage to get space legs on console in their game, yet Frontier (with all its resources) found it impossible for them to implement on console - if the developers had the will, there would have been a way unless the Cobre engine is totally wayward and obsolete (or crap coding). I would have even accepted a 'lite' space legs, but FD never really explained just what difficulties they were experiencing in bringing it to consoles and didn't actually consider a 'lite' version of odyssey (without all the whizzes & bangs of Space Call of Duty - but just walking on planets and the new SRV/ discovery option) based with Horizon coding?

Yes FD were remiss in its communication blackout over the console Odyssey debacle - I agree.
Doesn't matter what the difficulties were, I don't want to do FPS or any Scanning for PLANTS?!?!?! ---what is that anyway! (more like bird/train/plane-watching, to me), but I would have accepted a 'Lite' version of Odd on PS (reduced graphically, if necessary, down to 1080 or 720).

I DO NOT EVER need to see smoke/fire/clouds/etc. I feel sorry for those who feel they DO need this for immersion.

What I need and signed up for, is a totally superb Space Sim which Elite does Brilliantly (and has done since my speccy Elite in 1985), not Space Call of Duty (I played nearly all of the COD's from PS2 to PS4 BTW).
I also had great (overclocked by myself) PC with massive RAM and GPU in the days when it was affordable.

Funny, because in my experience the most complaints I see about ED are people who dislike the icnreasing "gameifiication" of it. Like the seeming need to turn everything into some kind of minigame regardless of it narratively fitting within the experience, etc. Which rather suggests a more balanced perspective that Frontier are trying to do it all and not succeeding as well as they could at a lot of that, displeasing both kinds of players when any particular thing stands out as detracting from their preferred type of experience.
Well, in 8 years playing Elite I have never seen any comment saying that, I don't say you're wrong, but obviously we don't look at the same content...

I always enjoy a post like this. After explaining that neither expectation is right or wrong, the post finishes by explaining precisely why one of the expectations is wrong :)
I think you should differentiate between "He said it wrong!" and "I did not understand what he said". But if you can't understand such a simple post, then there is not much I can do.

It is possible, believe me. Especially when both hearts beat in your chest.
One does not necessarily exclude the other, whereas I find scenario DLCs as the only alternative rather depressing.
As I said, I don't imply I would not want more content or game mechanics! I think everybody would like more of it. I just say, if you are here for the experience, then you won't hate the game like some do because of its shortcomings, because what you already have is enough to like/love it. But we could love it more!

I will say that it feels really odd any time a bug causes the heat haze from my T9's engines to go away, as it's something my peripheral vision always picks up on which assists in landing my ship.

Really way to treat one third of your customer base! So ticked off I just want to swear and cuss profusely and then rage purchase any other space game while flipping frontier the bird 🤬

Well as this game was the best space game out to find out console is now no longer getting equal treatment. Can i put forward a request that console, both accounts and game in total get transferred to a pc account and removed from console game centres as this is now the killing blow. i have no intention of playing the game on my console any further. i would also wish the year i spent grinding this game along with my account deleting sorry but i no longer feel the urge to play this game any longer as the hope of continued development and the dream of being able to walk through stations and my ship being crushed.

So if any and all future content for console is abandoned, why are the still charging 30$ can. For it on market place ?
Because that is the price of the actual content. When you buy a console game with no online content, you buy the game as it is and it is obviously not free. Elite used to be more expensive than 30$, it is at a dicount already. Now, they should probably lower the price a bit more, given the announcement.

Does a dicount outrank a viscount? :)
