Console Update

Very unfortunate, but I do understand the devs side to an extent. For me is RIP Elite though. Have many more games to enjoy on console than on PC and it is cheaper to invest in a Series X or PS5. There is nothing like Elite on consoles (NMS is not the same experience). I could rely on Xcloud to play Elite, but since it is Series X based that is a lost cause too. Well, it is what it is...

Well, my sympathies go out to our console cohort who were hoping to play Odyssey.

That said, this strikes me as positive news overall.

We should now be able to get a near-term timeline for merging the PC codebases, bringing those player bases back together and hopefully mitigating some of the server-side glitchiness that seems to have sprung from maintaining parallel backends. The promise of "moving forward" with the story is also exciting! There's been abundant hints of planned content that's been stalled, presumably because it depends on code only present in the Odyssey branch.

And for those who've been loudly complaining that the EDH-EDO merge shouldn't happen because they prefer the previous look of planets or other engine-related things, congrats I guess? Those old planets will be sticking around along with the Horizons engine indefinitely in critical-updates-only console land.

Thanks

As a side note, it's a shame that you guys can't give any details on why you have made this decision. But I understand Frontier's reluctance to discuss it.
This was a management announcement, executive style. DB takes responsibility and the first heat.
It seems a bit premature to assume no further details will come and judge them being reluctant.
Now that the road is clear it is well possible that the CMs (maybe with dev support) will add some details later, maybe as part of an upcoming live stream for FC/Update 11.

Well, that's some seriously unfortunate news.

Sincere condolences to the console folks, I know this was the answer everyone was either dreading or cynically expecting. Hopefully some of you will come join us on the PC version if you can, and I very much hope that a transfer option to move accounts from console to PC comes to fruition.

If nothing else, at least now the status of console is no longer an unknown, and people can move forward however they want to.

Does it mean we finely have a merge of Odyssey and Horizon on PC and can meet again my friendd who don't purchasse Odyssey yet ?
Does it mean a split of PC / console for the BGS to ?

Well, for me this finally confirms the Odyssey project as a failure.

Even before we knew for sure what it was about, or even what it was called it was positioned clearly as a paid (i.e optional) expansion or DLC, whichever you want to call it, for the existing Elite Dangerous game.

Once officially announced it boldly displayed PS4 & XB1 logos on its promotional material and PC players were assured it would run fine on their existing rigs … and that’s exactly what you’d expect from an optional DLC. That kind of expansion should have fitted seamlessly into its parent game for those who bought it, but at the same time its existence should have been essentially unnoticeable to those that didn’t. That's clearly not what happened.

If FDev really planned Odyssey as that sort of expansion then something went horribly wrong with its development.
Odyssey was allowed to get out of control. Whether that was failure of communication or management overall, or in individual departments, or a combination of all these and possibly other factors, who knows? Odyssey never managed to become what it was initially promised to be.

At some point in development Odyssey clearly ceased being a manageable expansion and became a power hungry upgrade. Whenever that was, that was the point we should have been given this news.

...and even in that case there's the question of the baffling lack of interest and planning from FD regarding the (at the time) imminent new generation of consoles which other developers seemed to be well aware of.

Massive missed opportunity!

I hope some sort of deal is worked out where console players can move their accounts to PC. Elite thrives on a large player base, and having a single shared platform could work out well in the end provided console players are given the opportunity to migrate.

Despite knocking heads with a couple of them, gutted for console players at this news. I fully expected an announcement at some point saying previous gen were unviable and that the path ahead was going to be the new gen, with a release hopefully slated for the Autumn or Christmas, but didn't expect this.

I think Frontier should do all it can to provide a way for console players to transfer their accounts to PC for those who choose to go that route, as well as offer them a discount on the purchase of the base game.

We are exploring options for transfers but at present have nothing to announce.
I’ll be honest, @Paul_Crowther, I’m not sure I believe this will ever happen. Maybe it’s just the timing of you saying it, but “exploring options” is pretty non-committal right after the abandonment of a feature with more firm promises from the development side. If FDev wants to make things right, commit to it. Maybe you can’t, but @David Braben can.

If FDev truly are committed to full account transfers (permits, explore data, ships, cosmetics, credits), why did you make this announcement now before you had plans in place related to transfers? Will we have to re-buy the game to continue with our accounts?

Thanks,
CMDR Grengarr (Xbox Game Preview Program Player)
