Console Update

Greetings Commanders,

Elite Dangerous is a game close to my heart.

It’s no secret that Odyssey’s launch was less than ideal, including the need to split the PC/console player base to focus on a PC-only launch. Since Odyssey’s release in May 2021, we have worked tirelessly to improve the Odyssey experience on PC, and whilst we have made great progress there is still more to be done. We have been supporting the pre-Odyssey and post-Odyssey codebases since.

Over the last several months, we have been wrestling with the best way to move forward, and it is with a heavy heart we have decided to cancel all console development. We need to be able to move forward with the story of the game, and in order for us to do this we need to focus on a single codebase. Elite Dangerous will continue on console as it is now together with critical updates, but we will focus on new content updates on PC on the post-Odyssey codebase.

We appreciate this news is not what our console community were hoping for. This was not an easy decision to make, but it was made with the long-term future of Elite Dangerous in mind.
Better to focus and be effective than spread oneself too thin and put too many obstacles in the way of development. So good news overall, if a shame to have to cut losses like this.

:D S

They probably didn't make the decision to cancel consoles entirely until a few days ago, which game them enough time to discuss account transfers but not enough time to figure out if the logistics and finances would be feasible. They probably knew that console development being canceled was a possibility for eight months, but still tried to make it feasible, hence why they didn't explore account transfers until the final decision was made.

I think you're giving them credit where none is due.

They've known for 9+ months that it wouldn't be released on consoles. Hell, all the players knew. Fdev are just catching up.

Hope they get sold or go bust soon. I'm ashamed I ever gave them my money, never mind as much as I did.

My 5 cents on the subject: Elite has always been Frontier's flagship.
If David Braben didn't love it anymore, it would be gone.
Economically, it's a money sink. So why invest money?
We have to take what we can or go home.

The Odyssey has to be the WORST Game (DLC) Update's in the history of Gaming !

After it's release the Steam reviews were on Fire with bad reviews
It killed one of the best VR games
It killed the Consoles
It cut Frontier's company value by half

It also decimated 6 years of exploration discoveries on the Galactic Mapping Project, without warning.

At least there's a chance they'll still be relevant now, if Horizons is getting a stay of execution.

But think- all those new PC commanders rushing to buy ED on Steam- those numbers are going to skyrocket so far out you'll need James Webb to see them.

Now that the impossible has been proven to be impossible, does that mean the last standing format is going to be super pumped with new vigour? Or will ED limp on and have the minimum invested into it before it visits the knackers yard?

Where's your proof that they knew this wasn't going to work on consoles? Not speculation, but hard irrefutable proof?

We are investigating potential options but we don't have anything to announce at present.
It's quite a bad sign that they made the decision to drop the console's next DLC without considering a solution like updating the console to PC so it can includes their ranks, engineered ships etc instead of the assets value or cross save especially when other games supports the cross save. I feel sorry for the poor community managers since they are gonna ask the devs about this and probably preparing for a further huge backlash from the console players that they need to start again from scratch if the answer is no

They had like 2-4 years of development on this Odyssey dlc and they failed the important requirement, "Can it be run on the players' low to high range PC and consoles without an issue?". The answer is no cos they are still trying to get it work almost a year later.

At the release? Yes... Now? AWESOME.
And will get better and better.

I still find it amusing that some people think odyssey caught fdev unaware. It was being developed for well over a year prior to it's release. They were well aware of the state it was in. They were well aware of the amount of money they'd need to invest in skilled labor and time to fix things for consoles 9 months ago. We're hearing about things now because of business decisions made then, not surprising developments or recent unforeseen changes.

it was in their best interest to delay releasing this news because it would negatively affect sales of horizons on consoles....whatever few sales they may have been.

I dont think anyone is really surprised by this news except that Braben was the one to give it. I kinda thought he had checked out of caring about elite 9 months ago.

So you kept us all waiting and hoping for 9 months to just pretty much say "cya later consoles"? You played on our hope and arx just to drop this like nothing?

Let me just stop myself now. It was a good 5 years on this game but I guess the road comes to an end now.

o7 Commanders and thanks FDev for leading us on for the past 9 months without any interaction or explanation.
