Console Update

Awful news, I wouldn't hold your breath for any transfer options. That's something we've been asking for since 2015, if it were worth putting the effort into it they would've done it long ago. To me, all of this just reinforces how they probably approach developing things. You would think taking a game save from one platform to another would be fairly simple...but their "solution" for this is to have someone go in and manually add up how much all of your assets are worth, and create a new account with that amount as your dollar balance. How is some support person doing all of this manual work over years and years, a better investment than just creating a system that works on both platforms? But it's clear that's been the problem with this game since day 1, there's no forward-thinking and nothing is built for expansion/compatibility, they get things done in the quickest way possible to ship it out and say they've done it, and then worry about the technical debt that has been accrued later down the road.

As someone who has put 2000+ hours into the game, it's just really sad that it's come to this. Have soured quite a bit on Frontier over the last couple of years because of how they've handled this game (and others in their catalog), and this just seals it for me. Even if they do miraculously come out with an account transfer option, I don't think I could bring myself to play anymore knowing their track record. Just feels like they had so much momentum and potential with this game at launch that was completely squandered in favor of making other lackluster games. Just don't understand how you can sit there and watch people dump hundreds of millions of dollars into a competing game and think "maybe we should reallocate most of our development resources to these other games instead". Surely there was a way to better monetize Elite and make it worth developing across all platforms?

Sure just give us full account transfers.

Seriously though, so far most of your replies have been dismissive and unhelpful. Not to mention continuously and demonstrably wrong about whether it was announced for console.

Why are you even participating in the conversation?

Pretty clear to me that console development is dead for Elite Dangerous.

note: I'm not trying to be an ass, sucks it won't move forward for consoles.

There's been a lot said on this thread already but might as well add a few of my thoughts.

I'm on PS4 (albeit Pro) so realistically I didn't expect see Odyssey reach my current console - was thinking along the lines of it being good motivation to get a PS5 sometime soonish though...

It's the "cancel all console development" bit which is tough to take. So, *nothing new to look forward to whatsoever?!

I've just recently gone through the 3000 game hours mark, have over 11 bil in the bank, own a carrier and a sizeable fleet of highly engineered ships - where do I go? No Scorpion SRV, no possibility of new ships, no new weapons / modules? What motivation do I have to play on?

And, realistically how long will the PS4 / Xbox servers stay online?

Odyssey was clearly advertised as being released on consoles originally - in Dec 20. (Incidentally I've never accepted the excuse for the delay to spring 21 due to Covid - I work in software development and the shift to fully remote working two years has not affected our productivity or ability to deliver at all.) Then, after the delayed PC release, we got ten months of "no updates to share", then today "sorry guys, consoles are game over". A totally disgraceful way to treat your customers.

I choose to play games on console - I don't want to play on a PC - I work in front of a computer all day, I want to sit on my couch to play games, not at a desk. And, even if I did decide to jump over, I simply don't have the spare cash required to buy a PC specced well enough to run Odyssey!

I have a squadron and we recently had a new member join and we are currently helping him get Guardian tech, open Engineers etc so I guess if he wants to continue I'll do that. I also have always wanted a second trip to Colonia. Other than that I can see my Elite career packing up fairly soon which is deeply sad.

Point is, people who are disappointed or frustrated by this news have a right to be, as long as they're reasonable about it.
Yep. Unfortunately as expected, Sally is already on the receiving end of stuff on Twitter, which is ridiculous given she's let everyone knowing she's currently not working and dealing with health issues. The other CMs have sort of intimated that they've been on the receiving end as well.

Others have compared what Frontier has done to the rise of the party in Germany.

I've seen threats and anger on Reddit. Plenty more on here, but it got moderated fairly quickly.

(Although as someone angrily pointed out of a few pages ago, its the PC Elite community that's the most toxic.)

Just curious as to why you think it should only be a PC game?
for the best 3rd party tools like inara, edmc, eddiscovery and their API helping to feel cmdrs really connected inside a living galaxy also if you play alone,
the great way to customize the setup with hotas, switch, multimonitor.
the great bad thing about console was the absence of cross play with pc

Yes that's what those little squiggly lines called letters, put together into words, says. /s

What you replied to is about transferring to the one remaining place the game is still supported into the future. That was "pretty clear to me".

First of all my sincere condolences to the console commanders!

A few thoughts arise.
Over the last several months, we have been wrestling with the best way to move forward, and it is with a heavy heart we have decided to cancel all console development. We need to be able to move forward with the story of the game, and in order for us to do this we need to focus on a single codebase.

I take this to mean that they sincerely wanted to port it, but they can't at the moment and they need to continue with the storyline and not stay in a holding pattern.

This leads me to two thoughts..

First of all how far have they've come in improving the framerates and lighting..? Maybe U11 will be somewhat of a disappointment for us PC users when it drops..

Second, if that's true, then maybe at a future date (when PC is properly optimized), they will indeed port it to consoles, it's just a commitment they won't make right now. Like this it's a cleaner cut, and leaves no need for wondering when the console port is dropping.

My personal opinion is that they should already have had a plan in place for porting console accounts to PC, including all achievements and bling acquired. A free PC version and a discount for EDO would probably have been welcomed too..

ED2 confirmed! All platforms, high-def VR, and BGS updates!
You also forgot crossplay and ship interiors as well as meaningful gameplay, no more relog required.

As for topic:
I'm OK with it. I feel sorry for the console folks to be strung along for 10 months to hear this news. But I think if Fdev can find a way to port accounts from console to PC, so those who want to migrate can do so, I think it would make this message a bit less bitter to swallow.

I'm not surprised and is likely better for the game going forward.
I wouldn't hold your breath..odyssey was developed on pc very poorly optimised for a game of its type and porting to console hadn't even got underway. The poor quality of odyssey had nothing to do with consoles but appeasing the shareholders by releasing a sub par product far too early.

Why would you want to transfer your account when you can just buy the PC version and not do anything stupid.

I am participating in this conversation in order to express my full support and approval of the actions of fdev, as well as to explain to this crowd of whiners that happened only for the better!
Why would I want to have my thousand of hours of progress/my save moved to the PC? Is that a serious question?

I am happy to pay for it. Im not sure what you are failing to understand.

Probably when FDev are in need of a cash injection to boost share prices!
I remember someone pointing out the capabilities of the consoles both the previous gen and current gen, comparing TFLOPS of each to Odyssey and Horizons, and the conclusion was, for the One, One X, PS4 (that era), there was no way in hell to get Odyssey to run on them

then they looked at Series S/X, PS5, etc, and they said MIGHT, but even they doubted it.So honestly, unless they figure out how to optimize the code base between now and when ever this hypothetical announcement would happen, I doubt they would be willing to say ALL console development. They would have just said "We are stopping support for blank generation consoles and focusing on current gen." something like that.

So yeah, console ED is dead and it's not coming back. Jesus Christ I feel sick to my stomach.

Hey, just wanted to point out that save migration has been achieved in the past. Unintentionally, of course, but achieved nonetheless. So it is definitely possible. As you will see in the pics, this was confirmed by paige, a former CM, so it's authentic. Please let the devs know we need them to make full account transfers a reality. Not just assets. And shown them these pics. It's only fair after odyssey on console has been abandoned. View attachment 295413View attachment 295414View attachment 295415
If it's not a technical issue, then it could be contractual in regards to Sony & Microsoft as mentioned a couple of times already.

Seriously is this guy some kind of Fdev troll? WHAT KIND OF QUESTION IS THIS?!

"WhY dO yoU wAnT YoUr ProGrEsS aNd HaRd WoRk TrAnSfErRed" might be the dumbest thing I have read all day.

"we launching for pc and consoles"
Then
"We have to postpone console launch indefinitely"
10 months later
"sorry, consoles are cancelled"

this right here folks is how you should NOT treat customers, if any of you ever own a company.

on the not-so-bright side, i hope i'll be able to play in acceptable FPS on my horizons-capable machine now, since it was promised and almost a year later i still can't do that above 20 FPS.

RIP Console players, seems like for Frontier you were just a number on a spreadsheet, i'm sorry.
